Old model, but going by the reviews of the new one, it's a good thing.

way better value. That's the new model, that I wouldn't touch…ever.
@Pizza The Hut: These also have standard USB cord. New model does not, loose that cord and ur screwed.
@PainToad: don't lose it then
@PainToad: Nothing worse than a loose cord!
@PainToad: The new one also has a 'standard' cord it just follows a newer standard and you should start seeing more devices using the Micro heads (as someone mentioned below HTC phones also are using them).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Connector_…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Mini_and_M…@PainToad: there is nothing wrong with the new cord. They actually click in and are more secure then the other mini usb connections. Also there are a number of manufacturers that as moving over to this connection (eg. Blackberry, WD, Nokia, HTC (always had them), etc..)..
@BlitzR: And the neg is for?
@Pizza The Hut: WD are in the process of updating the firmware/software to allow the removal of the VCD. You can disable it on the latest firmware (except for WD My Studio Drive).
I'm gonna go buy the new model and lose the cord on purpose. Suckers!
That'll teach ya.Also this one for $99: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4be89e1001f4912…
anybody have a review or more info about what to look out for in the new model?
I have got the new model 750GB from HN last week. I am using everyday and dont seem to find any problem. Except the annoying application error everytime I plugged that in. Like Naed said this can be disabled anyway. Apart from this I dont have any issue with it.
And for the USB cable. I believe it is a standard USB cable to be used for most 2.5 portable drive, USB A <-> mini usb. I used the same cable for my HTC phone and did not find any issue. What's wrong with the cable?
For this deal, I would say the 750GB is more worthy for the money, as it is only $10 more.
Agree. I've had this drive for 2 weeks now. With the original firmware & new firmware, I've had no issues at all. Great drive and its a little smaller & compact. Only thing I hate about it, is it has a stupid gloss finish that can easily get scratched ( I have mine in a sleeve).
I would say that this pricepoint is obsolescent:
- WD 750Gb for $129 (OW)
- Samsung 640gb for $99 (MWave)
- Samsung 500gb for $85 (IT Estate).
And WD's counterproductive software can easily be reformatted into oblivion (except for the newer non-portable, internal drives, ***EAR, with a secret partition.)
I would rather get the Elite version of this for $139 at JB Hifi (or less after haggle or -5% at OW). Elite is better as it has matte finish, indicator lights on the side and includes a dock! Or rather the 750GB for $129 from OW. I prefer microUSB as it uses the same cable as my HTC and Blackberry devices and I am sure most newer devices will use this standard so better to all have the same cable.
Normal 2.5" 500GB portable drives like this have been floating around $99-119 of late so I wouldn't call this a bargain. Sorry but it really isn't!
wish there's a bargain on the hdd itself as I have to change my lappy's one ><
This ain't no stinking bargin, partner. And you ain't my partner.
not a bargain…as per above
Even got my Samsung S2 640G for only $125 almost a year ago, absolutely NO bargain on this WD …
