MEL / SYD / BNE to Noumea $448 Return Economy / $998 Return Business Class - Qantas

580

Qantas currently have Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to Noumea return for $448 economy / $998 business class as part of their "Fly Away Sale". Flight availability is from mid July all the way through to next May. Melbourne departures transit through Sydney, with both Qantas and AirCalin making the flight to Noumea.

IMO, the business return fare ex Melbourne is the real kicker, and there is good availability for peak times like Easter 2017. Ironically, it's more expensive to fly one way in business class from MEL to SYD than flying one way MEL-SYD-NOU!

Flying MEL-SYD-NOU return in business will net you 200 status credits, which is a significant haul for the cost outlay (and one of the best I've seen for a long while) - just be sure to make sure your flights all hold a QF number in order to ensure they are eligible for SC (and points) earn.

Note that these fares are available through the AMEX travel portal - https://travel.americanexpress.com.au/travel/arc.cfm - and booking the economy return fare would be a great way to use the $300 travel bonus that comes with the AMEX Platinum Charge card (per deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236605). Please consider using my referral link at the bottom of the AMEX referral wiki under 'Platinum Charge Card' (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals) if you're interested in signing up.

Alternatively, if you were quick enough to take advantage of the AMEX $50 cashback on $350 Qantas spend deal (per: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251632) you could consider paying via Qantas online with your AMEX card (noting that a decent chunk of the cashback will be eaten up with credit card fees).

Whatever you choose to do, move quickly, as this sale ends 24th June.

    Great write up.
The first thing I thought of when I saw that business class pricing was status credits (aka "Mileage Run Deal")

Forgot about the AMEX credit, and the Platinum Charge $300 travel bonus too, but that's an awesome reminder.

    • It's a great way to net 200 SCs (which is 1/3 of the way to re-qualifying for QF Gold) for under a grand!

      • So if you had the time to fly this route 3x.. $3k to re-qualify for QF Gold. Yea sounds decent (but if you are gonna be flying anyway wouldn't be worth doing it unless you were just short).
What is it again? 650 to re-qualify and 700 to qualify first time?

        • +1

          600 / 700

        • Couldn't you just pay $510 to renew gold class? I might be thinking of Hoyts.

      • My dummy booking SYD - NOU nets 120 status credits return as a Business Sale fare.

        • +1

yep - you'll need to depart from MEL to get 200 (add 40 SCs each way for MEL-SYD business).

          @adelee:
i almost feel that QF gold isn't a deal
just got the gold q tags in the mail the the letter with the benefits seems abit average, what's the big fuss in it?
i see that you get complimentary qantas club for the year
anything else that you use out of that?
but yes 200 sc points for that price is good if we look at it at a price point per SC. i booked NY return on business for 7k and I only got 500ish sc points from that
i was checking out things to do in noumea, doesn't seem to be much. even the beach looks average with exception of ile de pins

        • @deviant: QF Gold is more than just access to Qantas Club lounges - it gives you Oneworld Sapphire status which in turn gives you access to hundreds of business partner lounges worldwide (Qantas Club members can only access QF operated lounges). That, plus Gold priority boarding, seat selection, extra luggage allowance and better award seat availability makes it good value if you're travelling frequently.

  • Any cruises back? ;)

    • Good question! As these fares can actually be booked one way at full sale ($224 economy / $496 business), I did consider that. Couldn't find anything on cruisedirect.com.au, but will do some further research.

Do I need to speak French in order to survive there? I only know 'bonjour'..
    Serious question.

How's Nouméa compared to Bali, Fiji or say Hawaii?
    It's a tempting deal!

"Bonjour" will get you into a lot of places…

      • So will "vou le vou coucher avec moi"

If you can stand cruise ships they have much more competitive deals that will visit the places in New Caledonia tourists mostly want to visit (Mare, Isle of Pines etc). Taking those small planes for half an hour return could set you back almost as much as this return flight alone if not booked well in advance (over $240 for Isle of Pines and over $320 for Mare) but at least you can take your time and avoid sea sickness.

Add up accommodation, typical South Pacific rip-off grocery prices and tours/transport and it quickly adds up well beyond a Quad share on P&O. But if you've never been to Paris I suppose Noumea is the closest thing…

    • No.
You can get by in any country without speaking the language as long as you are willing to work a bit harder to be understood. Just learn "Hello" and "Thank You" and you are set. A big goofy grin is also a great asset, people assume you are a friendly idiot and will try their best to help you out :)
And to give you a head start Thanks is Merci :)

Mmm perfect for my status run. Anyone want to split costs on hotels? :D

  • Great deal, always wanted to visit Ile de Pins so this might be my chance!

    never hear Noumea before

  • +4

Noumea is probably one of the worst holiday spots, literally everywhere is better in that region.

    • +1

Yes and no…. there are some great spots in the South Pacific, but agreed, Noumea isn't one of them.

It's a boring little city, with very little to offer beyond a couple of days. And it's VERY Very expensive, remember New Caledonia is a French Territory.

To offer an easy point of comparrison, a medium Big Mac Value Meal is AUD$14 !

      • Wtf…. that's bloody ridiculous…

  • C'est ca qu'est bon!

I used to work in New Caledonia, now I only dream of it.

  • Just curious with the Amex Wiki how come when I put my referral in it, it gives me a really long link instead of the short one that I had.

    • Thanks, deal updated.

      • No pos for his comment? :P

        • Some people might consider than my thank you above acknowledges it, but happy to oblige :)
