Wow, 60fps at 720p in that thing, +1 respect to JVC. This would just be a toy to muck around with for me… but if I wanted a camera I'd like this.

  • Holy moly! At that price, it's nearly cheap enough to muck around with like a toy!

  • Thinking about getting this for my mum (she's going on holiday soon). What's the maximum length recording go for?

Say if I got a 16gig card and recorded on the lowest possible quality settings?

    • Should be 40+ hours at QVGA if their figures are right.. But that's a terrible resolution.

I imagine it'd be just under 3 hours at 720p/1080p.

      • Oh that'd be great! I thought 16000mbs / 12mbps / 60secs = 22 minutes though?

        • its 16000MB which is 128,000mb /12mbps / 60 = 178mins recording, so ~3 hours

          • @hellbound: Ah I see, thanks so much! I think I might actually get this!

            • @lyl-Lychee: Yeah, and grab 2 or 3 16GB card from MSY. they are not that expensive

  • +1

    Since when is 1440 x 1080p 16:9?

    • -1

      You're right, should read 4:3

      • +2

Recording aspect ratio and display aspect ratio aren't necessarily 1:1. (Standard Definition) DVDs are displayed in 16:9 but are recorded using 4:3 PAL resolution. Look up "Ananamorphic recording".

      • There's no such thing as HD in 4:3. 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 is always at 16:9. The human eye cannot detect the horizontal res. As long as 1080 is the vertical resolution you will not distinguish with 1920x1080. 1080 in progressive is most important. 1920x1080 camcorders all record in interlace mode (expect for JVC's higher models which can output 1080p)

  • how does this compare to the sony bloggie?

  • +3

Okay, I just got back home and did some more research. Found a few more resources on the net about this device.

No mention regarding whether it's TRUE 16:9 @ 1080p or not, but judging from the specs, it's not. As AlexF stated, it's likely to be anamorphic (the press release specs says it's "16:9 wide mode"). Of course, at 720p it's definitely 16:9.

Lastly, after checking a few more price comparison sites, I found the cheapest price online to be $175 here:
    http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-jvc-picsio-gc-fm1-price-218444.…
Not sure about availability, and obviously shipping needs to be added to that price. Looks like this offer from COTD is still the cheapest for now.

All comes down to whether you need something small and portable, and has reasonable quality but a minimal feature set at a discounted price. I'm still tempted….

  • Looks pretty cool. Not gonna get it but this would be fun if I had spare cash lying around haha

      Thank you but no Thanks!
I don't get it. Say thanks but no vote?!? ;-)

  • God this looks good….only con i would say is the reviews say it has bad sound quality…but how bad is bad? Im definatley a camer anoob so im sure it would be fine for me…and no flash. That kinda sucks, but im sure i will be able to make do!

    • All mags I've read always rate Picsio as the best over FLIP, SONY, and KODAK. I reckon it's a good deal

  • I was interested in this camera a while back so I did some researches on it.

The specs looked good on paper but reviewers have tested it out.
the video was dark and grainny on all resolutions.
the still photos are not bad.

this is a case where more megapixel did not help. HD mode did not resulted in better graphics either.

    Kudo to JVC for trying.
if they can improve on the hardware and their technology, I will buy the future version.

For those of us trying to do more research now, I think it would be worthwhile if you qualified your comments with some links to those reviews.

Whether the device is good enough or not might depend on the usage and conditions that it was tested under, and whether or not it matters to those who are considering buying.

It really depends on what the camera is going to be used for, and the type of person who is going to be using it.

Just my 2 cents anyway :)

    pity it's a mono microphone

  • I think the sony Bloggie is a better pocket camcorder.
    http://www.cnet.com.au/best-pocket-camcorders-339301714.htm

The cheapest price you can get is $199 for the Sony Bloggie at sony.com.au . You need mysony ID to qualify for the price tho.

  • Got mine today, updated firmware for better audio and it rocks! Woo Hoo 1080p !

    • Got a link for the updated firmware? I can Google it of course, but if you have successfully done it then it makes sense to use the same source for firmware and steps as you did. Thx!

  • Just picked up one for $128.98 with shipping from 1-day.com.au — but the site was extremely busy and hard to get to the page to buy it.
