Good for wii u bonus storage?
Does this join my existing WLAN, and serve DLNA, SMB, NFS, HTTP - or must I use their horrid 'app'?
I had a WD pocket HD, but you had to use it as a hotspot, which was of limited use.
DLNA is the standard way to stream videos etc over your home network, e.g. from your desktop torrents folder to your blu-ray player or other set-top box. SMB and NFS are general purpose filesharing methods on a LAN. I hope you know HTTP :-)
"Seagate Wireless broadcasts its own Wi-Fi network, so you can wirelessly stream your media and files to up to three mobile devices"
This seems the same from the description.
Can anyone comment if these are any good. Looking to stream video to an iPad
Use one in the car every time we go away so my daughter can watch movies. Works great for streaming to iPad… BUT, the app you use to do it, well, it is kinda crap. :)
Edit: inb4 all the tools turn up saying "doesn't do 10bit 3D 4K 60fps, so no deal" I have tried it with 720p videos and it works great for them. I have not tried 1080p, nor have I tried 4K 10bit H360 no scope 3D VR quality, so YMMV…
My kids watch virtual reality in the car. I tell them to look out the window.
Do they complain about the motion blur?
We travel mainly on the south eastern arterial in Melbourne so not an issue.
The mechanical hard drive will not last with the vibration/bumpiness in the car.
Beg to differ. Most hard drives like this are built to withstand being in laptops. And I don't know where you drive your car, but most of the time I use mine on long freeway drives, smooth running. Most modern cars have pretty good tyres and suspension, so unless you're running off road, I think that "vibration/bumpiness" effect are negligible…
And at $66 for a wifi 500gb hard drive, it's pretty cheap to chuck it in the car and let it vibrate itself to death…
Can you charge this in the car while on the go for really long trips?
Yes. I just plug mine in and leave it connected. It says "up to 8hrs" on the box on battery and at full video playback, for me, it is closer to 3 to 4 hours from my experience.
@pegaxs: Thanks. So it will hold charge then once plugged in to the Cig lighter and not run out of juice.
@MaMan: I don't know that much other than what I have tested. I can't say if it runs off external power or a mix of both. I use it as a back up drive on my PC and it's plugged into a USB 3 port and it has not run out of power running like that for day and weeks on end. But! The caveat to that is on my PC it's just a backup drive and not streaming HD video over a wifi connection. If you're asking will it last from here to LAX on a Non-stop 17hr flight streaming video the whole way, I just don't know, sorry.
@pegaxs: thanks. Went to local office works and found out the green one only is on clearance and scanned up at $45. Will upload receipt when I get home later. Wrapped with the price though.
