Laptop under $1500

Just wondering is it worth the extra money for a macbook pro or should I just buy a lenovo or dell xps? Just using it for university work, teaching and light gaming (dota 2 & overwatch).

What cpu is the macbook running? So i can compare it to the recent deal of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250428

Thanks

Are there invisible comments bashing the macbook? I don't see any.

If have nothing contribute, you should probably move along.

  • The macbook pro is getting a Skylake refresh.

No word as of pricing or availability.

The best option for as little money spent as possible is to just buy a Dell Latitude refurb. The Doutlet will be empty on weekends but after the holidays it should re-populate.

Go for something like a Dell Latitude 13 7000 series
(suggested spec: FHD display and SSD at the minimum)

If you can't afford the 7000 series, the Latitude 5000 series are slightly bulkier options, but cheaper.

For gaming, you'd probably have to look at getting a Lenovo Edge E460 specced with a discrete GPU.

  • I think the new macbook will be announced in a few days time and should be in store early next month.

You'll need a dedicated GPU to run overwatch. Playing overwatch with integrated graphics produces a lot of heat even on low settings.

Perhaps you should go for a metabox laptop.

    • but 2 views seen there :( one said the yoga is better than e460 without reasoning. and other said e460 better cpu. Just needed more thoughts cause money aint easy for a uni student :(

Those are two different devices for different users.

I had an E series before. The build quality is mostly plastic. There was a bit of flex when force is applied.

Its a low-end entry level business device (but actually, nowadays I consider it 'prosumer' level' because most businesses nowadays get a Thinkpad T, or X, or Latitude). they are not ruggedized either, but you can outfit it with a Core i7, i5, i3 and the GPU is optional. Screen resolution can b 720p or 1080p.
So they can cost anywhere between $600 for crapspecs to $1200 for awesome specs.

The Thinkpad Yoga is a high-cost premium device with reinforced chassis, carbon fiber lid and with a thin, lightweight profile. The Yoga 460 is a bit fatter though, so it's not thin enough to be considered ultrabook, but it is a convertible. You can't choose a GPU.

The Yoga is 👍 for work
but poor for gaming since doesn't have enough guts for a discrete graphics card.

You might want a Dell XPS or custom-config Edge 460 for that.

  • Just FYI, Overwatch isn't on Mac yet
