I reckon it's the most grandparent-friendly netflix machine. Gotta get them into the digital age somehow…

      • -5

I got my Chromecast Gen 1 last year for $38 and I reckon it's better.

Having used both, I don't think it's that much harder to use than Apple TV for your grandparents IF they have a PC/laptop/compatible mobile/tablet.

        I could be wrong.

        • +3

IF they have a PC/laptop/compatible mobile/tablet, chances are they wouldn't need help to get Netflix on the tv lol

      • +2

        I hope it shows Matlock

        • +1

          And murder she wrote

  • -1

    Can this playback 2160p h.265?

    • Not supported by hardware. All HEVC, actually. Which kinda sucks.

      • Ah that sucks was going to buy but now wont

      • To be honest I could have guessed the answer, but since I'm not an Apple fan I like to point out deficiencies like this ;-) Not that I see it having a huge effect on sales, its still a very pretty box with a large Apple logo…

    • -1

      Care to explain how?

      • -7

Price. If it's for just streaming movies via phone. Too many different remotes already.

    • +10

I have both and the Apple TV is much better for ease of use. You don't need a laptop or phone to use it!

    • +12

What a ridiculous comparison. They're completely different devices.

    • +1

Chromecast is a totally different concept

  • +5

Ha, you're joking right? Not even in the same class. Chromecast is a streaming stick and that's it.

    • +2

      Plebs ahoy matey!

    • +3

Registered just to say what a prat you are.
You can have an Apple Tv and not buy anything else from apple. I've got one, and have Plex, and all of the local TV streaming services installed. Works like a charm.
The ability to say "go back 30 seconds", or "what did he say?" (and have subtitles appear) is really so good.

      • -1

You could install plex and kodi on a sub $40 android box. Buy wax rain and you have airplay that's better than apple's implementation because of the no disruption mode(doesn't support DRM though)

      • Again, nuc and pc stick do more than just Plex.

  • +1

Silly to say that Chromecast is even close to this.

  • +2

I am wondering what are the advantages of appletv over chromecast ?

    • Games, apps. Airplay. Stand alone remote

    • +1

They are different devices, best to have one of each, and a player that gives Kodi, such as the Raspberry pi 3.

    • +1

I think the chromecast, apart from being a straight forward streamer only, is also hard coded DNS to google server, which makes it very difficult to, for example, explore all your Netflix options. The Apple TV is a much more flexible device.
That said, Sub $200 is the price the Apple TV is probably worth IMHO. $269 RRP is getting into Xbox territory.

      • Null routing Google DNS with easy how-to guides for your router is hard?

  • +6

Apple TV 4 + Plex/Infuse is amazing. Highly recommend this setup.

    • Used to use plex. Crashed a LOT and had trouble with codecs. Much easier to use a PC

    • -1

I'm guessing you must have the NBN? Otherwise how do you download 10gb+ non-HEVC 4K videos?

    • same here, upgraded from ATV3 to this one and plex works so well, even the wife stopped complaining.

We're hooked on GOT, we used to watch it with the sound down and subtitles as the kids were asleep. Recently picked up a MPOW bluetooth receiver from OZB, hooked it up to two headphones and ATV4, works great!

  • +8

Seriously stop crapping on about Apple vs Google, just be happy that we have a choice. After all you aren't forced to buy one or the other.
    They both offer great options.

Got this in the last eBay sale through Kogan (for about this price), from memory took a while to ship but arrived in a sealed package and works well.

I'd recommend people buy an Australian Power cable with insulated pins (like this one http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/jackson-fem…) for a few dollars instead of using an adapter, just a little safer.

Anyway its a good device, much better than the ATV 3 and Plex is brilliant.

    • How did I know that comment would get negged by dumb as f**k apple or google fanboys.

    • Serious question though - how is it much better than the ATV3?

I know you can run apps and games on it - but specifically maybe what kind of apps/games and/or what else does it have over the ATV3.

      • +2

ATV4 over ATV3 for a number of reasons but primarily because you can run apps from multiple regions side by sîde. I have Hulu and HBO installed along side STAN and SBS along with BBC, Zattoo among others. Also some providers are not providing an app for the ATV3 but are for the 4

        • Cheers for the tips guys!

      • +2

also ABC iView has an app that works natively on ATV4 with captions. its a good upgrade IMHO

  • How does it compare to the Roku (3 or 4)? Can you do Netflix US? Is it the same as the older version - that you make changes in the router/modem and something like Getflix to get it?

    • Hard coded DNS ruins Roku for me

Apart from that, they are a good solution

  • +4

Apple TV is good - Amazon Fire TV is better

AFTV is the best small box streaming solution available in June 2016 IMO

The best overall, single box streaming/media solution is a HTPC - always has been

  • -4

Apple fans are out in full force!

  • +8

Just want to note, I'm not an Apple Fanboy, and I don't want to even have an Apple ID. I use a PC to stream everything, but my grandparents are not tech savvy at all, but want to get on netflix. Chromecast is not an option - it's just too fiddly for them! Plus, Apple TV supports the channel 9, 7, 10, ABC and SBS Apps, which they will love. Okay, that's all I got to say. Hate on, party people. xo

  • +4

Anyone buying this should buy InFuse ($15, pricey, but worth it). You can link to an SMB share via a home server, networked PC, NAS or simply a hard drive connected to your router. From there InFuse will pull metadata for the media (video only, no music, sadly). It's absolutely awesome if you have a decently organised media drive. You can setup multiple PVR services to an RPi and have them download straight to your HDD moments after they're up, it's truly impeccable. IMHO, InFuse absolutely blows Kodi out the water, the interface is nice, fast, the metadata handling is great and it feels like a system app, whereas Kodi does not, regardless of what themes. Oh and InFuse supports Dolby sound, which is partially why it's expensive – got to pay those royalties.

    • +1

The best part is that it can just about handle any video format you throw at it!

      • Still no HEVC is a deal breaker for me.

        • If I told my grandparents the Apple TV is no good because it doesn't have HEVC they would wonder when I learnt to speak Swahili.

In fact, the chat wouldn't even have to be with my grandparents. I have just enough awareness to imagine that hot girl sitting right next to me right now on the bus would think I'm weird if I even brought it up. If I dared.

It is annoyng it doesn't do HECV and stream 4K, but I am sure the next iteration will. In the meantime, it's a pretty good, if pricey streamer that does a lot of things a chromecast doesn't.

    • +2

Yeah, OP's grandparents should just do that. And my parents. And my sister. They should totally follow those simple steps you have just outlined.

Yes it's an option, and probably a superior option but it's complicated and requires specialist knowledge. Most people don't care. They want Netflix and TV.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that different people have different needs and 95% of the general population don't have the time and inclination to do stuff like this?

      • I wasn't specifically targeting anyone. However, setting up InFuse with SMB consists of a few basic steps: buy infuse and install it, connect a portable drive to your router and add a password, if you want, in infuse, open settings, add location, it'll find the drive and then you login or not and its done.

The PVR stuff is a bit more complex but can be done in probably two hours if you don't get distracted and follow a guide properly. The guide is mostly copy and paste, so it's hard to screw up. The benefits are great, not having to touch the properly configured setup as it gets you everything you want until the server breaks or a service shuts down is excellent. Heck, it saved me from copying crap to my NAS manually multiple times a week.

        • No, I know, but what seems easy to someone like you or me is literally meaningless to most people.

          I will leave this here:

My sister refers to her desktop as "The Mainframe".

I am only 30% convinced she is joking.

  • Any difference between this HK version of the Apple TV vs the Australian version? Apart from the power cable.

    • +1

      No

    • +3

Warranty! Kogan's is hong Kong stock so apart from power cable the bigger problem is warranty would be handled by Kogan NOT Apple.

Personally I'd pay another $20 and get one from a local supplier from the Ebay 20% off deal. For $20 more you get an Aussie power cable and can walk into any apple store for warranty purposes rather than dealing with Kogan's well know (for all the wrong reasons) warranty department.

      • i thought warranty would be the same, just a difference in Aus consumer law coverage. I could be wrong.

    • Thanks tomski182 and djz!

  • I have a few questions for those who are able to assist.

I currently use Plex/ Playz and stream from my MBP to my LG TV. Problem I have is any Mkv formats are rejected and when I try to play it via Playz app the TV just switches back to digital TV mode. I'm always downloading avi's or mp4 files which load fine.

If I purchase the above ATV will this potentially solve my problem with Mkv files and other different codes? I feel the bottleneck is my TV. It does run on webos2 if that assists, but im probably way off.

Would appreciate any help, thank you!

    • Google Amazon Fire or Nvidia Shield. Buying more Apple products to escape file compatibility issues is not going to end well.

    • +1

The cheapest solution? Download the app "Air Video HD". A service runs on your host machine that converts any format on the fly to the app, which you can then stream to your TV. It has handled every format I've thrown at it.

  • What would people recommend out of AppleTV4, TelstraTV? Mostly want to watch all the catchup tv channels which I was told AppleTV doesn't support, can anyone confirm this?

    • It's basically the latest version of iTunes, plus some apps.
And Netflix, and various legal channels like ABC iView, and all the local FTA channels.

  • +2

Get a case for the remote… Trust me.
The remote is made of GLASS like wtf Apple..

    • OTOH I think its very apple like to make one out of glass hahahaha

      Point taken though.

      • The original remote did not have a layer of glass on the surface.

    • I second this. I got a great one from Ali Express

  • I bought an Apple TV 4 recently, purely because I'm one of the few people who likes Apple Music over Spotify.
AppleTV3 doesn't support Apple Music. 4 does, so an expensive way to get Apple Music streaming through the stereo, when I could use Airplay, but worth it to me.
And that remote is great, once you get the hang of it. It's frustrating at first. I wanted to smash the thing initially, now I love it.

  • Good price, Apple TV is much easier to use.

Chromecast is a smelly hunk of crap, my 1st generation chromecast was incompatible with my TV and router and was more successful as a toy for my neighbours dog.

It was Apple fan boys before, now feral Google fan boys have come out to defend their piece of trash

    Give up

  • For those just after a device with a remote, that has Netflix, Stan, Presto, and all five catch up apps (plus Plex), there are millions of brand new Telstra TVs going for $50 on ebay / Gumtree atm (unwanted freebies from signing up with Telstra).

Also, the new Fetch TV Mini should be out within the next few weeks in HN, JB etc, retailing for $149 (has Netflix, Stan, Presto, all five catch up apps, FTA tuner, subscription TV, DLNA client etc).

    • -1

Doesn't telstra tv only work with telstra broadband? It won't work if you are with another provider right?

      • +2

No, you can buy it outright and use it with any ISP.

In order to activate it, you can just buy a $2 Telstra prepaid sim (don't have to add credit or anything) to become a Telstra customer, and use those details to log in / activate.

  • +1

    Chromecast 'just works'

    • Yes it does A++ for u today. I have 3, one in each room. It is great for videos
