New Laptop - Microsoft Surface Pro 4?

Help! My kitten fried my 2013 MacBook Air and I need to get a replacement. I'm thinking about going back to Windows and considering and was looking at the surface pro 4. It's more expensive than I want to pay, can anyone recommend them? Or suggest a good replacement for the air? Im not a gamer so really just use it for office and stream shows on it.

I'm hoping to find something with the end of financial year sales on but not finding any great deals. Typing on a phone is killing me!

  • $1188 seems ok to me

or even the Dell http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-13-7000-2-in-1-6th-… (remember 20% off that price). a heap more powerful than the air or pro4

someone posted Airs for around $1100 just a day or so ago - but it was the lowest spec model I think.

asus zenbook is meant to be OK too, similar to an air I guess http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX305LA-13-3-FHD-Int… $1199 less 20% . somebody also posted asus manufacturer refurbs for $599 somewhere here too (maybe slightly different spec, check)

  • I have a SP4 and I don't recommend it. The battery only last about 5 hours, which is much shorter than I expected. It is good as a work machine, but not as good as a laptop as laptop keyboard are generally better than the type cover. As a tablet, it is ok, but you cannot use a normal powerbank to charge it. Logging in to SP4 using my face is cool though.

I'd steer away from the SP4, currently typing on one. Stick with a MacBook Air, better battery, better resale value, more reliable (by far). I would say I have to hard reset most days sadly. Great idea, but maybe the SP5 or SP6 will be the one they get right.

Wow, hard reset. I would suspect there is a problem with your SP4. Mine does what it does without any problems. Maybe get it looked at if it is still under warranty.

  • I have both and another windows laptop, prefer the MacBook air then the windows laptop. Hardly even use the sp4

I would look at Asus zenbooks. Whatever you decide, coming from Mac, you should go to jb hifi and have a play around with the touch pad/keyboards there. No windows laptop has a great touchpad

Dell XPS13 or Asus UX305. Or if you got the money import a VAIO S 13 from the US.

  • XPS 13 with 256gb and 8gb ram for $1519

Battery lifes goes for about 12 hours and the screen is amazing

  • Depends on your needs.

If you want a laptop that is very light and doubles as a tablet then SP4 is the best there is at present.

If you don't need tablet mode then there are far better actual laptops.

If you don't care about weight there are better laptops with 2-in-1 functionality where keyboard folds onto back of laptop etc (albeit bigger/heavier)

I have had SP2/SP3 and now SP4 and absolutely love it - but that is because for me I need it to be light, need the stylus, and use it as a tablet as much as PC

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I now really want a XPS13. But know I really need to go into a shop first and try them out, I've ordered laptops online before and have been disappointed. My MacBook felt and looked like a great machine but just don't like the user interface and I've had it for over 2 years. I'm definitely a PC gal.

    • Jb hifi stock the XPS 13 so you can go and try it out. It'll likely be cheaper through dell especially with the ebay sale at the moment.

      The also have the SP4.

        • Hi, did you manage to see xps in this category. I have refreshed the page many times every day and haven't saw anything

  • I have a SP4 and it's the best laptop I've had. Also the best tablet I've had. But if you now want the XPS13, I've heard great things about that too. Enjoy!

  • I have recently bought the SP4, its really nice in tablet mode and when using on a desk, but when I use it on the train (since I commute very far) it's a little clunky because the keyboard is too thin.

I have the M3 model and I can virtual machine Ubuntu on top of my SP4 so I don't have to dual boot and it works without (much) lag.

If you do have a big budget definitely go for the the i5 8GB model as Windows itself uses about 1.6GB - 2GB of RAM passively.

Or try the XPS ones. I have had recommendation from my friends about their quality as well.
