Kogan Agora 6 Plus

This is being trumpeted as the answer to two year plans (for those who have never heard of Xiaomi etc I assume) on news.com. Being compared with the Samsung 7:

Hmm, lets see what the proper reviews say first. Comments such as the following with no hands on testing are ridiculous:

"The real hero of the phone is the front and rear camera, which leaves the Samsung for dead.
While both the Galaxy and Agora offer UHD 4K video recording, the Kogan device has a 21.0 megapixel rear camera and 8.0 megapixel real camera, compared to the Samsung’s 12.0 megapixel rear camera and 5.0 megapixel front camera."

On the face of it, could be a decent option, but lets see. Kogan could certainly do with something to improve its reputation.

  • I think the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro is a better phone for a (slightly) cheaper price based on the statistics.

    Same display.
Xiaomi has a better processor in the Snapdragon 650
Xiaomi has a better GPU (Adreno 510 vs T860)
Kogan has better front facing camera
Kogan has newer OS (6.0 vs 5.1.1 on Xiaomi)
Xiaomi has bigger battery (4000mAh vs 2950 in Kogan)
Other characteristics appear to be the same.

In terms of connectivity bands, the Kogan has Band 28 which the Xiaomi misses.

Xiaomi is thicker, but has a smaller width/height.

    • And Kogan will probably never release OS upgrades while Xiaomi currently have MIUI 8 Beta (Android 6.0) available.

  • +1

What a crap hands-on review. Like they were written by one of Kogan's drones or something.

has a 21.0 megapixel rear camera and 8.0 megapixel real camera, compared to the Samsung’s 12.0 megapixel rear camera and 5.0 megapixel front camera.

Someone tell these idiots Megapixels aren't everything. There's a lot more to a camera than just megapixels — you can't just compare a camera base on that spec alone. There's other factors to consider such as lens quality and material (which affects how well it focuses, if there are any image distortions etc), the sensor size (which affects sensor sensitivity to light and how well it deals with low-light photography).

    • Pretty sure the writer has never even set eyes on one of these phones, but the camera apparently "leaves the Samsung for dead". Ridiculous.

  • Sounds good on paper but knowing the agora series and all the problems the past ones g had I am not holding my breath that this is a decent handset.

The chip set is already a let down from some benchmarks.

  • This office is on offer again at Dicck Smith at the moment for $349.
The specs state "The two SIMs work simultaneously, allowing you to make and take calls using both numbers."

However I cannot see anywhere Dual Standby or Dual Active. If their statement is true, then it must be active… Is I understand the terms correctly.

    Can anyone confirm?

  • I recently bought this phone as a quick cheap replacement for my nexus 5x.

It's ok. Camera is good in good light. Not so good in low light.

My main disappointment right now is I havent successfully managed to get mobile contactless pay to work. I think the nfc signal is weak.
