Wow thats a big phone.. my Note4 is big at 5.7". Sounds like a lot of phone for the $.

    • +1

Do you feel like you could go bigger after having a 5.7"? Personally I'm not sure if I'd like a 6.44"..

      • I went from a 5.5" Note to a Z Ultra 6.4" and I definitely reached my size limit. However the bezels are much smaller on this device so maybe it wouldn't be such a PITA ;)

      • once it no longer fits into a pocket I,loose interest my 5.6" phone just still makes it into my shirt pocket. so,I can put it somewhere when I sit down to eat and not worry about forgetting it.

  • i would get one if i can get the 4GB version at this price

it is one of the biggest phone out there but it may not be for every one given the size of that thing
the chipsets today are more than enough to run all the way to Android 8.0 with 4G ram

    • that is if they decide to support 2 more updates to android or have moved onto the next model …. android don't seem to support updates to phones as long as Apple …. I guess with android once sales plummet for a model why waste money supporting updates if it doesn't lead to new sales.

      • Cyanogenmod, etc.

      • correct, that's the problem of designed obsolescence, units such as Nexus 4 can run 6.0 perfectly but its internal battery did not allow it unless changed at this stage of its product life
and yet android stop supporting it officially.

Apple still support Macs all the way back to 2009 on the other hand…. and iPhone 5 in 2012

android flagships should be supported for at least 36 months in software not just 24 month max, else no point getting them with the premium, just buy two mid ranges from chinese makers be more economical than a LG Samsung Nexus flagship

        • Apple still support Macs all the way back to 2009

Microsoft just ended support for Windows XP in 2014. That's 13 years after it was released.
Windows 7 is still supported too, that came out in 2009.

          and iPhone 5 in 2012

Mmm the number of complaints I've seen about old iphones running slowly after a large update makes me wonder if it's worth upgrading at all.

I was about to purchase Ulefone Future (http://www.banggood.com/Ulefone-Future-5_5-Inch-4GB-RAM-32GB…)

What do you think when you compare it with Xiomi????

      • MTK MT6755 Octa core 1.95GHz, 64Bit vs Snapdragon 650 1.82GHz

Ulefone would need a bigger battery but it has a smaller battery than the Xiomi but this Xiaomi Mi Max is a huge phone and is not similar to the Ulefone Future.

  • Realistically spec wise, what sorta say Samsung phone would this be the equal of? Thinking of when my and my parents phones need replacing… Wouldn't want to feel like it's a complete step back.

    • +1

At a guess the S6. Its CPU is quick and is very capable. 3GB RAM helps to keep apps more "alive" when switching between.

      • If it was 652, maybe, but 650 is more like Snapdragon 808. 2 A72 + 4 A53 is similar to 2 A57 + 4 A53 combination. So around LG G4 for CPU?
GPU was slightly worse, I believe? That said, with FHD screen, it'd probably perform similar?

        • All I can say is I have the note pro 3 with the SD650 in it and it does along nicely. I play lots of games and it doesn't even stutter a little.

I'm so happy with it I might wait until the successor to the 820 comes out. Originally I was using this as a temporary phone until the Mi5 came down in price but now I'm in no rush at all to replace it

        • +1

@brentsbits: My comment was more of a technical thing than anything, hexa-core vs octa-core and all; Snapdragon 650 shares really similar configuration in CPU to 808 was where I was coming from, Snapdragon 652 shares similar configuration in CPU to Snapdragon 810 and Exynos 7420.

GPU is something that I am uncertain about, since it's not as clear cut as CPU. I assume it's good, judging from your comment.

        • @brentsbits:
I'm in the same boat as you from the sounds of things. I bought the RN3Pro a month ago as a bit of a holdover until the mi5 dropped in price and I don't game. After using it for the last couple of weeks I can't see any need to upgrade unless something comes along with NFC and tap-to-wake for a similar price (not holding my breath)

        • @Oversimplified:

Fair enough, mine wasn't really supposed to be refuting it either, just a user experience for those who might be in the fence

        • @brentsbits: There is nothing wrong with chinese phones.

M2 Note owner here. For $200, you better believe more Australians would buy them if knew how cheap they are.

        • @cheapy:

Damn right. Wish I had a bit more capital at the moment, I'd approach them about distributing here ☺

    • +2

Slightly faster than an LG G4 but not at the 8 series CPU speeds. More than adequate in other words unless you care about 3D games or you have some special reason for wanting the fastest SoC ;)

  • -5

Back in my days, this was called tablet. Bet no one here was born before 2008.

  • meh… picked Xperia Z Ultra last year from MSY for ~ $300 ish. Desktop dock for $5 or so from DealExreme, awesome mini tab.

  • 6.44" and still only 1920x1080. Otherwise great specs in all other areas.

    • +1

if they throw at 2k or more screen on it, it be 100 more cause the gpu required to run that, just look what happen with Sonys 4k phone they cant power the screen with the GPU had to super sample the OS on its 4k 5.5 inch screen.
the mi max is still at apple retina display density.

      • +3

Not to mention the sacrifice in increased battery consumption from having a higher resolution. At ~342ppi you'll barely be able to distinguish the pixels during normal usage.

        • With 4850 mAh battery capacity, I wouldn't worry too much about power consumption.

Just for a basic comparison, I currently have a Samsung Note 4 that has 5.7" 2K screen and 3220 mAh. That means the Mi Max has an increase of roughly 28% in screen area and 50% in battery life.

If the Mi Max had an equivalent processor (and all else are equal), I reckon it's unlikely the increase in power consumption is anywhere close to 50%.

I know that you won't be able to distinguish pixels. Just that with a higher resolution, you can have smaller text, smaller icons and therefore fit more content.

Like I said, it's a great phone; just that with a larger screen size, you would expect a higher resolution.

        • @ronnknee:
I remember when I owned the xiaomi mi3 which had nfc, none of the banking apps supported it's use. That was about 6 months ago, maybe things have changed. Would be interesting to hear from any mi5 owner about apps working or not.

        • @PR0r: Were you replying to ebosh?

    • There is no need for anything higher speaking as a Z Ultra owner with roughly same size screen, same res. You will get marginal improvement if any and this phone is not at all suitable for a HMD which is really the only reason to require a higher resolution IMO, not that more isn't nice if only for a placebo effect.

      • I also have the Z Ultra, Is it worth upgrading to this?

    • +2

      "6.44" and still only 1920x1080."

Ronnnknee, this is a non issue.
I have 22" monitor and I can't see any pixel.
I had a 720P phone and I could not see any pixel.
anything more than 1080P is just wasting battery juice.

      Hell, even 1080p is overkill.

I would rather Xiaomi not worry about upping the screen resolution and focus more on other aspects of the phone.

  • -6

    6.44? How silly.

  • Waiting for a decent deal on the 128GB Mi5 Pro…

  • How is warranty like buying from aliexpress?

  • Showing as 428 at eglobal here

    • Did you forget to use the "welcome" coupon for $5 off?

  • Any global versions of the phone available? (factory sealed with official global ROM)

    • +1

All stock at the moment is Chinese offical stock. There is no global version or ROMs with modifications done. Stock should be sealed and untouched.

  • Thinking of buying one.
What does it mean by China version?

    • -6

      Loaded with spyware

      • Go and use your iPoo and IOS. You're not welcome here :)

        • -1

Prefer vanilla Android over spyware/bloatware Android

        • @BargainKen:

I've been using Miui for the past year. Works fine!! No credit card fraud or abnormal activity happening at all. If you're worried about your personal informations leaking out to other parties then you should stop using smart phone, Facebook, Messenger all together. Use dumb phones and write letters and go out to meet people instead of using social media applications. Just saying. ;)

        • -1

@HandsomeMonkey: Nah prefer vanilla. Happen to my old man, got a china-phone from Aldi and it came with adware embedded in the phone, needed to root to remove. Only need to get stung once to realise, I guess you've dodged this bullet so far and this its all fine and dandy. Wait till it bites you in the butt (and costs you actual money), then you'll think twice about what's running on your phone.

    • My wife's 1s came with a chinese os and it was horrible. SMSs were often missed, heaps of crapware. Came Very close to binning it. Found a global rom ( os) and its been great

  • I was about to purchase Ulefone Future (http://www.banggood.com/Ulefone-Future-5_5-Inch-4GB-RAM-32GB…)

What do you think when you compare it with Xiomi????

    never buy from eGlobal

their customer service is the worst to deal with, takes over a week for an email response and took over 2 months for a refund.

    • Hmm I guess you were unlucky. Having purchased the Note3Pro from eGlobal, they responded to my emails within a day or two. And I sent a lot of emails asking for delivery details.

    • +1

i have had positive experience with eGlobal with my last deal. Only bad thing was they didn't mention the item will only be back in few days untill i ask them specifically. but i would deal with them again!

      • +1

        .. me too!

    • That's around $450 AUD right?

      • Ahh yes my bad. I though Eglobal was in USD. So 403+37=$440AUD is still cheaper than Vickmall.:)

  • you're probably right…however this was my second dealings with them and both were very frustrating.

  • $383.00 Alliexpress - Whats Alliexpress like?

    • I bought many phones for my friends from Aliexpress.
As long as you get it ship via DHL should be fine.
note: something wrong then bad luck. Depend on the seller.
Same with eglobal it will take a while to rectify.

      • ahhh.. too late I purchased with the most basic shipping option. I'm a little nervous now :(

  • why don't we buy from aliexpress still the same GOLD phone?
I am calculating incl DHL delivery up to AUD$385-390.

    • How do you come to that calculation? Cheapest I can find including DHL delivery is around $409 AUD.

      • search from aliexpress xioami mi max under cell phone.
Look for the company name TOP ONE. Standard gift + Gold + DHL = US$294.88

        http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-XIoami-Mi-MAX-Mobile…

        • Yeah I saw that but US$294.88 is around $409AUD like I said not $385-$390 and also the processing time for that seller is 30 days. I sent them a message last night and still no reply. Better to go with http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Mi-Max-Snapdr… 20c US more and no free gift but only 7 days processing time and they replied saying they should send it out within 2 working days.

        • @aussie28: oh i see. sorry, I thought the conversion not that low between AUS and US $ looks like it is much lower than I expected.

  • Is this the international version that has preinstalled Google stuffs or the China version?

If China version, is too expensive as China can get for aud$320 exclude shipping.

    • Actually it could work out as low as $366AUD if you use Top Cashback to get 7% cashback plus $10USD refer a friend promo using this seller at http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Mi-Max-Snapdr… with DHL shipping.

    • Where can I buy the Chinese version for Au$320?

      • In China I guess.

        • LOL. Fair call. I was hoping mooreshady knew where i can buy it online for that price.
I wish Xiaomi starts selling here in OZ also.

  • -2

I was about to purchase Ulefone Future (http://www.banggood.com/Ulefone-Future-5_5-Inch-4GB-RAM-32GB…)

What do you think when you compare it with Xiomi????

  • -1

you can use the samsung note 8 3g as a phone if required to go even bigger. it looks just like the s3 only a lot bigger.

  • Can this one take windows 10 rom?

  • I purchased the phone from AliExpress and they sent me this message.

    'Much appreciate your order.
the Mi Max is published a few days ago, there is no global Rom and only original phone available. But the original phone only has Chinese and English without Google play.
If you need the original Chinese and English version, I can send it to you. If not, please kindly cancel the order and get your money back earlier. '

Can anyone tell me what this means in laymans terms? any suggestions on how I should respond? So I won't have Google Play??? Does that mean I can't install / run apps such as Gmail? Is there any easy fix so that I can… like reset and install new update?

    • This is fine. Basically means there isn't a "global" rom available for the phone yet. The global rom (software variant) has multiple languages. You'll get a genuine xiaomi phone from china that hasn't had any modifications. Personally this is what I go for, once a global rom is released you'll be able to install it if you want.

      • Thanks!

      • but it doesnt have google play? You cannot use googles app store the way it is

        • +2

          From https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2529006#r50463073:

All you gotta do is to open up the Mi Market app and search for "Google Installer" and install it. There are other ways as well but that's the easiest.

        • @eug:
+1 This is correct. Did this on my xiaomi mi3 years ago, nothing's changed. The global ROM shouldn't be too far away either

        • @eug: good to know

        • @PR0r:

I recieved the message from the seller: "Sir,at now we have the global rom. We can install for you if you want?"

I'm just wondering if I should get the seller to install or I should install? Any thoughts? I'm wondering if It could leave me vulnerable security wise and recieving a product which has been opened already…??? thoughts please.

        • @curtbruce:
If I was you I would refuse. It's fairly simple to flash the global rom yourself.
I have also looked at the offical releases briefly and there's only the Chinese ROM.
          You can check here:
          http://en.miui.com/download-302.html
It's likely they've come up with a custom/unofficial ROM which is easily replaced at your end with the offical should it arrive with it.

        • @PR0r: cheers thanks mate. I have replied and asked for it not to be installed.

  • +2

Placed order, use code SURVEY8 for $8 off!
Cheers op let's see how this goes

  • Has anyone's been shipped yet?

  • +1

So I just received mine, this thing is huge

    • That was quick. Where did you buy it from?
      Like it so far?

    • What phone did you upgrade from? Any chance of a photo or side by side? :D

      • +1

From eglobal when the deal was posted. It's really nice not any bloatware, sealed package.c I'm using a gold note 5 dual sim so not really an upgrade. Just wanted to have a play with a larger phone.
I couldn't do a side by side still at work but here's with a bottle of water
        http://m.imgur.com/Ju4loZQ
The gold is actually rose gold :/ and is only running 7.3 oout of the box

      • Wow it's huge! Thanks for that!

  • +1

Decided to pull the trigger .. but now nobody on aliexpress has grey in stock. Hope it comes back in stock soon.

    • Nice eug.. I am tempted to also pull the trigger and just pay a little more with eglobal.

  • Just an update, found 5 malware. Kind of regretting getting a China phone

    • Really? Wasn't it sealed as per your comment above ^ ?

      • Yep but after finally installing google play and an anti-malware programme it found 5 pieces of malware. I've downloaded an official rom from the miui site and will see how that goes. A great product just really sucks having to do all this just to make it work properly.

        • What malware did it find? What program did you use? Is it really malware that it found?
