I've never really understood why anyone would buy these, there's plenty of resources online for free which are as good or a lot of the time better. Nevertheless free is good.

    • +4

Haha I used to buy them for Pokemon and Mario Kart (over 15 years ago!). But yes, with YouTube, Reddit and other online resources, there's no need pay for game guides.

      • +3

Youtube? As long as you're happy to watch a 30 second ad, followed by a 20 second intro, followed by 5 minutes of talking about how easy it is to do something, followed by 10 seconds of vague footage of them doing it.

I know it CAN be good, but a lot of the videos on Youtube are horrible.

        • Something something Adblock.

I don't go on YouTube for everything. Sometimes seeing how things are done is easier than reading.

        • +1

          @ronnknee:

Adblock only blocks the first 30 seconds of my complaint 😀

        • @Putnum:

          Well up to you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's still a resource that I wouldn't rule out. Just like studying, you have teachers/professors, books, journals, internet, Wikipedia, YouTube etc. Some are more effective than others and it's up to the individual's preference.

      Unless they're collector's items.

      • +1

A collectors guide on how to complete a game? Patches and DLC often make them incorrect or incomplete. I can understand appreciating the artwork, but they won't have a significant resale value in the future.

    • +4

Yeah GameFAQ comes first. However its nice to have pretty pictures :)

Back in the old days in the 90s me and my friend fork out heaps of money on strategy guides and magazines. It was really cool when we were kids.

    Primagames site is down, ozbargained?

    • +1

definitely ozbargained… I'll put my hand up for contributing - love the 'guru meditation' errors (a la Amiga days)…

  • +4

My cheater, cheater son will love this, back in my day, you had to pay premium 1900 numbers by the minute for cheats and tips.

    • the good old days… not fun to cheat anymore hahahaha

    • +3

Sigh…I remember those days too. My addiction was Kings Quest 1 on an IBM PC Jr….
Nowadays…I can watch someone accomplish in 28 minutes what took me MONTHS to do.

I had to take a 3 month break from Ocarina of time because I was stuck, until I remembered I had to go to the graveyard at midnight. These days kids just google it.

        • +3

hahahahaha … thats awesome.. i've taken breaks from Zelda before but not for 3 months.. that's some serious frustration! mind you its an accomplishment in itself that you were able to remember what everything on the controller did after putting it down for 3 months! …

my best (brothers worst) memory of ocarina was my brother getting to the end and getting ridiculously frustrated @ beating ganon… gave me the controller and i beat him… he didn't talk to me for a very long time ..hahaha

        • @scud70: Oh no, you should have thrown it at the last second, you may need to pay for his therapy.

        • +1

I had a similar problem with that damn water temple.

    • +2

1900 numbers? Luxury! We had naught but Zork InvisiClue books.

      • +2

lol i went into news agents and read the tips as quickly as i could before the shop keeper told me to p*ss off ..hahahahaha

  • +6

Wtf why do they require such a complex password? It's strategy books!

Loved my final fantasy 7 guide……. Spent endless hours to breed the "gold" chocobo so I could get the Materia for the ultimate summon Knights of the Round from Round Island. Wanted so badly to finish and perfect the ending but was so sad when I completed the game too.

    • +2

You should see how easy it is now to breed one - they worked out the RNG in the game so you just need to buy a couple different greens , catch 2 chocobos and fight maybe a total of 20 battles

      No more racing until gold

Don't even talk to me about FF7, my kid took the controls when I was in the loo, and just breezed through the talk sequence, went to a different location, it saved and I spent weeks trying to figure out where the heck I had to go next. Then the PS1 crapped itself, I was an early pc gaming convert.

    • +3

Still got mine, and I have the original ps one black label game and eidos boxed PC game. Just to play it with glorious 3dfx

I've made it to the end of the game 4 times, (after building a computer with voodoo 2 SLIs it was such a finniky game, now you can just dload it on steam and it works on any PC)…. Anyway, got to the crater and for some reason I just never finished it. Maybe I don't want the memory to end.

  • +5

Most of these have been free for a few months on Prima, but at least it means keeping the collector's edition guide books sealed :-)

  • +2

Remember when cheat code / strategy guide magazines was a common sight in newsagents, and a "100% secrets & walkthrough" guide came in a CD sold as a standalone boxed product.

    • +5

and demo discs - i did not have many full games because of thier expense, but demo discs made life worth living!

  • +3

still love these guides for RPG's although they lack the detail they once used to have

  • Awesome sauce!
