My friend and I were the same, we got bored quickly on our first attempt. The new wall building mechanics turned us off.
We dusted it off the second time and had a blast though. building bases all over the island and setting up ridiculous zip tie networks was lots of fun. This was still in EE, we are due for a new playthrough now that the story etc. is all finalized.
Unsure if the game topped the first though, I think the combat loop and base raiding by enemies was a lot better in the forest, as well as the wall building and traps. Although cave exploration was a lot more fun in SOTF.
Yeah we gave it another go after full release but just didn't vibe it unfortunately!

Decent deal but…
I really tried to love SOTF, I really did. I thoroughly enjoyed The Forest. So when sotf came out even in EA I hopped on.
But it was just… Too different almost? The original game had a better atmosphere somehow. And being a little more simply to build worked in its favour. Especially earlier in EA the island was too damn big and too damn empty.
After playing with friends in the first game, and finishing it, I enjoyed it enough to start my own solo game, though I never finished, I couldn't even get halfway through sotf 'story' before I got bored, even with a friend.
If you enjoy these types of games though, it's certainly worth the try, but you'll probably want some friends to play with. It's a lot more tedious imo.
