OzBargain way to buy a TV

HI Guys,

I am looking for a TV for my parent's apartment. Nothing fancy, preferably a smart one, but I can give them my apple tv if needed for streaming. Their budget is probably under $2k.We will pick up a soundbar and wall bracket too.

What's the best way to buy a TV the oz bargain way? We have no brand or store preference. Should we buy gift vouchers with gift vouchers to save us some cash?

Go Kogan? Get 10% David jones vouchers? JB HiFi somehow?

How have you done it?

    IMHO:

    • If you don't need it urgently, wait for a decent bargain.
    • Consider the current eBay 20% off deal
    • If you have an AMEX card, register for the $50 cashback with good guys and also with Harvey Norman. But don't limit yourself to those stores, just register for the cashback in case you decide to buy something from them.
    • Just get a 'dumb' TV and a $35 Chromecast. The Chromcast is uber simple and I think it's way easier and better to use your phone/tablet than a clumsy TV remote.
    • FullHD is quite okay, 4K is probably still over the top at the moment and there isn't a lot of 4K content right now. Prices of 4K tvs will come down significantly over the next few years.
    • 3D is just an overpriced novelty
    • Do you really want to spend up to $2000 on a TV setup? I'm just using a $300 39" Hisense TV, $80 speakers and a $33 Chromecast.
    • Extended warranties are often an extortionate type of insurance policy. Unless it's free with your credit card.
    • Don't buy a HDMI cable over $20

Consider getting them to price match someone else… (once you include the delivery fees).

      • we have an amex, so I will work out if we get more off this way or with gift cards. Thankyou

        • Just register for those AMEX offers anyway. You don't have to use them but at least by registering it may come in handy, especially with the EOFY sales around the corner.

        • @inherentchoice:

Yea I think I will. If you're registered, does it come off automatically?

        • @theaussie: They'll give you a statement credit automatically. AMEX will send you an email confirmation pretty much straight away after you swipe the card or purchase online.

        • @inherentchoice: good one. thanks

      • I was thinking this. I have an apple tv, but chrome cast is obviously cheaper. I think this is a good start

They watch a bit of FTA but I think once I set them up with a streaming account, they will binge watch more often. I need to research how much is filmed now in 4k. Obviously not FTA yet

3D is just an overpriced novelty

      Not interested :)

Don't wan to spend that much, half if possible, I just didnt think I would have any luck getting a good soundbar and tv for less than that

I didnt know you could get warranty by credit card?

      Don't buy a HDMI cable over $20

no way! my last one was $8 :)

      Thanks very much!!!

      • I think there's some stuff on Netflix in 4K, some stuff on Youtube and a few 4K Blurays. But pretty sure even the latest video games aren't taking advantage of 4K yet. Free to air DVB-T in Australia is broadcast in 1080i, but only on the HD channels. Other channels are like 576i.

        • This is a big help. Thanks for answering :)

  • The good guys currently have 20% off on ebay.

    Usually pretty good prices.

When I purchased my Dishwasher on Ebay I was later able to claim the 20% price difference guarantee as the invoice price showed the full price it did on the website (ebay pay 20%). I have been told that this hasn't worked for some people.

    • I must look into this. Thankyou

  • This deal seems alright: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/248233 You could still find something cheaper but at least it's a reputable brand.

Personally I'd leave it till June. Retail has struggled this year, and I (personally) think that EOFY sales will replicate Boxing Day sales in some ways.

yea, i think they can hold out until then.

Im just getting prepared to jump on a bargain then do some crafty savings of my own :)

  • Anything but Kogan or Kogan's "Dick Smith 2"

    • Did you ever buy a Kogan TV?

    • got an email from dick s/kogan and apparently theres some of their TVs that include samsung panels now. If that is so, i would imagine it to be quite decent.

my brother has a kogan. 2 years old. it's quite decent.

    • Brother's 39" Kogan Full-HD LED TV just died after 4 years. The picture quality was not great, the back light would bleed through and colour was slightly off. Very cheap TV but you do get what you pay for.

The original Dick Smith TV's are much preferable to Kogan/Dick Smith 2. We also own a 42" DS LED TV and 19" DS LCD TV. Picture quality is good for their price.

check out aldi TVs. - 60 day no questions asked returns

Bauhn Black Series 58" 4K/UHD Smart TV $899 @ ALDI (from Saturday 21st May)

  • I bought a 48-inch LED TV with a USB port from Gumtree about a year ago for $180. It's on every day for many hours and it 'has not skipped a beat' / I have had no problems at all with it, it is much lower wattage than the plasma it replaced, and there were also other benefits that I did not even anticipate (it's quicker to 'boot up'/responds to commands from the remote more rapidly, when reception is bad it does not emit terrible sounds like the old plasma used to, it weighs almost nothing, etc.).

I realise GumTree' is not for everybody for various reasons, but you did ask 'How have you done it', so I thought I would share my happy story.

    Best of luck.

    • I have actually thought about this…but its a risk as you are relying on the seller's info about the tv. sometime syou do get a bargain though so I will keep my eye out!

      Thanks

When I bought my TV after researching it on whirlpool, I searched around for the best price it had ever been offered then rang store after store to see if they could sell it for less than that. After lots of "no" I got a "yep" and paid for it on my Coles price protection CC. 6 months later it was priced even cheaper on a post xmas special and I claimed a further discount.

    • oh wow, do you know what other CC companies offer this policy?

      • Myer Visa and 28 degrees spring to mind.. see here but I don't think many offer the protection as long as Coles being 2 years.

The merchandise protection is also a great feature. Had a screen crack on a $300 tablet. The quote for repair was way over that. Coles credited my account with $300 plus I got to keep the tablet. It's still working fine. That was my best use of the insurance so far.

        • Thanks. Im pretty sure my folks had a coles myer card that may now just be coles. I'll get them ti have a look at it. what a big help!

  • Just about to get myself a new TV so good hints here and thanks - re the sound bar - I want something that will do radio as well as the TV so I can watch the cricket and listen to the ABC radio and have a remote that I can switch to Channel 9 when I want (not that often) any suggestions and not too expensive- cheers

    • my way is probably backward, but I would just get internet radio on my phone, bluetooth it to the soundbar and watch the tv?

someone here probably has a better idea
