Aldi or TPG

Both Aldi and TPG have comparable plans at the moment: $20 for a month including 1.5G of data.

Although TPG has half price for first six months, but from comments it seems they charge more for SIM as well as prepay credit and porting out fee.

Grateful for comments about which one I should get. Live in Canberra. I currently have $20 Virgin Mobile plan with 1.2G data.

    Jeenee Mobile - 1.8gb 200 mins Ulimited text for $18 a month.

  • One thing to be aware of is that Aldimobile doesn't offers International Roaming. I have never paid for IR, because the only thing I use it for is to receive SMSes with verification codes for free, e.g. from banks, credit card providers, etc, in case you need to. Most of the time overseas I switch off the SIM.

    • Do you put phone on flight mode? Otherwise how do you switch off the SIM?

      • Dual SIM phones have individual SIM controls.

Boost mobile are another option, $20 per month, 1.5gb with 500mb extra each weekend
Aldi or Boost would be the choice for me as they are both on Telstra 4G

  • Can economy providers provide a rollover benefit, probably not. I'll use T's Freedom Plus, 300% (4.5gb) more allowances by the 2nd month if none used at the 1st- counting night gb. Content credit accumulates. Starter packs are at hand.

2-1G might be too low to recommend, but AldiM is acceptable. Same goes for Vodafone's KoganM for being last to 4G (1800 850): otherwise[$20 3gb unltd

    • Rollover data = cannot port number = cannot get Telstra Prepaid at 50% off or better though.

    • True. Have implimented the above in 1 set-and-forget account also for dollar-pool benefit. Transfer In recharge credit gift-of novice user(s).

More willing users, myself included pick out the $5,$1,$15 Telstra Packs $12 Vodafones, at promo, and with~ $8.75/SIM, number porting or $-added.

  • I've been with Vaya/Optus for a few years now and unlike many on here have not had any of the well documented problems.

However, the emergence of Telstra 4G coverage for close to what I am paying now for Optus does have appeal. Optus has always been a bit patchy reception wise, even before Vaya when I was with Optus directly, and I assume Telstra would be more consistent.

Aldi, Woolworths and Boost all seem to offer Telstra 4G in various packages. Any others to consider?

TPG is on the vodafone network. The people I know who've used it have been unimpressed.

I can confirm. Specifically, for travelling around Australia Vodafone is the worst choice (for now). If you live in a high-reception area and only go to and from work you may be fine. Optus has improved somewhat in the past 2 years (most built-up areas now have reception in Tasmania, for example) but of course can't compete with Telstra.

I would not go for TPG even with 6 months free as the service is bad after they change their network to Vodafone.

  • This is what I have in mind, get a dual sim phone

    1) get a 10GB amaysim, expiry 365 days - 99.90
    2) get a Aldi pay as you go 365 days - 12c per min if I allocate 60 a year I get 500 mins a year/ 500 sms a year

    Total spending 159.90 per year, $13.33 p/m
    0.83 GB per mth
    42 Msg/Mins per mth

Note: for low data and call users.

Happy to hear what ppl think about the above.

    • Hmm well I have a policy of never spending more than 15 bucks a month and I get at least 1.5GB + unlimited calls or whatever Telstra's Freedom call rates are. My preference is to use Telstra $30 Freedom packs sold at 50% off or less but the last few months I've been using Vodafone $40 Prepaid Kits that I got for 12.50 that give 5GB and unlimited calls/sms from memory.

But you have a lot less work to do for a year ;)
