1500

It's that time of the year again!

Aldi snow gear sale is starting on Saturday 14 May.

For those who aren't familiar, Aldi do an annual special buys sale on snow gear. The gear, particularly the jackets and pants, are considered to be very good value for the low price. For those interested in heading over to the snow soon, it's worth having a browse of this stuff. Be aware though, the stores are usually known to be very busy on the mornings/afternoon of the sales, so be prepared.

General Notes:

  • Check previous year's post and comments for tips and useful discussion 2015 2014
  • Items seem pretty typical as previous years of Aldi snow sales. Although this only comes around once a year, and usually represents good value if you plan to head up to the snow a couple times at least (compared to renting).
  • The adults regular ski and snowboard jackets/pants are rated at 12,000mm for waterproofing. Personally, I have found this fine for normal snow sports.
  • The INOC premium ski jackets and pants are rated at 20,0000mm for waterproofing. This is an extremely high rating for the price it's going for.
  • I have checked out the helmets before, and personally, I am not a fan of the buckle. It has a latch that is very easily opened, which I think could be a problem in a bad fall (you don't want a helmet to pop off your head!). Perhaps others could add to this discussion below.

you'd want to list an item in the title before this post is pulled.

    • +1

yeh someone posted this yesterday but got pulled due to no bargains listed

      • -4

How is this one different ?

        • +7

          How is this one different?

        • +3

          @Gimli: No spacebar after 'different'?

    • +2

Yep, I'm getting there. Listing off each individual item.

    • +7

Care to show them at this price a month ago? These ARE 'bargains' no doubt about it.

      • +7

Where? They wernt on sale a month ago

        • precisely

    • +32

Some discounts aren't bargains. And some bargains aren't discounts.

      • Ur very good rapper mate

      • Some wise words man.

        • +1

          That's called wosdam!

    • +2

      Good observation.
Do you ever have anything new to say?

    • +4

Maybe change your attitude? A bargain does not need to be a discount. Right kids?

    • +4

Limited time items don't need any normal prices.

      • They still need to be a bargain though.

I don't see anywhere in the post how these save you money.

    • Is this ozbargain or ozreduction?

    • +1

Agree! To be honest, some stuff is pretty expensive to be called bargain. They could be a decent product at this price though but they're not a great bargain or deal what we call here!!

  • +13

Ignoring the comments about the definition of bargain…

In our experience Aldi Ski Gear has been consistently good for many years now. I've done 2 whole seasons in Chamonix with one of their jackets (bought here in Aus) and the only flaw was the need to re-sew one of the shoulder pads where you typically carry skis. It works, it gets the job done. It's all you need.

My wife is an international ski instructor (BASI) and loves the more expensive brands for style/badge but even she appreciates the Aldi stuff, along with Quechua in Europe. She uses heaps of the Aldi basic stuff as her employers typically only provide a jacket etc.

There's a lot of upselling in ski gear. Beware….

Also. Most people really don't need thermals in Aus….

Oh, an edit.. Many people will be warm enough if they just use a decent jacket along with sweat pants/tracky bots/joggers etc. Your legs typically stay pretty warm when moving.

    • +1

people really don't need thermals in Aus

IKR. Some days you can go skiing in a t-shirt in Australia, so lel.

      • Yes. That look on my ski coach's face as I took off my helmet (having worn too many layers). My head was steaming.

        FML

    • +3

Just to clarify, don't go skiing in just trackies. I'm pretty sure freddo is talking about not needing thermals underneath them.

    • Freddo - does your wife have any recommendations on which ski instructing course to take? (tried to PM you but couldn't).

    • Well… in regards to thermals!

If it's bluebird days… I agree, but if you're riding Eagle or Scott's chair on a fairly windy day at Falls Creek with medium visibility you'd be happy you had the thermals! Considering the cost of a lift ticket in Aus, you ride anything but a white out! I'll pack $30 thermals from Aldi as insurance! Each to their own!

  • Don't have an Aldi where I live but going to nz in a month. Would you say all these prices are bargains? Or well priced?

    • +9

You won't find (new) gear of this quality cheaper, at the start of the season.

    • +1

Yeah, the gear is rated well and is very cheap compared to other stuff on the market.
Here are a couple comparable mens ones I just found off Surfstitch going for much more here and here.
Both are going for 200 bucks, and have a 10,000mm waterproof rating.
The Aldi ones are at 12,000mm and are less than a third of the price.

While waterproofing isn't the only thing you're after, the value you get out of this gear is pretty good if you're only going up a few times a year.

If you can get to an Aldi somewhere, it's worth the effort if you got the time.

      • Thanks. I can only imagine though, on opening day of this sale, the clothing racks will be fully of people frantically trying to find their size.

  • I emailed em this morning saying "man you guys never get in the Barely Basics long sleeve T, there wasn't enough stock last time and it's been a year, when will they be in next?"

I go in today, hell of a coincidence, they are there. You think my size and colour is in stock tho?
    yeahhhhhhhhh……. nah
    :/

  • +1

I signed up for their email to be notified. No email yet. Fat lot of good that did. Thanks for posting the heads up.

Meh I just checked it all and it's all rubbish colours this year. (Same good designs but rubbish colour schemes)

    • +4

Colours? At this end of the market, why do you care?

      • Because I bought some in 2013 and 2015 and they were good colour schemes, this year not so much so I'll pass on renewing anything. Why do I care? Given the choice, I'd rather something nice looking than not. Duh?

  • +9

If you've never been to an Aldi snow sale then all I will say is it is a sight to behold and you better wear a mouthguard! It can get pretty crazy and not unusual to be 4 people deep and middle aged women throwing elbows and punches over a pair of ski pants!

    • +5

Saw a massive fight at my local Aldi last year during the snow sale

2 ladies were going at it scratching, biting and pulling.

Then their husbands/partners starting belting each other up

It was a sight to behold

      • Which branch was this?

        • +1

Located in a less desirable part of Sydney

      • must have been snowboarders;)

Your comment has been published by Fairfax… http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/business/its-all-downhill-fr…

Journalists today lol 3 year degree to cut and paste unverified comments off forums as an article…

        • @daydream: Haha but I don't think it's so different from interviewing randoms in the street.

  • +2

If you are going try to be well prepared before hand with sizing and styles already in mind. Also get to the store well before opening and have your trolley ready to go and it doesn't hurt to have a helper with you. If you are taking kids to the snow and want kids gear and adult gear I would highly recommend that both parents go, one takes care of the kids stuff and one of the adults (or both kids as that stuff tends to go first).

    • Agree, been there done it! This is a Mayhem sale on day 1!

  • +3

Feel bad for the person that posted this yesterday, although no bargains were listed as the prices hadn't been released then. He did put a lot of effort into it and it was their first post IIRC, don't recall their name(any help mods?) but hope they don't get discouraged from posting again.

Appreciate your effort as well of course, mudkipz!

    • +1

I didn't know that it was posted yesterday as well, but shout-outs to that person also!

    • The catalogue came out a week ago…

  • +6

I begin to wonder did ALDI rejects JV's job application before? He always whinge about every ALDI sales.

    Get over it!

  • So this is in-store? WA based so we don't have an aldi here unfortunately :( was hoping it was online deliverable, but reading comments it seems to be an in-store thing only?

    • The one in Joondalup is opening very soon! Two weeks I believe.

Also the butler one is currently getting built.

  • What's the difference between a snowboard jacket and a ski jacket?

    • +2

It -can- be the length of the back of the jacket and how much it can come down your backside when you sit down on the snow. Some leave a space between the waist band off the pant and the bottom of the jacket. This can be a cold spot.

It -can- just be market language and have no difference.

It -can- simply be colour scheme.

      • Fair enough, cheers!

      • How about the difference in Snowboard pants vs Ski pants? They look almost identical!?

        • Sometimes snowboard pants have an extra bit above the waistband at the back to help close the gap when you sit, mostly it's just marketing speak.

        • @bigspike: Suspected so! Thanks!

  • +1

I read on in some snow areas that last time Aldi has the snow chains, they were found to be of inferior quality - eg Mount hotham apparently are taking exception to them - see: http://www.snowatch.com.au/forum/threads/7286-Aldi-snow-chai…

Some snow areas discouraging their purchase.

    • +1

last year (2015) they had the design that was approved for use in Victoria while the previous years (2014 and older) did not meet safety requirements.

  • +2

used Aldi snow gear for 5 winters in NZ, can't fault them…since we are 2 adults and 3 kids…we saved so much money compared to the fancier brands…more money to spend on lifts and equipment hire…

  • +2

can't fault Aldi snow clothes, equal to my Burton, 686, Analog snow clothes.

  • +2

+1 for the gloves too. I never had a problem with mine and they held their own, performance wise, for at least one season against my Dakine's which were several times more expensive.

  • Can anyone comment on the quality of the rolling duffel?

    • This is the first time I've actually seen that item featured. I don't think I've seen it in the past couple Aldi snow sales, so I think it could be new.

      • On last years list there was a '100L Split Level Roller Bag' which sounds the same

        • Ah fair enough. It does sound similar.

If anyone else has info, please chime in.

  • +1

Wow get in quick guys! Everything is selling like hotcakes and there aren't a lot of hotcakes.
Went to Springvale South / Heatherton Road one there was maybe 10 pairs of INOC premium ski pants, only 3 medium. About 15 sets of INOC premium ski shell jacket.
$9.99 merino accessories were all thrown together and altogether there were maybe 15 assorted accessories.

  • Waterloo - I went in and not much left of inoc premiums, got my stuff but people left empty handed !

  • Wow the INOC brand (premium) items have gone up significantly in price.

  • -1

If anyone missed out, I got ski pants brand new from ebay for $100 a few years ago. Best ski pants I've ever had - great waterproofing, warmth and a bit more stylish than these Aldi pants. Twice the price, but still heaps cheaper than any retail ski shops in Oz

  • +1

Should also mention, it's worth going back next day after the carnage. Lots of people try stuff on and find it doesn't fit, or they don't like the style and it's easily refunded. I've been back next day in previous year sales to find that what I couldn't get on the day was returned and put back out! It's worth it to drop in and have a quick rummage.

Aldi staff also tidy up the bins and put everything back where it should be!

  • Oxford square still have decent choice at 11.30.

I went at opening and was busy with families, mostly looking for kids and ladies stuff.

I bought almost double to be sure of sizing ,will return tomorrow the rest.

Quite happy with softshell complete for me and my partner.
Ski mask is very good value, wool socks good too but not so cheap.
Gloves are disposable quality, would stay on the cheap one, the premium model is not ab bargain.

Merino s top is great quality, I strongly recommend merino wool instead of thermal, dry faster and smell less.

Got helmets, but not so sure about the quality, I would not suggest it for kids.

As a note, they have the wheat pillow hot\ cold for 9aud, great value and I find it very useful pre and after sport.

  • Went aldi but they are selling out fast. I then saw that rays outdoors has 50% off all their snow gear from outdoor expedition. Pretty comparable to aldi too

  • +1

Crazy sight at Maroubra Aldi this morning. People are already lining up at the gate at 8:30am, and people actually crawled in when the gate opened.

    • Gotta want it scotty, ya gotta want it. I'm not big on crawling, but I think I am going to start working on my leapfrog skills, in preparation for next years sale.

  • Oxford square 2010 Aldi has still decent quantity, no Premium though.

  • so my gf and i went past an ALDI today in Warrgul in regional VIC and there was HEAPS of snow gear left. If anyone in the area was still looking…

We were enroute back from a weekend away. Pretty lucky. Can guarantee there would be nothing left at the inner city ALDI's

  • Any comments on this thermal gear ?

Thinking about picking some up if they are decent..

  • Anyone here swapping or selling any of the Aldi 2016 snow gear? Got myself a medium sized women's jacket but looking for a small..

  • Anyone know if there's any snow gear at the new Aldi stores opened in WA today?

  • Returned a HEAP of gear to Aldi Bentleigh today. Mostly mens jackets in sizes M and L, as well as the same for the pants.

  • Before I return it to Aldi, does anyone want an unused Men's Adult premium "INOC" ski pants small? I'll sell it at cost. Located in Northcote for pickup.
