Only took the gubbermint 7 years to become aware of the issue. I'm impressed.

Not the governments fault SCA sell crap not made to the safety standards.

@t_c Your "impression", would come when the stand failed :)

      BTW OP

I always put a car tyre under the car if you are also under it, even if supported by car stands

I wouldnt rely on this at all. Better than nothing, but a falling car wouldn't necessarily be stopped by a tyre, as it would depend on the underside of the car where the tyre was positioned. Older cars with a chassis might be better but newer cars underside could just buckle and the car still squashes you.

      • well obviously… not going to put a tyre under the exhaust pipes….

        • .. Dad, I am not being critical of you, just pointing out that its not a very good extra safety method. One I used to use. Until it was pointed out to me that, Tyres are made of rubber, so will compress. The rim will help. depending on the surface its on (Concrete better), but the car underside can flex and things that are lower, depending on where you are , can crush you.

So as I said better than nothing, but not very good.

However as others have said, its a good post, regarding the recall

        • @RockyRaccoon: lol tyres actually saved my car the other week. They do compress, but I had two stacked on top of each other either end. My car still got a scrape though :( Oh and I was using THESE jack stands…

        • @subywagon: Of course two tyres stacked are far better than just one. That's better advice

        • +4

          @RockyRaccoon:
Wait I have an idea… what about THREE tyres????!?! Yes!!

        • +2

@leeroys_dad: Wait wait. How about… FOUR tyres!

        • +1

@subywagon: Could you please describe which part on the stand fails. Is it the pin snapping, the welds shattering, metal slowly bending.

Am wondering if the stands give any scary warning signs before they let go so that owners can get out quickly.

          @Mumbles:
I am really impressed with your desire for a bargain that you would consider continuing to use these!

        • @mskeggs: No, no, no. I don't recommend anyone stick with them. All my stands are hand me downs from family members so I've no idea where they bought them from. Am just curious if there's time to escape a failing stand.

        • @tomsco: actually, four tyres, two at each corner would be a good idea :P

        • two at each corner

So now it's eight. Jeebus, gotta get me a stack.

        • I put tyres on a rim under, otherwise the tyre will definitely squash. I'd prefer to use a big block of hard wood though, you know the type for splitting fire wood?

Good on ya for letting people know.

  • Thanks for the heads up, will return those stands ASAP!

  • Thanks for the heads up.

Bought this SCA 3000kg stand from OZB post deal in 2013. Still the stand sits in the garage unopened - waiting for recall??!

I'm using them currently… My wagon has been on them all week. I put a gearbox in from underneath while on these. So far, so good!

Things you don't want to fail:

    • Products that stop 1000kgs+ from crushing your head like a soft grape

Seriously SCA, crappy sponges and cloths I'm okay with, but these? Charge more and make them safe!

    • Looks like their latest version meets the standard and they have it on sale at $50 for a pair with a trolley jack:

I still have the original box from the recalled SCA stands. It states in large writing the stands meet AS/NZS 2538:2004. Just because the marketing says the standards are being followed doesn't mean they are.

  • O wow, I got 2 pairs of these, lucky I didnt use. Guess it pays to invest in a decent pair. Now the drama of getting them back to SCA for a refund.

    • Yep,have the same……and reciept long gone. What do we do?
Luckily, I still kept the box for easy storage

The cheapskate in me wants to find a cheap second hand pair and then take them in for a profit.

  • Thanks for this post. I just happen to own a set of these. Purchased them a few years ago and never used them. No chance of finding a receipt, but they should refund the current purchase price.

    • If you are a SCA club member they might have a record of the price you paid.

Just returned my stands. The recall was announced today so the staff member was surprised that I heard of it so quickly without being an SCA card member. I was asked when I purchased them, and 2 years ago was my best guess. The refund was $60 in cash.

  • I questioned these from the get go.

I made my own out of scafoldfeet that are threaded, got a 2inch pipe with 3 mm wall thickness and welded a half cut box tube with wall thickness of 5mm on top then slid them over the scafoldfeet feet. Very strong. And easily adjustable.

Made a third one and put it under the enner pack and managed to bend the box tube slightly opening it at 2.7 tonnes and I was happy my VL has been sitting on them for a couple of years.

    • Made mine for nothing.
Offcuts from timber sleepers. Builders and lanscapers throw offcuts out.
Cut them in squares and put as many as you need one on top of the other. Store them in a milk crate…also free. ;-)
      Undestructable.

      • Mine are free as well from my old job. Great being in the maintenance field.

  • So is it only for the 1200kg ones?

These ones would be fine then?

  • Thanks OP. Returned mine this weekend. No issues with SCA. Luckily I only used it once.

  • I just push my car onto its side

  • Thanks. Just randomly clicked into the automotive forum and saw this. Will return asap.
