    best 2
    - wheat biscuits (it must be weet-bix) - $2.99
    - baked beans (premium made in Australia) - 79c

    worst
    - choc chip biscuits in a bag - lacked flavour

    • No way are their wheat biscuits the same as weetbix. I find the aldi ones much smoother and creamier in flavour. Much preferred. When we were kids we would only in weetbix, but now I've turned :)

      • Probably less healthy though….

        • I'd say they would be the same ingredients…?

        • +3

@treeman: Honestly wouldn't have a clue. In my experience things that taste nicer usually have more sugar etc unfortunately haha

        • The nutritional information is almost identical. I find the Aldi ones to be a little more crispier.

    • Disagree with weet bix link; Aldi ones taste like cardboard and have poorer nutritional values…

      • They taste identical, not sure about the nutritional value though.

    Best

    -Bread 85c

    Worst

-Cheapest Pies - fall apart too easily

  • +1

    Worst:

Aldi frozen mini quiches. Taste so old and are wayyyy worse than the more expensive alternatives at Coles.

    Best:

Aldi Cola. Can't tell the difference to normal Coke and it's about 95% cheaper than a 600mL bottle for $5.

    • +7

Where are you buying coke from?

A 2L bottle is like ~$3 at Coles.

      • I was using an extreme example. A 600mL bottle is $5 at Grill'd and many restaurants. Also at many sports/entertainment venues. Even at Coles a 600mL bottle is $3.85.

        • +5

I think a fair comparison would be for similar sizes. You could say a 250mL bottle of coke in a fancy restaurant is $6-7.

        • +11

Apple and oranges mate. :) Comparing restaurant prices (or special events/vending machine) to supermarket prices is not a fair comparison.

Even at Coles a 600mL bottle is $3.85

It isn't really imperative to buy the 600ml. There's always the 24 can (375ml) @$17; or the 2L bottle @$3.

Personally if you can abide by pseudo-cola, that's great. More power (and savings) to you. :)

        • +1

@gearhead: Dental decay and diabetes too! Winning!

    • I once drank Aldi soft drinks and when I toto the toilet it came out the same colour. Never had them again since

  • +3

    Best:
    Chicken nuggets
Canned tuna - sweet chilli is the best!
    Eggs - because they're cheap
Crushed ginger - way cheaper than Colesworths (but not always available)

    Worst:
Frozen vegies - no flavour whatsoever
Short cut bacon - cheap but doesn't have the smoky flavour of Woolworths deli bacon
Light milk - doesn't froth as well as Colesworths light milk, even in the Aldi milk frother
Crackers (Jatz equivalent) - no flavour and overly crumbly instead of crunchy

    • Woolies egg cheaper

    • +3

      Aldi eggs are not refrigerated

      • +7

I don't think they need to

        • +2

Correct, aussie eggs aren't washed so they retain the natural bloom (coating).

    • +16

Just remember free range guys, think of the chickens

        • +2

If you're not doing it for the chickens, give it a try for the taste improvement

      • +7

There is no legal definition of free range in Australia.

Even the various RSPCA and certified organic labels, while superior to cage, aren't wonderful: http://www.makeitpossible.com/guides/egg-labels.php

Even the two RSPCA "free range" options allow them to be debeaked and the "access to an outdoor range" is usually incredibly limited.

Certainly better than caged but still very much factory farming conditions.

        • +4

What about this SBS article urging customers to boycott all these brands after the free-range definition was announced: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2016/03/31/consumers-urge…

        • -1

Ahhh the RSPCA that euthanizes roughly 40,000 animals per year … Between 25%-30% of the yearly intake. Yup. Pretty sure even PETA has been linked to mass euthenasia of animals. Game, set, match.

        • @fairyprincess: Thanks for that. So based on your article and also did a bit of Googling of my own and it looks like Sunny Queen Farm eggs are the only brand that is ok at Coles and Woolworths. All the other brands have higher density living and arent considered to be proper free range.

          http://www.sunnyqueen.com.au/freerange/

Also this is another interesting article by Choice on stocking density etc - https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/meat-fish-and-eggs/…

        • +1

@kywst: With the RSPCA it's usually for reasons of animal welfare (or ending the suffering after a serious lack of it) whereas with PETA it's their totally warped "humans should not own any animals" standard which drives them to kill healthy animals (pets mainly).

      • +4

I will buy free range the day we actually have a PROPER certification process. Not the BS marketing crap simply to extract more $$$ from guiltshamed consumers. In the meantime I'm going for the cheap 'tortured' eggs.

        • Yeah, good idea. I'm going to buy cage eggs where there's 0% chance of the chickens being treated humanely, because there's not a 100% chance the free range eggs I buy are free range. I also refuse to recycle because there's not a 100% chance of my recycling being treated properly. Up yours, statistics.

        • +2

          @Wampus:

          LOL talk about strawman.

FACT - Most people who buy free range don't even know what free range is. They just have imaginary (marketing driven) pictures in their heads of chickens prancing around. Couldn't be further from the truth for the vast majority of 'free range' labelled eggs in Australia. But yeah you're free to throw money away if it makes you feel good.

        • +1

People arent throwing their money away because it makes them feel good. Theyre being lied to by the media and obviously laws need to be improved to regulate what is actually considered to be free range. It seems that 1500 chickens per hectare is considered to be what actually should be free range, but most farms dont comply to that standard and stock around 5000 to 10000 chickens per hectare. It appears that the only farm that has 1500 chickens per hectare and is sold at Coles and Woolworths is Sunny Queen Farm eggs. You are armed with new information now so you can buy more humanely under improved conditions. I am not sure however if the chickens at Sunny Queen Farm are debeaked or not so they wont cannibalise each other and I imagine the males are probably still ground up there because they are deemed useless and cant earn their keep, but at least their situation has been improved. Preferably I guess you should not eat animals or their products, but at least the concept of free range is trying to improve the quality of life of the chickens and give consumers the option to purchase more humanely if they want to.

        • @gimme: If only there was some sort of way I could google which free range eggs were genuinely free range and then make an informed decision when I went to the supermarket! Ah well we can only dream.

      • Yes - Always buy free range, encourage the market to improve animal welfare.

Also, Aldi Frozen Veges? Always check where it's made. Used to be China, then "New Zealand" (China, with NZ's dodgy labelling laws). Or "Made in Belguim from imported ingredients". Ok… China?

        • woolies is the same on things I looked at a while back. (have bought any for ages)

      • -1

In my mind at least, by supporting free range eggs, i am also supporting habitat loss for other animals. So, as much as I'm against animals suffering, seems like caged eggs is the lesser of two evils.

    • +2

Re the ginger you can also just buy fresh ginger and put it in the freezer and grate it as you need it

  • +2

Best: Wheat biscuits, every bit as good as Sanitarium. I swear I once saw a Sanitarium carton in the carton recycling. Also the soy milk, not as good as So Good but close.

Worst: Hard to say since I stop buying once disappointed but I'd pick the tomato sauce. I have to have Heinz or at least Masters.

    • +4

Here's a recent review of tomato sauces at different supermarkets. Heinz is ranked 1 and 3. Masterfoods is 7. Aldi's Colway brand was ranked 2nd.
      http://www.goodfood.com.au/good-food/top-10-cook/tomato-sauc…

      • +6

Unfortunately taste is very idiosyncratic where sauces are concerned, it depends a lot on the formulation. I'll never like Colway no matter how many awards it gets. Chacun á son goût.

    • Interesting, I rate the soy milk as being their worst product. Then again I can't stand So Good and will only drink Vitasoy.

Peanut butter is good, cheap. Kids love the frozen cod portions. The tofu is good and reasonably cheap. Some of the muesli bars are a bit sketchy. The fruit and veg selection generally sucks.

    • Is this the normal or lite or organic soy?

    • No; try them side by side! Aldi sell the small pack of Sanitarium Weet Bix also; have a crack and then feed back… :) Original is better.

Maybe they are from the same factory though, from all the crumbs that get dropped on the floor, people's dandruff, skin flakes etc…

  • +11

Can confirm for certain that the Aldi frozen bowl meals (chicken satay and pesto spaghetti) are actually Lean Cuisines just in a different box.

    • +2

and all completely full of sugar

      • +1

        Completely, so 100%?

        • at least one donuts worth. There was a test not long ago that said a lean cuisine contains one krispy creme original.

I read this and thought of….

"It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do."

+1 for the chox, they're my alternative when Lindt runs out. Their Trimat detergent scored well in tests too.

These two journalists reviewed 36 sausages at all supermarkets in Australia. Four of Aldi's 5 homebrand sausages made the top 10.
    http://www.goodfood.com.au/good-food/top-10-cook/in-search-o…

  • Worst: Tea… We will go to Aldi to shop, and then drive up the road to woollies specifically to get some good tea.

    Best: Chockies… I don't like Cadbury's anymore… It tastes off.

      • +5

        Neg from me.

      • And what does halal taste like, mate?

        • +5

like he'd know. he probably thinks its a type of sausage.

    • Cadbury is average no matter where you get it from.

    • +1

Cadbury years ago used to be yum, now it just tastes like nothing.

  • Any ideas if they have any reasonable cheese slices similar to Coon/Bega?

I've only seen the big blocks, but I don't like having to eat the whole block. Some of it goes to waste as it isn't packaged in small amounts.

    • Oh I forgot to add the best product and worst.

      Best:
Tempura Chicken Nuggets - Tastes very similar if not better than Steggles.

      Worst:
Sanz Biscuits - Tastes like raw flour when compared to Arnotts Sao

    • +3

the real sliced cheese is perfectly fine, the vintage is good, all on par with bega I think (and probably their supplier)
no idea about the singles style wrapped slices - never bought them.

      • +1

Yeah I reckon Bega is their supplier too

        • Thats exactly what I thought

    • +3

Yes, Westacre Natural Vintage cheese slices (12 slices). Very tasty (no pun intended).

    • I am a vintage cheddar cheese lover and will wait for Bega Vintage 500g to come up on special at Woolies.

    • Those blocks are great…Mrs been getting for a while…we just whack it in a air tight container and lasts ages.

    • The Coles brand vintage is good too for $4.00. I buy that if Bega vintage isn't on sale.

    • I have tried the cheeses but not as good as Bega. My son loves the Cowbelle cheese slices though.

  • +2

    Best (quality and price):

    • Choceur chocolate
    • Light cheese, cream cheese, butter
    • Deodourant, shampoo, liquid soap
    • 75c flavoured cans of tuna
    • Frozen fish fillets
    • Coffee beans

    Worst:

    • $1 per 100g chocolate. Slightly cheaper than Choceur but vastly inferior in quality
    • Frozen stir fry vegetables. It's mostly cheap carrot.
    • Fresh vegetables in general. Small amount of stock, quite often old, and the prices are higher than specialist green grocers
