  • Ultra HD certified, THX-certified Video only

Currently there are only two 4k bluray players in the US/UK/Europe market (none in Australia)- this Panasonic UB900 and Samsung K8500. Samsung is cheaper about A$550 (releasing next month) but this Panasonic model is a higher end model and has very good reviews compared to the Samsung model.

According to Panasonic, the UB900 is not scheduled for release for the Australian market. Since this is from Amazon UK (not Amazon US), it will be 4k bluray region free and 1080p bluray Region 2 (similar to Australia). No problem playing your current bluray discs. Also it would be covered by manufacturer warranty.

      • Were the upscaled to 4k or filmed in 4k?
I'd say most arelike when MAS*H came out on DVD

Every copy of Enders Game in existence should be rounded up and shot into space.

@furiousgeorge: Weird. I enjoyed the movie (as someone who loved the books when I was younger).

      • +2

        Thanks for proving my point

      • I noticed Spectre isn't on either list. Disappointed!

    • +2

…that costs more than some 4k TVs

    • +1

That's what I thought when lazerdisc players came out at 2grand, and look where that went. :)

    • +1

      Yeah 2-3yrs they'll be >$100 in JB.
But hey if you've got money to burn.

      • +7

Their greater that $100 now…. Why wait ;)

        • Who owns what? So confusing

        • @thorton82:

          Touchè… Stupid phone typing

          They're :)

          @SBOB: yeah…. the phones stupid…

          @thorton82:

          phone's

        • @aboabo: touché. Don't I feel stupid.

        • @SBOB: sure sure blame the tools

      • I hope so too but unfortunately we still can't find $100-$200 Oppo bluray players in JB even now at the end of 1080p era.

    • +3

Again, just like DVD players and Blu-ray players in the past, if you are not in a hurry just wait and the prices will eventually drop to $100.

Samsung 4K UHD Blu-ray player for preorder at Rio for $495 with release 1St week of May-
    https://www.rio.com.au/product/samsung-ubd-k8500-4k-ultra-hd…

I would use the Samsung with its slight issues and wait until Oppo release their 4K UHB Blu-Ray player towards year end before dropping that sort of money.

One of the good things about the Panny though is that there is a Region Free firmware out, but you have to jump through hoops to get it-
    http://www.regionfreedom.com/index.php/enhanced-firmware/pan…

And as long as no import duty is incurred bringing the Panny in, there still is a 1-2 Month waiting time listed currently on Amazon.co.uk. IMO.

  • +2

If the rumours are true, you might as well wait for the PS4.5, which will probably be reasonably priced for a 4K player + game console all in 1.

    • -2

Or just use Netflix that is already 4K and built into your TV?

      • But I want to also play the 4K UHD Blu-Ray titles I have bought, as well as as VUDU 4K.

      • +3

Because everyone has 1Gpbs NBN connection, right?

        • The max bandwidth is 25mbps for 4K i think, (on Netflix). I've never had a single buffer on my cable connection.

        • +2

          @thorton82:

Yep. On WP people with ADSL2+ connections getting 4K with Netflix so you don't need an NBN connection. Though the quality won't compare to that of an UHD Blu-Ray physical title due to compression IMO.

        • +4

@thorton82: Then, I wonder if it's true 4K, or watered down 4K to allow for streaming.

        • +2

          @TheDonBossj:

I would lean towards the latter.

        • @Spizz: This is what I suspected.

        • @TheDonBossj: It looks fantastic. If there is a visible difference, it would be minute. The difference between 1080p and 4k on Netflix on a large TV is night and day. (The bigger the TV the better).

        • @thorton82: Thanks. I have an 75" Sony Bra - so, I shall keep Netflix in mind, although my current net speeds here are quite antiquated. Even YouTube videos buffer. Grr at NBN not here yet.

        • @TheDonBossj: See if you can get cable

        • @thorton82: Tried Optus and Telstra, they're unable to connect the service, unless I have ugly lines running down the side of the driveway and crossing visibly on the footpath. Messy. lol. Jokers. I have no choice but to wait for NBN now. I live in hope.

  • I got this one, won't this machine do the job?http://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/home-entertainment/recorders/dmr-bwt750gl.html

    • No it won't play or read the 4K UHD Blu-Ray titles. Only the Samsung model coming out here next month for $495 and the Panasonic model from the UK/US for $1000.

  • +1

seems like it is made of gold or something .. not gonna spend so much on this one considering prices for these players will drop significantly just like any other tech stuff…

    • If you don't want the high end Panasonic you do have a choice of the Samsung at half the price. And some players like Oppos don't end up dropping in price. But the mass manufactures do end up releasing latter models at cheaper price points over time.

    Keep this in mind folks.

When you go to the movies, do you ask yourself "is this in 4k?" probably not.

My point is, probably 90% of Hollywood films you watch are finished in 2K. That goes for the releases on ultra HD blu ray also. From your viewing distance, you probably won't notice a big difference. If you don't even think about resolution when you go to the movies on a 15-20m wide screen, so why are people so excited about it on their 1-1.5m wide TV?

Looking over the list trump3 posted, I can see (off the top of my head), maybe 3 films already released that were mastered in 4k (revenant, Sicario, chappie). The rest are upscaled from a 2K file. On the future releases, I can see (again, off the top of my head) maybe 2 or 3 titles that actually exist in 4k.

Also, let's say you have bought one of those three titles that are actually true 4K, you'd need to sit very close to your TV to get the benefit. I think 4K is great, although most consumers sit far enough that they're probably not even seeing the full benefits of 1080p, let alone 4K. If you're going to sink in the money, make sure you rearrange your room so it benefits from the higher resolution.

Unfortunately most things released in the past decade or so has been finished in 2K, and therefore we won't ever see it truly in 4k, from my understanding.

My opinion is, wait a few years, once they release older titles scanned in from film prints, and newer titles start finishing in 4K, and once you can afford either a massive 4K TV, or preferably a 4K projector, then it might be worth it. Texas Instruments has recently developed a 4K DLP home projector chip, so more affordable 4K projectors will start becoming available from start of next year I'd say.

Titles I'd like to see in 4K:
    -Lawrence of Arabia
    -Sound of Music
    -2001: Space Oddesy
-Anything Nolan has released shot on IMAX film

    Apologies for long post. Potato.

    • Great post. It's amazing how wilfully ignorant people are on picture quality.
People not even aware of compression on UHD streaming v disc media. Let alone you don't get HD audio on streaming.
For me, only interested in a tv upgrade when someone releases an 85" UHD OLED that meets the Rec. 2020 standard. Together with a quality bluray player that has the UHD disc sourced from a 4K master.

      Apologies for long post.

      Nah, interesting post!

  • Hmm the Xbox one supports 4k output, I wonder if it will get an update in future to allow for 4k blu rays.

    • Does it have the hardware to read a 4k disc?

      • I don't think so. Both the Xbox One and PS4 can output 4K but I don't think either will have the hardware for 4K Bluray playback. If they could patch 4K playback into a 2.5 year old console that's regularly around the $400 mark, why would Samsung and Pioneer be selling players at $500 - $1000? There wouldn't be a market for it to justify the hardware costs.

If rumours are true and the PS and Xbox get hardware upgrades maybe they'd add it. Sony in particular with Sony Pictures may want to pursue it. If costs are high I can see MS skipping it and banking on digital distribution.

        • Fair enough, I thought I read somewhere that it could but wasn't 100 percent sure.

        • @ohhidayo: I think both could (or can?) stream it for digital content.

Wait for PS 4.5 you'll get a 4K player and a game console.

    • +1

Do you know when the new PS4.5 is coming out?

      • +1

E3 is a month and a half away.

        • Awesome! Will buy one for my 4K TV.

      • Hasn't been announced, but apparently this year and developers will be required to support it by around October based on recent rumours.

  • -3

4K lets you see the film grain in glorious detail, but you'll need to freeze-frame it to see the difference from 1080p.

All new technologies are expensive when they first released.
