Which ATMs are the Safest to Deposit Money at?

I had a problem today where the NAB ATM basically took my cash but couldn't read it. It then had a screen telling me to remove the cash but the slot where you take your money is closed shut. What a scam! lol.

So from this I can infer that apparently the NAB Smart ATM takes your money for security purposes.
I know the CBA ATM returns your money if there is a problem reading it.

I am not familiar with how other Bank ATMs work but it would be good if we can get some comments about what is going on with these machines and if there are any weird teething issues with them.

There was nothing wrong with the cash, I even verified it a UV light and had all the security features…

The question is what are the safest ATMs to deposit at?

  • For a lot of cash, I wouldn't be using an ATM. Just go to a branch, it barely takes any longer

  • I have to admit that I've never made a deposit using an ATM, but I thought that the machine dispensed an envelope and you then put your cash or cheques in the envelope. Is that not how it works?

    • I've done it a couple of times and that's how it's worked.

That's is how the old school ones worked.

The new machines being rolled out, do away with the envelope. You place your money into the cash slot, machine counts the cash, asks you to confirm and credits your account. The funds are available straight away. They also take cheques in a similar fashion (clearance days applied). The super dooper ones even take coin.

Based on my own use of CBA machines, the new deposit ATM's don't seem to be operative all of the time, compared to its dumber non deposit brothers.

Only had one occasion when machine shut down for a smoko, right at the end of the transaction. It gave the cash back tho.
