    I think you mean Syd $876, not $786 in title. Great price either way.

    • +1

      Sorry about that, you're correct. Fixed now.

    Flying United Airlines would be a tough way to travel, but the price is excellent so I guess it's just best to suck it up!

    • +1

      It really isn't that tough. Flew a few months ago with United, wasn't that bad. Smashed myself with valiums and punched some zzz most of the way which helped.

      • Yep, best to be unconscious when riding UA.

        • +1

          That and a good set of noise cancelling headphones.

          But seriously though, humans are a precious bunch sometimes. There are people starving around the world, people going through cancer treatments, and we bitch about an Economy ride for a few hours. Seriously need to toughen up and get some sort of perspective on life.

          @robbiey:

          And I agree totally with people being sensitive at times.

          This is a 20 hour international flight, not a domestic 40min trip.

          Whilst your veiled dig is acknowledged, United Airlines is consistently regarded as one of the worst airlines in terms of services, comfort and value in the world http://www.airlinequality.com/airline-reviews/united-airline…

          @rawm:

          United used to be the worst but they have now rolled out the Dreamliners on the AU-LA routes. More comfortable atmosphere (humidity), seats, electronic tinting windows, in seat entertainment, etc. Also a direct flight from Melbourne to LA rather than going up to Sydney and flying from there.

        • @neil: thanks for the good news neil; United were pretty poor a few years back when i travelled to LA. Glad they've made positive changes :)

        • @neil: The direct flight and the Dreamliner itself was great, but everything else United was absolutely terrible. Terrible service, food, entertainment, arrival terminal, seats etc.

    First Virgin/Delta, then American, and now United for sub-$1k flights to New York. What a time to be alive.

  • +4

    The AUD must be killing these routes.

    • It's slowly going back up, so should actually be pretty reasonable for the travel dates provided.

  • +1

    So this is to LA then on another aircraft to New York? It's tough going in the back of plane and then only 2hr 20 layover in LA before another 5hr….. Flight!
    Done it 4 times in business over VA and once coming back in economy in middle seat…… Recovery takes at least a week…. Both ways. Noise cancel head phones a must!

      I did BNE -> LA -> NYC. Certainly is tough.

      But not as bad as Brisbane -> Singapore -> Abu Dhabi -> London.

      Things you do when you're young.

      • Me and my partner did Amsterdam -> Singapore -> Sydney -> Canberra last year. That Sydney to Canberra leg may only be a 30 minute flight, but boy were we tired and fed up by the end of it.

        Didn't help the layover in Singapore was only one hour so we didn't stop between gates, and Sydney's 2 hour stop wasn't exactly much of a breather either.

    why would anyone flight united i wonder if they still have those big tv screens and you need to watch what ever they put on and no tvs in the back of the seats like 99.9% of airlines have these days

  • Don't United fly the 787 Dreamliners to LA? At least SYD->LA route I thought.

    • I flew with United return to New York last year. MLB > SYD > SF > NY.

      On the SYD > SF flight I was on the older 787 model - no free drinks were given, although the plane was not that outdated.

      On the return route I did NY > LA > MLB which was on the 787 Dreamliner LA > MLB. I paid for the premium economy upgrade and thought it offered better comfort and value for not much more.

      I would recommend flying with United.

      • The upgrade is nearly USD$200 per seat each way for MEL <—> LAX - still do it at that price? Do they reduce it at the gate last minute or don't risk it?

        They have a 12 month subscription for USD$800 too.

        MLB = Melbourne, Florida
        MEL = Melbourne, Australia

        :)

    Hi Rep, what are the terms and conditions of this deal? Does it include meals, checked baggage (maximum weight?), baggage transfer all the way?

    • -1

      Hi StellaAddicted,

      Not sure. I would guess yes, yes (23kg), yes

  • I've got flights booked to NYC already with Virgin which I purchased at a much higher price.. tried to cancel the Virgin flights for this deal but Virgin says there will be a $200 penalty and they will only refund me via Virgin credit to put towards another flight and will not provide me with a cash refund.

    I'm assuming there's no way around this.. :(

    • Not if its in their T&Cs. I did this once - cancelled and received the credit (because of the flight fare). If you can use the credit over 12 months may work out better to buy these tickets and use the credit for local trips. Shout the mates to somewhere if they pickup the accommodation.

  • Any cheap tickets to Istanbul in June???

  • United Airlines are horrible. You will regret it. I promise you.

  • Hi Rep - Is a stop over in LAX possible to break the journey? I've found $1132 exiting Darwin (Darwin -> Sydney -> LAX -> New York).

    UA is utter sh*t, for a lot of reasons, not to mention total discomfort, noise, vile food, 1kg over on bags they complain, often cancel flights. I've done this trip, would happily pay 500 more to fly in comfort and not have to see a chiro/physio on landing and influenza from the non-existent air filter cleanings… Awful airline.
    If you're tall, or portly, do your research, their seats are like sitting on bricks and bloody small.

  • Why do you have to be there almost a month?

    • Because Trump's wall will be up and leaving will be difficult.

  • If travelling from Melbourne, bear in mind the United lounge closed down and now they use the Air new zealand lounge.

    With now three major U.S. carriers - American, Delta and United flying to Australia - which out of the three do you have preference for and recommend over the others? (of course theres other foreign airlines and Qantas - but keen to have your views).

    • Personally I prefer Delta. Had good experiences with them. Once I complained enough when the prices on my flight itinerary dropped, and they reissued the tickets enabling me to get a refund on some of that difference. Not sure how many other airlines would do this. I've also been upgraded to Economy comfort for free, and was allowed to change my flight for free due to emergency ($50 change fee waived). I don't mind using their website to find flights. They used to codeshare with Virgin who were also good. Now however they no longer fly direct from Melbourne so I've flown United (Dreamliner great, everything else completely crap), and flown domestic American Airlines (as I flew over with Qantas who codeshare with them) which was also a notch more terrible below Delta.

      Note 'good' is relative, as all American based airlines are crap.

      Guess it really depends on who flies out direct from your city of choice, where your final destination will be (so one airline might need two flights to get there from their hub etc), price and points. I now have 15,000 points with United which are essentially useless, but with Delta I earnt Virgin points so I can use them domestically here.
