Target Branded 11,000mAh Power Bank with Jump Starter $69

130

Was looking for some gaming bargain and spotted this marked down from $99. Features jump starter, LED light, USB port and multi-charging heads for laptops. Seems like an okay price for local stock.

  • I've seen them at cotd for similar prices $99 but how good are they?

  • are these only good for small cars?

    • +1

      Yes, something like this…

      • +2

        No good for yours jv.

    • i have something similar from banggood i think it was, mine will happily turn over a 4cyl for a couple of seconds at a time and a commodore v6 i tested it with jumped that "ok" as well but i really only got a couple of revolutions before it gave out. this is without a battery in the car at all, just the jump pack. if your motor dosnt start almost instantly with these they overload and time out, which for most things it should be fine.

with bigger cars with a fully drained battery ive heard people say you could connect one to recharge the cars battery enough to start the car but have never tried this myself and im not convinced that the little jump packs would have enough capacity in them to give the lead acid battery any meaningful charge before the power bank is completely drained without enough power to crank the motor any more.

all that being said, mine was not a target home brand and i have no idea how accurate targets rated power figures could be but from what i know of cheap chinese crap they could well be overstated power ratings anything up to a magnitude of 10x less than claimed values.

    According to the manufacturer…

    Input: 15V/1A
    Output: 19V/3.5A, 16V/3.5A, 12V/3.5A, 5V/2A
    Weight: 500g
    Charging/Discharging time: 5-6h
    Conversion Rate: 95%

    • 12V/3.5A

im assuming that isnt via the jump start outlet tho, that would need to be in the hundreds of amps range. iirc mine are 200a rated 400a peak.

      • Probably. Their product page is very vague.

  • Ive seen something similar dont no how many MAH but it did jumpstart a toyota camry without a battery as well

  • The idea is to hook it up to the battery for a few minutes and then start as the car battery will then help buffer the load.
I have a 6 AH SLA jump starter and used as above has started a couple of 4 Cylinder cars easily but without the original battery or giving it a few minutes no hope.

    • hook it up to the battery for a few minutes

have you actually tried doing this with this sort of pack? the 2 i have have a control box on the alligator leads which senses when they are connected (so as not to either spark/arc on contact or allow short circuit etc) and also cuts the power with in seconds (varies depending on discharge load from a couple of seconds to a few seconds) of them being hooked up to 12v.

all the lead acid (sla) packs ive used were all much much different to these and didnt have the fancy electronics like these jump packs do and are happy to be connected to a flat battery until they are completely discharged.

  • My aliexpress special has started a VY commodore a few times quite easily? I just hook it up and turn the key

Lol yeah my bangood special has jumped a few 4 and 6 cyl petrol cars. none of them mine lol. usually when someone asks if you've got jumper leads I whip it out. Every one of these people has said they will get their own one for sure.

The supreme irony is that I don't think it will start my car, its a 5cyl 2.7l Diesel. Will find out one day I guess, but would rather not.

  • Have just recently used this on a 4cyl 2liter car. Works ok so far. Saves me waiting for roadside assist.

  • Great for an emergency, but I read a while back each time you start a car with one of these it reduces the life of the battery quite significantly. Something like 7 or 8 car starts and it will be your new paper weight.
Has anyone tried it this many times?

    • mine will do about that many on a single charge. when i first got mine i pulled the spark out so the motor wouldnt start and just cranked it. mine would crank for 5-10 seconds before tripping off again and it did that 5 or 6 times before it needed recharging iirc. this was on a 1.5L. ive probably done 20-30 starts and about as many recharges (i also use it as a bank to charge my fone at times). ive not seen any degradation in mine in the slightest.
mine isnt this one, it was something i got from banggood iirc.

    • Nope, these have lipo cells in them, they are good for something like 1000+ full discharge cycles. (*Full discharge within the lipo parameters)

  • If you guys had a choice of this target one or this one at $184

which would you be more inclined to go for ?

You could buy 2x target ones and still have enough left over for a premium slab.

As an added bonus, 2x target ones connected in parallel would pwn that eBay one.

      • and being ebay its probably closer to 1,800mah than it is 18,000… best to stay well away from ebay for any kind of battery.

personally i was going to get http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__63791__Turnigy_Ju…

i have a heap of turnigy rechargeables and they are not only true to advertised specs but have been faultless over the many years ive been using them.

this is the actual one i have https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211708
i bought one at $30 and ended up "winning" one for $0.10 in that deal post.. mostly as a test to see if they were actually able to jump cars and work the way i wanted them too and they have been ok, only thing i really dont like is that if you leave them connected to your usb charger once they are fully charged they begin to discharges themselves till they are completely flat again.

edit: whoops, posted this in the wrong post! Was meant to post it in the updated post here.

Picked one up yesterday. There were 8 left at Target Toombul QLD, so it shouldn't be marked out-of-stock.

I took it apart to have a look. It's reasonably well-made inside. It's held together by two screws and two large pads of double-sided tape on both sides of the battery.

The battery is 11.1V 3,600mAh, so if you calculate it the usual way, it works out to be 10,800mAh at 3.7V which is slightly under their 11,000mAh rating.
The maximum pulse and continuous discharge rate is 40C, so it can put out 148A continuously.

It's made by Great Power who are reasonably well-established.

The battery manufacture date on mine is 19th Sept 2015.

    • Just purchased. 6 left at Toombul for $48.30

      • Sigh, I feel cheated now! :)
