Dear Tailgaters - What Do You Want?

Hi all,

Just wanted to understand the perspective of tailgaters and also hear from others in how they deal with the issue.

TL;DR: Why do you tailgate? How do you stop others doing it to you, even if you're going at the limit etc?

My most recent scenario was last night. 2am on the M4, on my way home. Posted speed limit is 90, so I'm doing 90, in the left-hand-most lane out of three lanes. The motorway is entirely empty except for one car behind me, which speeds up and sits ridiculously close to my tail. I mean, at some point the headlights were partially disappearing in my rear view mirror because the car was pushing up so close! The other two lanes next to me are completely empty. He stays there for a good 4-5mins, and all I can think is how unsafe this is, but I refuse to go over the speed limit because he can clearly overtake. Finally, I tap on my brakes lightly to try and get him to back off - once. Twice. Three times. He finally gives me some distance, but after 30 seconds he's back again. Sits there for another few minutes, and again I tap my brakes which causes my car to slow down a bit.. down to 85, 84, 83.. and finally, he changes lanes into the middle lane and zooms off.

I do notice I get tailgated every now and then - perhaps as I'm a P-plater, or just by coincidence. When I do:

  • I check to make sure I'm going at the correct and max speed limit (eg if it's 90, I'll be going at 90). All good.
  • I'm usually in the left-hand lane by default. If it's a single-lane road, I'll try to pull over as soon as I can (eg into a small side street) and just let the person pass.
  • Otherwise, if it's a single-lane road and I can't pull over anywhere yet (or I don't feel like it sometimes!), then I'll just hold strong and keep going as I am. Same for if I'm driving on a multi-lane road and the tailgating car has clear opportunity to overtake, but chooses to continue riding up behind me instead. I refuse to be intimidated by people driving up riiiight behind me as if they can just will me to speed for them (at least, I refuse to be outwardly intimidated by it).
  • I almost never tap my breaks as I've heard it can incite road rage or whatever.. but in last night's situation, it was just so ridiculous and unsafe I felt that I had to do something, and it eventually worked.

So my question to all tailgaters is - what do you want from us?
Is it a game to see if you can intimidate other drivers? (in my situation above, I can honestly not think of a single other reason. Open to any opinions though!) Or is it that you just want others to go over the speed limit too? Or.. when you have an avenue of overtaking available.. why would you not take it? And if you don't have such an avenue, but the car in front IS doing the speed limit - do you expect us to break the law because you're in a rush / late for your meeting / etc? Are car's odometers just calibrated SO differently? (I have a digital one).

And to others who deal with tailgaters regularly - Beyond what I've already mentioned, do you have any additional tips or techniques or advice in how to further deal with the issue, for a fairly new driver? What's your approach, and your experiences?

TL;DR: Why do you tailgate? How do you stop others doing it to you, even if you're going at the limit etc?

Thanks in advance.

  • New situation: Today, on the same motorway, this time a truck was tailing me. As usual I was in the left, but this time it was daytime and slow traffic (70km/hr instead of 90). I had a 2-3s gap in front of me. And this truck was RIGHT up my ass. As close as he would normally be if we were totally stopped in traffic. I know I said I'd try slowing down… but I was too terrified this time. Kept driving and ignored him.

WHAT DO YOU WANT MR TRUCK. Just overtake me if you're in a hurry. Oh wait the other lane is just as slow.

Just cruise control on 75km/h- 80km/h [best if you're around 78km/h in case of speed cameras] and chill :)
I usually don't give a crap about the people behind me. If they see heavy traffic ahead of you, they should back off. That's why I don't like driving behind massive trucks or 4WDs, I can't see the traffic conditions through their back and front windows if it's a bigger car that obstructs my view. In this case I tend to leave more gap.

Honestly I don't care too much about tailgaters, I'm not a granny driver, but I'm no hoon. Most I'll speed is 10km+ on the M4 - because the old speed limit was 90km/h :(
Seriously not sure what they're getting out of reducing the speed limit when the roadworks people are protected by huge concrete barriers.. Unless the M4 lanes are closed off, it seems like the pre-westconnex lanes for driving are exactly the same as current reduce-your-speed-we-have-"roadworks" lanes

Cruise control is the best alternative to playing yoyo with your speedo in front of the speed cameras.
I also find it's a bit safer since my speeds on the highway/normal roads (50km/h, my car can do CruiseControl down to 40km/h), as during light traffic my speed is controlled by my fingers and my foot is always hovering on the brake (so if an emergency situation happens, my foot doesn't need to switch from Accelerator to Brake)
Most Cruise control systems disable themselves once you tap the brakes.

Seriously folks. If you are tailgating you are a Dick! No excuses! Your driver's licence is not an invitation to intimidate others because they dont drive fast enough for you. If the speed sign says 90, drive at 90 or just below, anyone doing physics calculations to determine the offset due to a geostationary GPS satellite is seriously overthinking the situation. Match up the big red and white sign with the needle on your speedo and chill out FFS!

If someone else hasn't yet cottoned onto your amazing wheels, your blistering handling skills or your cool style then maybe dont take it so personally. Slow down and switch the radio over to Smooth FM. The cops arent 'out to get you', there arent legions of pensioners lying in wait for you to knock off work. If you are perennially stressed by other drivers enough to have to dangerously tailgate people then maybe you should look inwards for the source of the problem….and eventually for the solution. Think about what is at risk here. If you are ever tempted to tailgate or road-rage someone ask yourself how would you explain your rage and ensuing behavior to the mum, dad, spouse, partner or kids of the person you kill over some overbaked macho BS.

I think people are taught poorly about leaving a gap here. We're so used to tailgating in peak traffic that it seems like people drive like that normally nowadays.
Most don't realise that at less than 1.5s of gap, any sudden braking will pretty much result in a crash.

After driving on the Autobahn in Germany last month at speeds ranging from 150 to 230kmh/h it's pretty obvious they have way better awareness over there.
They almost ALWAYS keep the fast lane free when its normal traffic. It seems so ingrained into their driving
When I'm in the fast lane going around 180 or more cars in front would pull to the other lane at least 500m ahead of me

Other thing is they usually leave a decent gap because the consequences of crashing a bit more dire at these speeds.
I notice though that at 160+ you become more vigilant when driving but down at 110 it feels like a casual drive and my eyes get a bit droopy lol

The similar incident happened with me on M4 Sydney on Monday around 7pm. I was driving in right most lane at 104 in 100 zone. I had my partner and kids with me. Suddenly Toyota Tarago starter tailgating me. I kept my nerves and did not give him way because 1) I was already above the speed limit by 4km/hour 2) Both lanes on left were empty so he could easily go there to overtake my car.

To add fuel to the injury,he turned on his high beam and continuously switched between low and high beam for around 1 minute. I was so pissed off that I reduced my speed gradually to 50km/hour and this idiot then swtiched to left lane eventually.

I wanted to chase him and give him the flavour of his medicine but I was with family so didn`t take risk.

I don`t understand why some drivers think that they owe the road and they could put other people life in danger. I wish he loses his licence for good.

    Rant finished

      One Question

Why are you in the right most lane if the other lanes are empty?

You must keep left if the speed limit is above 80km/h, unless you are overtaking or if the other lanes are congested.
