Nearly certain it is the WD My Passport Essential SE 750gb
Has the exact same specs, size and weight

    • in that case u would say that the 1tb is a wd aswell which makes it pretty good

Avoid Mystery Brand stuff when you can buy something named.
After-all you want to keep that data your storing right?!

30-Day warranty = 2nd hand, refurb or grey stock!!!

12 month warranty and 30 day full money back guarantee.

      • Was about to say that.

    Pity it isn't USB3

    • +1

out of curiosity, do you have a computer that can take usb3?

      • What IS usb 3?? Haven't seen it yet.

  • Not good value when u consider that you can get 500GB for $95 from MSY

    • +3

not comparable.. 500Gb is the sweet spot, sure, but 750Gb and 1Tb in one package is in a totally different ballpark for pricing..

      • It would be similar saying I can get a 17" LCD for cheaper and get 2 which equals 34" for cheaper then a one 34" computer monitor.

        • 34' diagonal != 2 * 17' diagonal.
Also, there would be a screwed up aspect ratio.

  • 750gb is too big for me. I don't understand why people need to carry 750gb data with them. IMO it's better to get a 2.5inch 320gb for portable and a 1TB or even 500gb 3.5inch for backup.

    • ild rather get a 750gb 2.5inch portable for this price lol

    • +2

well back in the day people said 32mb of RAM was enough for computers…

  • No issues with Wii USB loaders if anyone's wondering. Considering getting one as my 320gb is 90% full :P

  • Why mystery brand? That's retarded

    • It's a WD My Passport Essential as swimmingtoad has mentioned above.

  • agreed with Beaker its retarded and for that prices its hardly a bargain,,

Show us a better priced 2.5" 750 and 1Tb drive then.

  • WD's "My Passport Essential SE" drives with "SmartWare" don't seem to be mass storage device class (USB MSC/UMS) type. They seem to be SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) type requiring installation of a driver.

    • probs not the SE moedel then, just the regular

      • My point is that these drives are not plug'n'play until SES driver is installed - Microsoft don't include SES driver in Windows by default.
The issue with these drives is not SmartWare nor less than 1GB partition (not a big deal when talking about 500GB) with the software but rather them being SES in first place.
I predict a lot of confused bargain hunters rearing their heads.

  • Just a word of caution with the new WD drives…

The people at Western Digital have put a NON-REMOVABLE ~800MB partition loaded with their stupid "SmartWare" on all their new drives.

There're some major uproar on the interweb with people getting rather pi@ssed off at WD and returning their drives in masses.
I'm about to return the 2 two I just bought recently.

  • 2.5" External HDD

    $89, for 500G (0.178 per GB)
    $119, for 640G (0.186 per GB)
    $149, for 750G (0.198 per GB)
    $219, for 1TB (0.219 per GB)

    • oh wow, so its cheaper to get the smaller models.

  • I just returned one of these to Harvey Norman yesterday (it was two weeks old). These drives are very finicky with the connection (go read Amazon reviews to confirm this). They use micro USB and mine would only boot once every twenty or thirty tries (no joke). I would have to sit there and play around with the cable where it was connected to the drive. Most of the time the only way to get it to boot was to hold the drive upside down in the air. I ended up getting HN to price match DSE and got the WD Elements 500GB drive for $99. It is definitely slower than the essentials drive, and not as 'pretty', but at least it is reliable and has no SmartWare.
