Nutri Ninja Auto IQ - Putrid Smell and Gunk in O-Ring Seal - Have You Sniffed Yours Today?

Bought one from the last popular deal and lately I've noticed this terrible smell from the lid of our nutri ninja blender lid.

Carefully picked the rubber seal/gasket out and the smell was unleashed upon the entire kitchen like a thousand dead cockroaches. Heaps of mould, vege/fruit fibres, gunk and general shite got dislodged and I had to soak and disinfect the whole thing till it was actually bearable to handle without pinching my nose.

Looking at the design in retrospect, it's a really silly one. If you can't get to the seal to clean it then IMO it's a bloody health hazard and this blender is not fit for purpose - if it can't make a juice without smelling like death.

We have been using it on a daily basis over the last 4 mths and even if Nutri ninja DID provide (which they don't) a brush small enough to get into the threads of the lid, this is still a design flaw as the gasket itself is about 10mm in depth and this is heaps of surface area for gunk to get trapped in and start to decompose.

Did a big of googling and found only a handful of people on amazon with this same issue. I'm wondering if any of us ozbargainers have experienced this, how you have been cleaning your blender blade lid, or if you have any solution to this?

Also on a side note our blade has begun to develop very minute rust spots right at the bottom and I'm currently trying to get it replaced by the company. Closely inspecting the blade was what drew me to the smell… If you guys are trying to do the sniff test please watch where the blades go, you don't want them in your eye/nose.

  • 10mm depth gasket… sounds like a job for the humble toothbrush.

The bad smell is from bacteria that is growing. Kill off the odor-causing bacteria by soaking in acid — white vinegar being the cheapest option.

The smell is extracted nutrients…what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger! RAWR!!! :)

"Extract Hidden Nutrients" - from their website.

I still think you are better off eating the fruit as a whole. By blending you are consuming more and therefore more calories at one time as you don't get the full feeling as you would from eating whole fruits.

OP - Everyday for 4 months? How do you have the patience?

  • LOL added nutrients… Yum…

We don't mind doing it everyday as we otherwise wouldn't be eating all those fruits and veges.

It's very unlikely that you had any sort of nutitional deficiency when you didn't own a blender.

  • Surely someone's lid is smelling by now…

  • So, let's see if I've got this straight… after four months of using your blender, without cleaning under the gasket, you discovered you haven't been cleaning under the gasket. And when you finally took the gasket out to clean it… shock, horror… you discovered it wasn't clean. Sorry to sound like a troll, but don't you think there's a very obvious reason why only a handful of people have the same problem as you? Clue… cleaning stuff regularly is actually a thing. However - "Have you sniffed yours today?" is a fantastic turn of phrase that deserves to be used on a daily basis, in almost any social or professional setting. For this brilliant contribution, you deserve to be immortalized…

  • Well just as an update, after picking at the seal daily and cleaning it, the seal is now starting to split and of course there are no spare parts available for it. Got the electrolux from the other deal, hopefully that will last us longer than the ninja.

  • YES!! Mine stinks like crazy. I've only had it for a month or so and just noticed the smell yesterday. Unbearable. Not sure what to do - going to try the soaking in vinegar that was suggested

That won't help. You will need to pick the seal out like I've described in my original post, and physically wash all the gunk off and out.

  • Sorry to necromance but thanks for the post OP. My ninja autoiq started to smell recently and I googled and found this post..

Was shocked to find a stained gasket when I pulled it out.

Agree 100% on the design flaw. Surely we can’t be the only ones who’ve experienced this?

I used to just stick a nylon brush and scrub and that worked but something must’ve changed to cause food to get trapped inside.
    considering retiring the ninja now…

  • Haha I'm glad this post is helping 4 years on. Yeah junk it and buy something else!
