    How about Blu-ray?

    • The catalogue specifically says DVD. I don't have any details of whether Woolworths will stock the product on Blu-ray.

  • +14

    DVD? Is that like vhs? ::P

    • +1

      A bit better … :p

    • +9

      the farce is strong with this one..

    • +1

      Better, you don't have to rewind.

      • +2

        NOW you tell me! I've been playing my rental DVDs in reverse after I watch them all this time to avoid rewind fees. I thought they were worse than VHS because they took longer to rewind and stuttered.

  • +7

    I'd prefer Blu-Ray though :P

  • +2

    To clarify, $20 upfront $10 back is net $10

    • Thanks for clearing that up. But I still don't know how much it will cost…. ;)

      • My bad, i was asking for someone to clarify

        • +1

          The final effective price for the DVD is $10, providing you are a Woolworths rewards member and make regular purchases from Woolworths.

        • @pointscrazy: so I pay $20 for effectively a movie thats worth $10…. thought this was ozbargains.

        • @pointscrazy:

          Good price, will probably end up spending the other $10 on an actual DVD player :)

    • Wow. That's… that's mind blowing.

    • +1

      You math good

      • +1

        Math good I am.

    • +2

      Wait… Give me a minute…
      scribbles on some paper

      Yep, that maths checks out

      • Excel keeps giving me a Div/0 error…

  • +5

    I hope it applies to Bluray

    • +1

      DVD only I'd say.

      • Can I force them to offer me Blu-ray?

        • Chances are that the barcode for DVD and BR would be different, and the offer would only be tied to the DVD product barcode. They wouldn't be able to do much with the BR if it scans at full price.

        • +11

          That's not how the Force works

        • +4

          @ode1: You WILL offer me Blu-ray.

  • You had me at the Force.

  • +4

    Any idea if they'll have a similar offer for Caravan of Courage or The Battle For Endor?

    • +1

      It will be remastered in a triple pack with the Star Wars Holiday Special!

  • +7

    DVDs were first launched in 1996. How many more decades do we have to put up with them?!

    • +2

      The jump from DVD to Blu ray wasn't as popular as the jump from VHS to Blu ray :)

      • +2

        Yeah, digital followed a little too closely after bluray which is why bluray fell behind adoption. Still, anything that isn't HD should be destroyed

      • +1

        Which is real unfortunate considering the quality jump is the same as VHS to DVD. I absolutely cannot sit an watch a DVD anymore and haven't been able to since about 2007.

        • I can kind of watch DVDs unless there's subtitles. OMG I CAN'T READ ANYMORE!

    • +1

      As long as people who are satisfied with DVD keep buying them.

      • -4

        Those people are old and blind

        • I almost didn't see your post…

    • +1

      The jump from VHS to DVD brought:
      * Increased picture quality
      * Increased audio quality
      * Additional audio channels (e.g. 5.1)
      * Non-linear navigation (Menus)
      * Chapters
      * No need to rewind
      * Multiple audio tracks
      * Toggle-able subtitle tracks
      * Optical storage (previously magnetic)
      * Digital data format (previously analogue)
      * Smaller form factor
      * DRM :(

      The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray brought:
      * Increased picture quality
      * Increased audio quality
      * Additional audio channels(?)
      * Additional DRM :( :(

      I appreciate the difference in quality, but I can understand why there is less motivation to upgrade this time around.

        May be people don't have a big screen TV …

  • +13

    This isn't the disc format I am looking for.

  • +1

    This deal was live when I was in Warringah Mall store at 6pm on Monday.
    The $10 Woolworths Dollars offer only applied to DVD.
    Blu-Ray was priced at $25.

  • +2

    Wonder if I can buy the DVD then pay $5 to exchange for Bluray

    • Make sure the staff don't scan your Woolworths Reward card when you do the exchange and refund.

  • This is not the digital format you are looking for, he can go about his business. Move along.

  • Earn $10 WWD for WR Members

    Can this be done with a temporary WR card, the paper ones in the leaflets they have in store? I am pretty sure the reward can be accumulated, but can you redeem the reward without signing up?

    • I don't think you can redeem rewards on the temporary cards but I suggest you check the terms and conditions first.

      Sorry about the abbreviations in the title. I was running out of room and had to fit things in with the posting size limit.

      • Thanks. I just found the result online, the leaflets don't say anything much. "You can earn Woolworths Dollars using a temporary card, so you're building your balance from day one. However, you can't redeem your money off or get access to any other member benefits."

  • Does anyone know if I can use my old Woolwoths everyday rewards to make Woolworths dollars?

    • yes

      • Staff told me no during the free voda smart phone deal…

    • Everyday rewards cards and the Woolworth rewards cards have the same barcode

  • Man I am glad I got the HD version for 6.89 from the dendy deal otherwise I might have snagged this.

  • -3

    I'd consider getting this if they paid me $10

    I see the 'Bluray Hipster' crowd is out in Force today. First thanks to the OP for the deal, second some interesting stats from Roy Morgan - to the end of 2014, Australian households owned
    - DVD = 60%
    - VCR = 25%
    - Bluray = 23%

    So yep, less than two years ago more households had a VCR than a Bluray, whilst DVD players were more than twice as common as Bluray. So how about we drop the anti-DVD crap that seems to appear every time a DVD-only deal is posted?

    Source: http://www.roymorgan.com/findings/6250-obsolete-technology-n…

    • Selective quoting? That 60% figure is on a downward run, whereas the 23% is on the up. Add to that, it's a matter of ownership. Sure, a household could have a DVD player, doesn't mean they use it.

      Since the 2008 peak, over 800,000 homes got rid of (at least one) DVD player.

      Hey look, that 1 line makes my argument look better!

      • +1

        Sure a household could have a bluray player, doesn't mean they use it.

        Yes there's an upward trend, but given that the figures are from late 2014 it's extremely hard to imagine that bluray would be anywhere near as popular as DVD. Overtaken VCR? Probably, yet they'd still be very close.

        • -2

          The fact is, any comments are made in the context of this site, this selective population. OzBargainers use Eneloops rather than standard batteries, SSD over standard HDD. They're typically at the almost-forefront of technology (not the absolute forefront, coz that's expensive!). Comments made about Blu-Ray vs DVD are taken in the context of this site. No one is doubting that people still own dvd players, and buy dvds. A lot of mum and dad blu-ray player buyers probably don't even have hdmi etc (just generalising here).

          So less of the high horse and realise where the comments/jokes are made, and in which context.

        • +3

          @Spackbace: and do you have ANYTHING to back that up other than your opinion? Anything at all?

          I'm sure there are plenty of people here who like DVD and want to purchase them. Comments on a DVD-only deal of "DVD is crap I'd only buy this product on Bluray" are moronic. Who cares? You've added nothing to the discussion except for being a hipster and putting down people who enjoy DVD.

        • @Captain Obvious:

          Lol you do realise 'hipster' isn't the right term you're after right?

        • @Captain Obvious:

          Oh, I see, we've hit a personal note. Maybe the fact that your DVD posts didn't hit front page, are enough to tell you that this community will only buy DVD if it's cheap? Like $10 for a new release cheap?

        • @Spackbace: yep totally personal. I hijacked an independent research company's report from a few years ago. See I'm a time-traveler who only uses his powers to make a point on an Australian bargain forum.

          Also yes I'm using the term 'hipster' in it's correct context. Oh sorry, lol rofl lmfao etc etc.

        • +1

          @Spackbace: I am "at the almost-forefront of technology". I don't use Eneloops (because my high-tech gizmos don't need batteries). I don't use an SSD, because I have no need for its differences whatsoever, and I don't own a Blu-Ray player. (There's not really a sufficient increase in quality for me to be care, and its other "benefits" are, for me, actually drawbacks.)

          I will give you one bit of credit, for your remark about comments being made in the context of this site: if I was to buy a Blu-Ray player, it would almost certainly be solely to take advantage of deals on Blu-Ray discs, which it seems can often be bought for less than the price of the equivalent DVD… except never for movies or TV shows I actually want to watch.

          In the context of this user of this site, I'm not going to go out and buy an expensive piece of technology so I can spend more money to buy something on Blu-Ray when the "benefits" of Blu-Ray are not benefits for me. Because I come to this site for bargains, not just to learn how I can buy things I don't want for less than their RRP.

        • +1

          I am "at the almost-forefront of technology"

          I am not?…

          There's not really a sufficient increase in quality for me to be care

          Then your comments should be taken with the validity they deserve.

        • @Spackbace:

          I've never owned a device capable of playing blu-rays, and can only play dvds via consoles or computers. I've also never owned SSDs, and the only devices I own which use normal batteries are remotes.

          It seems you like to assume that everyone on this site is exactly like you.

        • @terminal2k:

          It seems you like to assume that everyone on this site is exactly like you.

          On the contrary, I have about 12 Eneloop batteries, and I still haven't picked up an SSD. I'm basing my comments on the upvoted deals, the front page deals etc to form a general population. As per the stats for February, highest search alert was 'eneloop', with 'wii u', 'xbox one', 'ps4' and 'chromecast' all within the top 10. Not difficult to paint the picture of the 'average' OzBargainer based on the stats available.

        • @Spackbace:

          lol, true ozbargainers read every deal as its posted, so have no reason to search. I only ever search to see the most recent pizza or deliveryhero deal when I decide I can't be stuffed to cook.

        • @terminal2k:

          lol, true ozbargainers read every deal as its posted, so have no reason to search.

          This is also true :P Search alerts are just set up when people want to be notified that a deal was posted for that item, that's all :)

        • @ajwatts:

          I have to ask, what benefits of Blu-ray are drawbacks to you?

        • @Captain Obvious:

          Comments on a DVD-only deal of "DVD is crap I'd only buy this product on Bluray" are moronic.

          Agreed. I read those same comments as a very solid expression of interest for the position of Village Idiot. Tough call though, there seems to be no shortage of applicants on OzB! ;)

    • Surprised by those stats as so many would have all three. How many households must have none to balance. So, did they count Play stations?

    • Do those stats include all the laptops, desktops and game consoles that have a bluray player built in? I'm betting not.

      • Yes, because built-in blu-ray is SO much more common than built-in DVD…

        • +1

          In this day and age they're just as common or as uncommon add each other in computers, especially since many people are also buying 2 in 1 laptops, ultra portables, etc that don't even have either, and those buying desktops and gaming or high end laptops are also going for a bluray player instead of a DVD player considering how cheap they are now.

    • -1

      Stats from 2014 are useless.
      Also 'Blu-ray Hipster'? lol

  • +1

    DVD only? I'm having a Darth Vader moment: https://youtu.be/WWaLxFIVX1s

  • I think I saw the DVD at Target for $18 and Blu-ray for $25

  • Shame, my two local woolies don't have it. Will have to try the city next. I prefer Blu-ray but this price is too good to pass up, because honestly it's not a huge difference between the two formats.

    • +1

      not a huge difference between the two formats.

      You're an 8-bit guy in a 32-bit world.

  • +1

    Don't know why anyone would buy the single disc bare bones DVD. The only way to experience this movie is to get the 2 disc blu-ray with all the extras for not much more.

    $25 for the DVD at Coles and Sanity.

    • to use for frisbees?

      what are the extras? comparisons of how much of the story they copied from old star wars? explanations of why the main characters sucked so much? apologies from JJ for screwing up two sci-fi franchises?
