Still waiting to Apple Pay to approve Bank issued AMEX cards =/

    • +3

It's the banks holding them back, not Apple

    • +1

It's banks that offer/issue the cards and so it just be them that offer Apple Pay, not Amex

    • +7

Nope. The truth is both Apple and the banks are responsible for the holdup.

Apple predominantly for wanting to take an unnecessary profit via a significant cut of the interchange fee (reportedly 15bps) for "grafting" on to a service that runs on the current payment network-financial institutions topology (which Apple paid nothing to establish).

The banks for holding up advancement of technology. And for not sharing some of its profits to Apple to further market Apple products.

The banks are also dragging their feet with Android Pay, likely to protect their customer spend data that they can use to market their banks' own services.

In the banks defence, Apple wants the cake and eat it. Apple makes the US/UK banks pay for marketing Apple Pay.

If Apple model prevails, ie banks have to give Apple/Google/Samsung/whovever a portion of their profits, guess from whom the banks will claw back this "profit loss"? Us, the poor schmucks. And not just those using Apple Pay, everyone gets slugged, particularly non Apple users. More profit for the banks with the pretext of keeping one user group happy.

Unless Apple agrees not to profit from Apple Pay (is that possible?), then there will be quite a wait for an Australian bank based deployment.

Great post. Also, contactless card payments are much more prevalent here than in the US. Ultimately you could simply sellotape your paywave card to the back of your phone, and you would have most of the same functionality.

Apple seem to presume that Aussie customers are clamouring so much for Apple pay that the banks will have to cave and give it to them. Unfortunately Australian banks are a cosy little oligopoly and have an ego to rival apple. Android pay will roll out earlier here, Apple have already climbed down sign ificantly from their initial offer and will have to climb down further still.

I put blame on Apple on this.

        1) Apple have entered the Aust market thinking they can push people around on "the next big thing" like they did in the US. Different market, different dynamics, and Apple's arrogance means that they did not change tactics to suit and therefore failed.

        2) Apple are trying to extract the same fee % from Aust as the US. To be clear, it is % of the transaction, not % of the bank's fees. Aust banks receive a lot less in fees as a % of the transaction than US banks because of RBA regulations on merchant fees, and therefore understandably are very hesitant to pass what is pretty much double the % of their fees compared to US banks.

        3) Apple in the US are really pushing contactless payments. In Aust, the banks did all the heavy lifting with pushing contactless. All Apple are doing is shifting it to the phone. Again, the banks invested in contactless, and Apple still wants to have a cut of the fees.

I also disagree with banks holding up the advancement of technology. I have worked in different countries (including the US) and I have found Aust banks to be very good with technology. Look at the likes of CBA and Westpac who have been pushing their own mobile contactless solutions for a while now (Westpac admittedly imperfect given its reliance on Samsung phones). True they don't work on Apple, but again that is because Apple have restricted access to NFC so the banks cannot roll out their own solution.
Now that a viable and commercially acceptable alternative has popped up in Android Pay, look how many of the banks have jumped on board that one. True CBA and NAB have not, but then CBA has its own mobile solution for Android and NAB is about to release their own too - essentially anyone banking with any of the Big 4 plus a number of smaller banks will have mobile payments on their compatible Android phone soon. And Aust is scheduled to be either #2 or #3 launch jurisdiction as well.
I cannot honestly agree with you that the banks here are holding up technology. In my opinion, they have gone out of their way to promote it, and I am not going to hold the banks responsible for Apple's ham-fisted strategy to take the cream off the bank's past efforts and investments.

      • banks are rolling out android pay

the issue was that it took ages for android to get its shit together for a unified solution, meanwhile samsung paid out of pocket to make sure their proprietary implementation worked

Now the issue is that since the banks have tap and pay already implemented, android pay muddles things from an setup process. customers couldnt care less as tap and pay is the same

but from a bank perspective everyone wants to route customers back to their own native apps for authentication. its a security and branding issue

of course google would rather follow the simple apple pay route and just register straight through via their app

so the contention is would you rather increase adoption via simplified and unified android tap and pay registration at the risk of tremendous fraud like Apple pay or have a hassle of linking back to authenticate but risk drop offs in customer registration

Also people forget that apple pay literally allows credit card fraudsters to register a stolen card onto any iphone with no authentication that you own the card whatsoever. its a nightmare for fraud in the US

I was able to add my ANZ AMEX after the 9.3.1 update, then after using it a few times I got a message saying that ANZ removed the card, now I can't add it again… so I assume its imminent.

      • That's really good news. Did you try adding the Visa/MC as well?

        • I tried to add the Visa after the AMEX was removed, but it didn't work.

      • Wow I hope so! Can't wait to use my NAB Amex.

    • -3

I've been using my Note 3 to MC tap and go for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggeeeeeeesssssss now. Commbank. More recently they do Amex now.

  • Not for me either

I am using iPhone 5 and it doesn't support Apple Pay.. :(

    • I also have iPhone 5 (company issue). but I'm getting the Apple Watch soon which supports Apple Pay, but I can't find out if it will still work with the iPhone 5.

      • +1

It should do. I'm using an iPhone 5S with the Apple Watch. The 5S doesn't support Apple Pay but the Watch does and works fine. You just add the card in the watch app, rather than in the wallet app.

        • 5S doesn't support Apple Pay? I thought if there is a finger print reader it will support?

        • @wtfnodeal:

Apple pay requires an NFC chip installed in the device which the 5S does not have.

    • +9

Stick your AmEx card to the back of your phone, or if you use a case, slip it inside. Works like magic! Make sure you've upgraded to the latest iOS version.

      • +3

What's more, it will even work when your battery is flat! How do those geniuses at Apple come up with this stuff?

    • You realise youre not missing much, right?

  • Not showing up on my iOS app or website login. Anyone has a direct link?

  • 3x10 get 10 back

  • nothing for me :(

  • Nuttin,

  • Got the 2nd offer

  • Nothing for me.

Wondering if OP and others who received the offer had their Amex card already set up in Apple Pay?

  • I've already setup and used Apple Pay numerous times, the offer I received was spend $20 get $5.
On the AMEX issued CA Platinum Edge.

  • Nothing for me. I have AMEX issued Platinum Edge

  • Just activated my offer and it is showing up when you sign in online on the AMEX webpage. Please take note it is only a one time credit of $5 for $20+ transaction

  • Spend $20 or more get $5 back - AMEX blue

  • I already have Apple Pay on my iPhone and Apple watch.Offer didn't appear in the transaction list, it appears under "offers" tab. Spend $20 get$5

  • 3x Spend $10 get $10. Thanks Ninja. Amex platinum. Don't use Apple Pay often, if that might make a difference?

  • +1

Example stores that accept Apple Pay, from th T&Cs: Big W, BWS,Dan Muphy's, Woolowoth's, David Jones, Domino's, Event cinemas, Harris farm Markets, Hoyts, Maccas.

    • +1

Basically anywhere that accepts amex already.

  • +1

    Thanks!

I got the Spend 3 x $10, get $10 back. I've been using apple pay since it launched!

  • +1

    3x10 10 for me.

Use Apple Pay all the time at Coles.

  • Nothing here, Velocity Platinum

  • Nothing for me though I've not set up Apple Pay until now.

  • Seems like those who have been using their Amex on Apple Pay or at least having it set up prior to this Offer would get it?
I have just set up mine after seeing this, so hopefully will be eligible when Amex "push" the next round of offers.

    • +1

It's purely random, I got it without having Apple pay setup on my iPhone. 5 back for 20

  • +2

Nothing for me either, Qantas Amex card. Have had the app installed for at least three months now and use it regularly… seems to be targeted/random?

  • Had nothing in mine when I scrolled down
But in offers I had spend $20 on Apple Pay and $5 back
    Better than nothing

  • Used it maybe 6 times before. Got the 3x$10 offer. Thanks!

  • 3x10 get 10 back

  • Spend 3 x $10, get $10 back

  • 3 x $10, get $10 back. One down already (Supabarn)

  • targeted offer, more likely for those who don't use Apple pay often

  • Thanks OP. Got the $5 offer. Got nothing in the scrolled down transaction list but found it the offers section in the top menu.

  • Waiting for the android apple pay app

    • lol!

    • Not sure if this trick works on Android, but you could try?

    • Yeah where is the Android Pay or Google Pay whatever they want to call it?

    • People loling at him don't know that Apple will one day eventually release Apple Pay to Android, like they did with Apple music. It's all about the money folks.

  • +1

I just logged into Amex and under offers available, I could save $5 apple pay to supplementary card as well.

  • Spend $20 or more get $5 back. Thanks OP!

  • Spend $20 get $5

  • didn't see it

  • Spend $20 get $5 back, Amex Qantas Discovery card

    • i have the same card but i had nothing :(

  • +1

You don't need to do three separate shops. You can select 'split payment' on the Coles & Woolies self check out terminals and select credit as an option three different times and then simply tap each time with the same card. Unless they've changed the split payment, you've been able to use multiple CCs.

    • I just did it easily at Woolies

  • spend $20 get $5 back.

  • Great deal. I've had my Qantas Discovery Card setup with Apple Pay for a few months and used it a few times. Unfortunately offer isn't showing up for me in Transactions or Offers in my iOS app. Just to be certain I'm following instructions correctly, would anyone mind uploading a screenshot of the the offer?

    • +1

Same Qantas and got no offer either. Wondering if Qantas card count towards the offer?

    • +1

Mine either. I use Apple Pay almost daily on my own card. I have a supplementary card on a different account which I use less often, and that one had the offer. Looks like they are targeting the offer to people who don't utilise Apple Pay as much.

  • Got 3x$10

  • 3x10 for 10

  • Got the first offer on my platinum edge but nothing on velocity platinum

  • Got 3*$10 for $10 back

  • +1

Likewise Qantas Discovery not working for me.

  • +1

I got spend $20 get $5.I use apple pay all the time in woolworths so this will be easy!

    Thanks OP!

  • Spent and got an email from Amex;

Thank you for using Amex Offers with your Card ending xxxxx loaded to Apple Pay. If your purchase meets the offer terms, you will receive a $5.00 credit. Credits usually take 5 days to appear on your account upon completion of your qualifying transaction, but may take up to 90 days after the offer has ended.

  • Don't have on mine, velocity FF

  • Is it only for iphone 6?
I have iphone 5 + Amex own Platinum Edge card
    Not working…

    • yep, iphone6 or newer

  • Got 3 spends and $10 back offer.
Pretty good as I use Apple Pay frequently already.
One less card to squeeze in wallet and paying with Apple Watch is so convenient.
    Laziness to the max!

  • Nothing. :( I have a David Jones Platinum AMEX and have used ApplePay daily since the first day it launched. All I can see are offers for Webjet Hotels, Powershop, and Ecruising.

    • Same. I think they are targeting accounts which do not utilise Apple Pay as much as we do.

  • Amex Plat Charge: $20 get $5
    Amex Plat Edge: nothing

Both cards have been enabled for Apple Pay since day 1

  • Who is to blame for a merchant's terminal not accepting Amex contactless/ExpressPay payments but instead errors out and asks you to insert it for Chip/PIN payment?

The merchants in question obviously do accept Amex.

    • +2

Report thwm to takeamex.com.au so Amex can take a look - could just be a firmware update, or even hardware replacement

    • I have got the same problem today at woollies

      • I've never had an issue at Woolworths

        • It's actually my first time using apply pay.
I just open wallet and put my finger on the Touch ID then put the phone on terminal. Tried few times still nothing so give up

        • @edw0000000: Did your card work for contactless? Follow the "instructions" for using Apple Pay?

        • @cooni: I think so, I did use them to buy the dam murrphy card before

        • @cooni: All I did is add the amex card to the wallet, is that correct?
btw I am using iPhone 6.

        • @cooni: works now! After I remove my phone case :) thanks

  • Got nothing on Qantas Premium AMEX and Platinum Edge.

  • Do you have to call amex to get apple pay activated?
