    http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_y635-7076.php

Some more info about the phone for those of you that want it.

    • +2

That link says 4GB flash, which would be a big problem when installing apps.
If it really is 8GB for the Optus model, it would be great value.

      • +5

Can confirm definitely 8GB, gsmarena have listed the wrong specs

    • Talking about specs, does anyone know what version of Android it ships with?

      http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/hua…

This review says Android 5.0, but it's obviously a different variant of the Y635 he's reviewing as his phone only has 4GB internal.

  • +12

    5" at 854 x 480 is kind of pokey

    • I used to have the Y635, recently replaced with the Sony C4 thanks to Ozbargain :) The Y635 IPS display was pretty good, IMO slightly better than the display in the ZTE Fit but nowhere near the Sony, the screen on the C4 kicks a$$!

      • lets not get into FHD because thats another universe compared to 480p but since 720p phones are sometimes possible for around $100… once you use 720p its hard to go less

        • +2

Didn't think it was possible to get an android 720p phone for $l00 locally, are you talking about grey imports?

        • IMO
          5" 480p IPS > 4.5" 720p TN

      • +1

Yes, but how much was the Sony C4? I think it is an very different price range. $69 is even $20 less than the best the Sony E4G has been.

  • Nice price for a 5 inch phone with ips screen and 4g, as long as you can live with the low resolution. :)

    • And low RAM.
      And low storage.

      CPU surprisingly good but.

      • +4

1 GB is perfectly usable for most day-to-day uses. Most phones have less at this price point.

8GB storage should is also be fine if indeed usable for apps.

  • It sounds very similar to the popular G526.

    • +8

Y550 actually, same CPU, RAM, Resolutions. However this one is 5" instead of 4.5".

      • +1

It also has the 700 band plus 8gb of storage. From memory the y550 only had ~1.6gb left for apps out of the box, where this should be closer to 5gb.

  • +5

I prefer the LG Leon over this one. Supports 4G 2300MHz as well, ans also supports 3G 850MHz so good to use with Boost/Telstra as well after unlocking…

    • +3

Yeah, surprised that there wasnt more love for the Leon when it was $69 recently. I have one from when they were $99 and I can't fault it too much. The skin it comes with is a bit annoying but thats a minor quibble. Also the Android controls take up screen on the Leon whereas with the Huawei they have dedicated keys at the bottom of the screen, which I prefer.

this is definitely a good deal as well. Main issue with the cheap Huaweis is the 4gb of onboard storage and this has 8gb, so I wouldnt say one is better than the other.

      • My partner stop using hers (that she got for 50% off a Big W) because the 8GB storage is unusable.

        • +1

What do you mean unusable? If you mean she filled it up with data, why not use a memory card?

        • @Major Mess:

Apps. No point having a smartphone if you can install next to no apps.

        • +5

          @PainToad:

How much storage does it have left for apps? 8gb phones usually have around 5gb space left for apps. Most apps are less than 50mb, so still room for around 100 apps? How many apps do you use?

        • @Ronnnie: you will experience extreme slowdowns as you fill that 5 gig up.

Also alot of the apps I use are 2-300mb.

        • If 8GB storage is insufficient, your only realistic option is to opt for a 16GB phone…which you're unlikely to find at this price point. You should look at older models like an S4 perhaps? Even that is unlikely to go below $200 (cheapest I've seen brand new S4s for during the recent eBay sale)

8GB on the Leon is much the same as 8GB on the Telstra Buzz that I have i.e. about 5GB free.

      • And Leon has 7.8h talk time, this only 3h…

That seems super short for the 2000mAh battery, and gsmarena lists it as 15h! An optus typo?

  • +3

Any idea on cost for unlocking these? (am i allowed to ask?)

    • +1

      $7 on ebay

  • 29 bucks(with 20 bucks playstore credits) alcatel is better and better

    • The $29 Alcatel is rubbish. That is the Pixi 3 (3G), not the much better Pixi 3 4.5 (4G) which is a much better phone as been often around for $35 and was once $29 with the Google credit.

      • I think the last deal I saw was the 4.5 for 29ans the 3 for 19, so op is referring to the same phone I expect

      • I bought the Pixi 3 (3G) for $19 at OfficeWorks to use until I got a replacement screen for my Nexus 4… I took the Pixi back a week later as it was annoyingly bad. So slow, it was painful (even scrolling the contact list was risky as you never knew the next swipe will register as a swipe or a tap). Not very good for phonecalls either - other party sounds distorted and they also complained about hearing me.

'Twas a cute phone though :)

    • Optus pixi 3 4.5 4G:
      3G 850 for Telstra

      Y635:
slightly more powerful CPU and GPU
      IPS screen
      BT4 LE (Low Energy)
      5" (but weighs 178g)
removeable battery (but batteries will cost about $40-$50)

Strangely, Optus lists both their talk-times as 3 hours - seems about 1/3 or 1/5 what it should be for 1780mAh and 2000mAh (and gsmarena lists them as 9h and 15h respectively).

  • Would something like this be OK to mount in the car as a dedicated Torque display?

I just want something cheap but easy enough to mount and not too small. :)

(Won't have a SIM card in it, I will update it via wifi only at home - or in the garage!)

    • I think a phone like this would be pretty good. My Huawei Y550 is a tough and reliable little phone (the display is good for the price). This will probably be similar.

      • Last time I bought Huawei Y550 to use in car but it has GPS issue.

        • Yes the Y550 only works reliably as a car GPS if the phone is plugged in and is charging. This fixed the problem for me.

  • +2

Have the Telstra version of this which is newer and runs Lollipop 5.1.1. Excellent basic phone with decent build quality, and I'd take EmotionUI anyday over TouchWiz. KitKat partially ruins it, its not even 4.4.4 and its already 2016. Yes the RAM and storage is cut back, but it runs Youporn SD and that is all that matters. Bottom line, Huawei is sexy.

    • +1

it runs Youporn SD and that is all that matters

way to say what we're all thinking…

    • Where did you get it from and how much?
Using Aldi for the kids and would like to avoid unlocking fees.

      • $103 before DSE died. RRP is now $129 which is at least $20 too much. Still would recommend it.

  • I like the number of the price…

  • I've had the Y550 for a while, great phone for the price, this one's very similar. My only complaint in these cheap phones is the horrible digitiser's they use, if you type fast, these things are a nightmare. But can't complain too much for the 49 I paid for my Y550.

Moving onto the iPhone 6S from my Y550 was a dream.

    • +1

I've had 2 Y550s, which I've now given away…they've got jaw-droppingly awesome battery life, but GPS was spotty…

      • +1

Yea I have to agree, the battery life was ridiculous. Huawei had some pretty incredible battery saving features baked in, as well as ram optimising stuff. Was very surprised myself.

One day when the digitiser's get better, the skins get removed and Android 6+ (full SD app installation support) is on these cheap phones, these cheap phones will be incredible value, stunning. That day is hopefully near!

  • The website link states "Phone is network locked to Optus. Unlocking fee applies."

Anyone know if iiNet, Virgin, Vaya and Amaysim sim cards will work?

Since they are all using the Optus network as well.

    • +2

Can't speak with complete authority, but recently bought a couple of Optus locked prepaid phones.
They work fine with Virgin (still locked to Optus).

      • Cool thanks buddy!

      • I know the Optus locked LG Leon works with Virgin.

Their the same company and same network, should be no problem.

  • Cyanogen Mod?

    • Highly unlikely.

  • Sold out at Danks St (Waterloo), and Crown St (Surry Hills)- by 8:30am

  • +1

So is it 4gigs or 8 gigs reviews i read say 4gigs.

    • +2

Optus site states 8GB storage (3.5 GB user available), 1GB RAM.

  • Lucky me bought one yesterday afternoon.

  • Got one in Mandurah, seems like a nice little upgrade from my g526, 8GB might not be much but it's a lot more than 4GB. They had none on display, had to ask at the counter.
