1 Free Pizza Per Day Per Customer at Hidden Pizza Restaurant, Fitzroy April 12-25 (VIC)

420

1 free pizza per day per customer (potentially 14 pizzas). You must call 1300 615 786 to order from April 12-25. Walk-ins won't be able to get the free pizza.

Their "hidden" location is 285 Brunswick St Fitzroy VIC or could be down the laneway on Johnston Street across the street from Coles. Figuring it's Melbourne, it probably is down the laneway.

This new pizza restaurant is trying to generate some online buzz. It looks like they will be using fresh ingredients including herbs grown in house.

  • Mmmm not bad at all lol =D

  • Nice freebie
Now I just need to find a free fly :)

oh it's on ozbargain, hope they have lots of startup capital… they'll need it.

  • hmm, if this goes viral I wonder how they will cope with demand?

  • Also the 1 per day is amusing. I wonder how they will be able to keep track of how many pizzas you personally have had that day, given the amount of pizzas/customers they will be up against.

I also note is doesn't say how small the pizzas are!

  • +1

Uh-oh! I'll book the OzBargain waaah-mbulance ahead of time. Forget Grill'd!

    • +1

Frankly, I am (pleasantly) shocked that no-one has yet complained about the 500-per-day limit.

  • +1

Excellent! Nice catch, Neil. I hope they are prepared for the OzBargain effect :)

  • Hidden Pizza? How will anyone find it? :-)

  • +1

    I call BS!

ozbargain will easily attract a few hundred people + normal people = say 1000 people per day

    say $5 per pizza = $5000 a day they lose x 3 = $15000 lol!

I bet they have a limit of like 50 to give away ad day or something lol! :P

    • +1

Plus given the location you can be sure it will attract a lot of passing traffic/attention. Permanent queue each night till closing time…

    • Except it's 14 days :)

  • "Call 1300 615 786 to order from April 12-25." Strange number to call a local pizza shop… Costs 25c for most people (rather than free as a local call on many home plans). Guess thats the Telstra/Sensis cut.

So I wonder do you -have- to call/order beforehand or can you just order in person at the store?
Us: "One free pizza please" Them: "It will be ready for pickup in 5 hours…" ;-)

  • I'll be in it if they deliver free of charge too ;)

  • Sweet 5 mins walk from my Uni. I know where I'm having lunch on Monday/Wed/Thu. :)

    • Don't think they are open for lunch (if the timings are right on the Yellow Pages site)

  • Doh :(

  • +1

I wonder who will be the first person to find the addrress of this pizza resteraunt and publish the address.

  • +3

This shall be good for all the homeless people of Melbourne

    • Somebody need to print off the address and give them to homeless people since they don't have Internet access.

  • "Look us up the way you would any other business"

Given the above quote, and the site's hosting, does anyone else thinks it's either a viral marketing tactic for, or at least partially funded by Yellow Pages?

    Either way, it sounds awesome.

    • That and the domain registration contact is [email protected], Telstra of course, being the owners of Yellow Pages

  • The prawn one sounds delicious!

  • This is a Yellow Pages publicity stunt. I'm sure there will be free pizza though…

  • can anyone confirm the location? lol
edit: tried calling and it had an auto msg saying to call back at 5:30 for the address

    • In the meantime Telstra/Sensis rack up the call profits for the 1300 number…

  • Just come back from Hidden Pizza, interesting place, was one of first there! You call up and an automated message answers (just press 2 to skip the talking bit) then it lists the whole menu including ingredients(wasting your time and earning your money)then you press 3(mine stuffed up here and I had to call again) and get put on hold until someone real answers and takes your order (whole call took me 8 mins). You get sent a txt and you can go anytime, they make it when you get there supposedly (dunno what happens if you call with a landline). I had a prawn pizza, was pretty nice, also had free lemonade in a jar too, place is decked out with a wall of yellow pages and is underground.

    • What's the address? And what happens to people who just walk in off the street?

EDIT: found this on hidden pizza's website:

Finding the restaurant is easy, just look it up the way you would any other business from April 12 – April 25 and the pizzas are free. Make sure you phone ahead to order as no pizza orders are taken at the door.

Wonder what happens after the two weeks are up?

  • Just found this comment:

"Update 12 April 2010: the whole marketing campaign is a trick. You have to call the 1300 number and get an order number to get in – the order no is your ticket. The web text saying ‘if you find us (deliberately vague and misleading) … you’ll get a free pizza’ is deceptive and unethical. Don’t bother turning up without doing this. I told them exactly what I thought about this annoying trick when I got there. They got nervous when I said ‘potential breach of the trade practices act’ and offered to let me in anywhay but I refused."

    Found at http://indolentdandy.net/fitzroyalty/2010/04/09/these-look-f…

So it seems you can't just walk in and order? Can anyone please confirm?

  • Nah - you have to call and order. Saw people turn up and be told they needed to call. They called from their mobile. Pizza worth it.

  • It specifically says on both the yellow pages page and hiddenpizza.com.au that customers should call before rocking up. How are so many people having trouble with this?

    • Other pizza places also "suggest" calling before you order, but also allow in-store ordering. What wasn't made clear was the fact that you can ONLY order over the phone, and NOT in store.

Whats more interesting is whether the 'phone only order' system will continue once the two weeks are up?

    • So can people call from a landline to save call costs (somewhat)?
Do you have to have a mobile (to receive a text to show) or do they just tell you your number (so you can write it down and show them)?

  • Got there by 8pm (got my so-called order number by calling the 1300 number before leaving the house) and there was a queue of about 20 people. Took 10 minutes to get to the counter where I was given a card with my name and order on it. Entered the 'actual' warehouse converted restaurant and it took me another 10-12 minutes to get my pizza.

Lots of filming and photo shoots going on inside! The pizza was decent enough.

    • Very cool, may wait a couple of days until things die down.

      How big are the pizzas?

      • About 10 inches I reckon. Generous toppings…enough for one person…

  • is anyone able to get thru to them?? i am getting engaged tone all the time. did they give up already?

  • Went tonight. Ordered via landline (you can do this but they ask for a phone number anyway as they use this for verification when you arrive). Don't use a mobile to place order unless you can afford the wait/cost 8+mins for human answer (A restaurant would go broke if they took that long to answer).

Big queue (about 30 or so in front, later 200 behind!) down the alley and out to the street. They asked people to sign a waiver (to cover any photos) while in queue. Bouncers were there to strut their testosterone. After 30+mins got to front of queue (lucky I was killing time and happened to be visiting the neighbourhood). Got ticket, proceeded downstairs to actual venue to handover ticket and wait for pizza. Got a little jar one third full of free lemonade. Music was too loud so it was hard to hear when they called your name out. Pizzas came out of only one oven (~10+ mins wait). Could eat there or take away (didn't make a difference as they were all served on a cardboard tray in paper bag. Exit out the back so people can't ask you questions/see if the pizza is worth the wait ;-)

Was about 7-8inches I thought (Maybe they are making them smaller?). Much smaller than carboard tray they come on. Between a small to medium size. One person's meal cut into quarters. Tasted nice (I had Capricciosa) and it was on wholemeal pita type base.

Would I go again. Not on a similar night and only if I happened to be visiting Brunswick St (If it was on my way and I had time to waste). I walked past later in the evening and the queue was the same length…

Saw one Big Issue seller in there eating so maybe those in need are getting some (if they have a mobile phone!) Not sure how any of this all helps Yellow Pages sell more space or get used more but that's not our problem ;-)

  • just saw the video on the hiddenpizza.com.au site, ripped it to youtube for easier sharing
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRpISmw7-Xw

  • Apparently there's hidden cameras in store filming you (mentioned briefly/discreetly on the phone greeting)…and the store won't be there after the two weeks. And the "code" is apparently just your phone number (not a code sent to your phone as some others made it sound). Now I'm glad I didn't go - dont' really want my name/number on tape! Sounds like some kind of recruiting scheme…

    • +1 for the first link but I think the second while interesting might not be relevant here!

Of course for the advertising agency behind this and Sensis who want to believe we are going to use their services any more they are just fooling themselves. People just wanted free pizza and most knew it was just marketing for Yellow Pages - and couldn't care less. Funny thing is I'm sure most people used Google more to find the place/articles on it! ;-)

      • you're absolutely right if that's all it was, ie. it would be a total misconceived waste of money if it was simply a futile attempt to get people to use the Yellow pages.

But it's what they are going to do with all the footage/stills that comprise real faces against real contact numbers and the name of each participant that will be the real reason for the exercise (noted that the names provided could be fake … but not the numbers & visages). That's what whoever has footed the money behind this project really wanted and we'll have to wait & see to what use that information is put.

PS. yes, pls ignore that second link - it was from last night's Channel 9 program.
