  • Is this essentially a significantly more expensive Sodastream?

    • +3

you get to put upmarket fizz into your drinks… ;)

    • This is essentially a Sodastream with a Kitchenaid logo slapped on it. It uses the Sodastream CO2 refills and works with Sodastream bottles.

No, this is a kitchen aid sparking beverage maker, manufactured by Kitchenaid. Its only association to soda stream is the use of their bottles and flavors.

do they use a different carbonation?

Cos $240 to carbonate water it is a pretty steep.

  • You mean a Sodastream? No thanks…

    • +1

Sodastream with Kitchenaid body kit ;)

  • Really?

I paid like $60 for my Sodastream which also makes sparkling beverages

    • Yes but that is just some flimsy plastic.

The idea of a (presumably) far more sturdy unit is appealing. Still a massive price difference though.

At this price. You might as well buy a Co2 bottle, regulator and a carbonator cap and paint the bottle fire engine red. It works so much better I have been making soda water for over half a year and the refill costs the same as a sodastream.

Biggest problems with sodastream is that it released the pressure as soon as you let go of the button not giving the c02 time to dissolve into the water wasting gas. also when the gas bottle got lower then half full it would be a lot harder to get a consistent result. and the bottle get empty too fast and half the time the stores didn't have any refills in stock so you walk away form the counter with an empty gas bottle looking like an idiot.

With a homemade carbonator you can use any regular PET bottle set exact PSI you want on the regulator and carbonate juices without it going everywhere. I cannot understate how much better it is getting the exact same PSI every time without pressing a button and guessing, this Kitchenaid has a gauge but you still have to manually hit the PSI without overshooting. With the regulator you set the PSI before connecting the bottle and you shouldn't have to touch that setting again.

You can get all the parts you need from kegking.com.au

    • how does it dissolve into the water if it doesnt release into the water?

      • the c02 pressure in the neck forces the c02 you mixed into in the water to stay there longer. The longer you leave that pressure the less carbonation you lose from the water when you open the lid because it has had time to dissolve into the water and not bubble straight out.

The sodastream uses that little tube and the violent action of the co2 going into the bottle to stir up the water to mix the c02 in, but at least on the play it releases the pressure on the bottle straight away and you end up with a pretty mediocre result, if you can find some kind of Indiana Jones solution to hold the button down on the sodastream play for a minute or two to keep the pressure on the bottle you end up with a better result but its still finicky. Also the setup I switched to doesn't make obnoxious burping noises its almost silent which is great with apartment house mates on shiftwork.

It's not a solution for everybody It ends up costing around $250 but if you think you will be making sodawater everyday it will be a lot less of a frustrating experience and cheaper in the long run because the gas refils end up being so much cheaper. This is coming from somebody who has owned a sodastream genesis and sodastream play.

        • oh i see, the soda stream one doesnt form a seal around the hole in the bottle after u press the button

i went to keg king and they sell hoses and adapters. the popsci site requires alot of parts

technically dont u just need the gas bottle + hose + regulator + adapter for plastic bottle? so 4 parts?

also where do u get gas refills in australia? is industrial CO2 safe?

        • @furythree:It creates a sort-of-seal that instantly releases when you let go of the button.

Those keg king bottles you can refill at home-brew places Keg king list them here. Industrial is safe but I'm not sure the big gas places will refill the 2.6 or 6kg bottles. I got a 2.6kg just to be safe in case I got a leak I wouldn't fill my house with c02 and kill myself or waste a bunch of gas, But I all ways turn it off at the bottle when I'm done anyway.

You need some hose clamps and a ball joint connector to connect the hose to the bottle adaptor as well. But I'm looking now and it seems like Keg king are out of stock on the bottle connector at the moment but you can get it on ebay there is also a plastic version called "the Carbonator" on ebay, this is what I ordered.

Carbonation & Line Cleaning & Counter Pressure Filler Cap (this goes on the bottle)
          7346

Stainless Stepless Clamp - Suits 6-8mm OD Line
          RET0764

1/4 Inch Ball Valve with Check Valve
          7162

MKII Dual Gauge Multi Gas Regulator
          6325

Stainless Ball Lock Disconnect - Barb (Grey/Gas)
          7773

Food Grade Vinyl Tube 5mm ID x 8mm OD per metre
          6967

          CO2 Gas Cylinders 2.6kg (full)

They have a newer model regulator now, get a few extra hose clamps in case you make a mistake and some kind of tool to pinch the clamps and a wrench and you're golden.

        • @Mujaji: thanks, totally cracked up at the kill yourself with CO2 bit

Some one really needs to sell a preassembled kit
