      You can get Nikon 70-300G lens for about 150 (or so), but that does not have built in motor, so cannot auto focus with 3000 or 5000 series. If your camera body has built in motor, than I recommend buying the Nikon one, otherwise this might be a good option (for low budget)

      All Canon EF mount lenses have a built in focus motor, including this one.
      Not all Nikon F mount lenses have a built in focus motor & this is usually the most asked question from Nikon users, so it was included in the listing.

      Way back when I got my second Nikon DSLR I got the twin lens kit, and it came with the VR version of this lens. Was fine, although I did have some back focus issues that were very hard to address. Was not impressed with how Nikon dealt with it, and the lack of adjustment capability on the 'cheaper' bodies, and around the same time Sony came out with the A7, so I jumped ship. Very very happy with the decision.

      Anyhow, if you can live without VR (and at 300mm on an APS-C camera that makes it close to 450mm equivalent so expect some blur without a very fast shutter speed and/or a tripod and/or high ISO) this seems like a decent deal.

          Errr…. no…. I got a genuine Nikon twin lens kit with my Nikon camera. I can see the confusion though as I wasn't clearly answering the original question above - I indeed got the VR version of the Nikon lens. Not a Sigma lens. In SLR package deals they normally provide lenses that are the same brand as the camera body. I was trying to imply that in general most kit telephoto zoom lenses provided with cameras now include VR if the body doesn't provide that internally.

          So.

          Is this lens (the Sigma 70-300mm) similar to kit lenses provided with some cameras. Yes - in length, max aperture, and probably overall build & image quality. It is however not similar in that many kit telephoto zoom lenses for cameras (that do not provide this feature within the body) now include VR and this doesn't. In addition, most kit lenses are usually by the same manufacturer so unless you are buying a Sigma camera body it is more likely your kit lenses will be by the same manufacturer as the body you are also buying.

      The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II has been discontinued. You are better off with the replacement STM lens - the focusing is far superior.

      I'll see what I can do with the Sigma 18-250mm. I may be able to post something tomorrow.

    This looks great for the price, would the OZB hive-mind recommend this lens for macro photography? I know it's in the products name but it would be good to get some opinions.

      That depends on how seriously you're taking it. This is a $120 tele lens that does something approximating macro. I say approximating because most multi-purpose lenses that have 'macro' in the title aren't actually. Technically a macro lens is one that can do 1:1 reproduction or larger, whereas this one can only do 1:4.1 reproduction.

      If you just want to play around taking pics of some bugs while walking around then this will work.

      If you want to take it more seriously but don't want to spend hundreds or thousands on a dedicated lens, then get some extension tubes.

        This would be a companion lens for a camera with a canon EF-S 18-135mm lens, it sounds like this 70-300mm wouldn't take noticeably better macro pics. Do you recommend any extension tubes in particular?

          I've never bothered to use tubes as I don't do much macro. They are a pretty basic concept though - they just extend the mount point further away from the sensor so allow closer focussing.

          You can get ones without electrical contacts. These are cheap but won't allow you to autofocus or change the aperture on an EOS lens. Note that the new STM lenses are focus by wire - so you can't even focus them without electrical contacts. There is an STM version of the 18-135 so check if you have that.

          Otherwise, you can get ones with the contacts that will allow AF and aperture to work. Kenko is the reference brand for these.

          @macrocephalic: I've been looking for extension tubes myself, and I've heard that some of the cheaper brands have yielded better results over the name brands, so any advice?
          I'm only asking because I've just jumped on board with the Nikon D3300 and I bought a 55-200mm to go with my single lens kit lens of 18-55mm.
          I'm not aspiring to be great, just good enough at a reasonable price.

          @PandaKitty92: There's no optics or electronics in them, they're literally just a tube to extend the mount (with electrical contacts if you buy the better ones). Apart from the physical quality (how well fitting the mounts are) the only thing I can think of that could actually affect performance would be how well stray light reflections are minimised - how black the inside of the tube is painted basically.

    at these max apertures, this is pretty useless at the long end, right? you would be limited to shooting something still at very bright light.

      Of course it is still useful. Many famous photos in history of moving (in both senses of the world) subjects were taken with lenses with worse specs than this.

          Again, not necessarily as there have been many famous images taken handheld with worse spec lenses than this. Would better spec makes your shots superior? Perhaps. It would make it easier to handhold without blur but it is not absolutely needed. I took many nice shots in the pre-digital days with lenses worse than this.

      It doesn't have IS but has the same aperture range as the Canon EF 100-400mm L series lens. It is best used with a monopod or tripod, particularly at the telephoto end. If you are using it hand held full daylight will be best for your subject in the photo.

    Hello.
    Can someone please inform me about the differences between this lens and the one i already own
    - NIKON AF-S NIKKOR DX ZOOM ED VR 55-300MM F/4.5- 5.6
    I know the zoom is the same at 300, however what would the comparison be regarding the "Macro" with the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro ?
    I like the Sigma brand as i just love and use my SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 about 95% of the time.

      This Sigma can be used on full frame cameras, your Nikon is only suitable for cameras with the smaller APS-C sensor.

      Presuming you have a Nikon 3000 or 5000 series camera, the Nikon lens is probably slightly better all round. The Nikon lens has VR (vibration reduction) and the Sigma does not.

      Regarding the Macro capability, neither are specialised macro lenses, so it's hard to say without seeing a side by side comparison.
      This reviewof the Sigma lens didn't rate the macro capability very highly.

    I paid something like $250 last year for this one, so this is an amazing deal. Photo quality is alright, but it feels a bit flimsy (if you have a sun hood, the lens extends with gravity when you point it down). For $250 I wish I had gotten the Nikon with VR instead, but at $119 I wouldn't hesitate.
