1 month free only works if you've never signed up for Xbox live gold on the account. This works as long as you don't have gold at the moment.

You cannot use the redeemed codes to get free games or buy Gold special games.

Yes this has always been the case for new microsoft accounts where you get a 1 month trial for free if you've never had gold. This only works three times per Xbox. For everyone else who'd rather stick to their main account or has already used up their three new accounts to claim free gold, this is a cheap solution for one month of gold.

I think you mean you've had 7 years, you are only allowed 3 in credit.

What happens to my Games with Gold games if I cancel my Xbox Live Gold subscription?
On Xbox One, you will no longer be able to access your Games with Gold titles if you cancel your subscription. However, if you decide to renew your subscription at any time, you will be able to access and play your previously redeemed Games with Gold titles again.
On Xbox 360, any Games with Gold titles that you redeem as an Xbox Live Gold member are yours to keep, regardless of whether you continue your subscription.

The game this month is Borderlands. I have that on PC so this is a pass for me.
@superforever: I believe its a hardware thing so if ur playing on 360 then you don't need gold to play the games but on xbone you do even if you got the games from 360.
