Apple Macbook 12" (Gold) $1546.39 Delivered @ Kogan eBay

This is the cheapest I've seen since Apple upped the RRP to $1999

Not bad, considering they didn't announce new models this morning!

I didn't see the other colours, coz I only like the gold model!

  • any other cheaper options that are about the same size?

i have a moto g and x first gen, was thinking about something a bit more modern but on the cheaper end of the scale, i am not adverse to chinese phones :)

    • +1

You can get a sony z3 compact for ~$315 on ebay and the reviews show that the z5 is not all that much better

      • djtranny: Would you mind linking to the Z3 on eBay for that price? I did a search but couldn't find anything :(

    • +1

Just pre-ordered an Elephone p9000 for my wife: http://www.elephonemobile.com/collections/pre-order/products…. Cost works out to be about $300AUD ($219USD). Bought based on the specs including Helio P10 MTK6755 2.0GHz Octa Core, ARM Mali-T860, 5.5' FHD screen, 4G ROM +32Gb RAM (and supports 256Gb MicroSD) Fingerprint scanner, NFC, 3000mAh Fast Charge battery and Android 6.0.

For $179USD you can get the Lite version which has same spec except no Fingerprint scanner, NFC, and different camera sensors).

I'm not a rep, just liking the look, specs & price of this phone. (Due to ship mid April)

      • I'd love to know how it is, very interested in the P9000 as a spare :)

      • i've heard good and bad things about elephone, do they do any smaller models?

not many chinese makers seem to release <5" phones with ok specs.

        • Are there many non-Chinese ones that do?

        • the motorola e comes to mind, but there really aren't many, and like the e they reduce the specs maybe a bit too much :(

the sony compact is definitely the standout, but the price to me is prohibitive, also not a fan of glass.

a mid range that was 4.5-7" and kept small would perfect!

        • @baldy:

I agree, although arguably the Z5C is a steal for under $500 for a phone with current flagship specs in a rare compact form factor. The 23 megapixel camera just one example, which btw launches much quicker after the Marshmallow upgrade.

        • @elektron: glad you also have slow camera launching, I was growing old trying to take photos before the upgrade

        • +1

          @Jackson:

Yes, it was one of the first things I checked when I got Marshmallow and was much happier with the result. I mean there's no point of having a great camera if you can't use it quickly enough to capture a moment…

  • +1

shit, just paid 521.6 from last ebay 20% deals

    • Paid $607 back in October and thought it was a steal.

  • Is this a worthwhile upgrade from my no longer supported and sometimes crashes 1 year old z1 compact? Any other "small" flagship spec phones with decent cameras if I want Android not the "new" iPhone SE?

    • I've got the Z5P and I've got no complaints. Recently got the Marshmallow upgrade which has improved battery life and made the phone a fair bit zippier. Great camera too.

      • angry face still waiting for my note 5 marshmallow update… Upgraded from the Z3 as no one could tell me who or when the z5p was coming!

  • Good onya for posting but are people going to post every item that kogan is selling just coz its 20%off?

    • +14

Yeah it's no different to other 20% ebay deals, there ends up being a LOT of different deals posted.

I posted this one because I was looking into these 2 products specifically.

    • +11

I personally find it helpful when posters go through the laborious task of finding the deals and doing the calculations so I can go through them a lot easier :) cheers OP

      • haha thanks!

I too find it helpful when other people find deals for "me" to buy :)

  • Which is better, this one of the LG G4 posted earlier? Good camera and battery are my preferance

    • +2

      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6901&idPhone2=…

Just depends if you want a 4.6" phone or 5.5"

    • +1

Dude, the Z5 compact is exactly that, the G4 is massive. Get the phone that suits you best.

    • if camera and battery, then sony i would think judging by the specs of the battery, camera is hard to say.

The sony has the arguable faster cpu and gpu but less ram..

    • I'd say go the G4 and avoid the z5c as it is known to have some heat issues. Ultimately, though it is your preference.

  • Nice deal. Just make sure you get a case and a tempered glass screen glass protector.

    • Been using mine naked for a good half a year with no issues.

      • +1

I assume you mean the 'phone is naked…. :-)

I've had a simple thin case on mine but no screen protector with no issues. I've only dropped it once though. My wife smashed hers in the first week. She now has her third tempered glass screen protector - the first two having been smashed when being dropped, but in those cases the screen was fine. I guess it all depends on how you treat the phone…. ;-)

        • I assume you mean the 'phone is naked…. :-)

          Err..no, the phone has a case :-)

  • +1

Good price for the phone, but there are reports of the phone getting hot and throttling, much like any other SD810 device

    • -3

Updates have all but fixed the heating, and it has a dedicated heatpipe to sort it out. It's not an issue. I have a Nexus 6P, and the Snapdragon 810 is fantastic with a bit of 'sorting out'.

      • +2

The Z5 series suffers extensively from overheating with its SD810 chip, and the recent updates haven't fixed anything. I've got this phone (Compact)

        • Oh, I'm not gonna argue I don't own it. I was under the impression it was fixed, is it that bad?

        • @deanylev:

We are talking about the Z5 compact specially here. Yes the s810 is ok in other phones.

        • @Ronnnie: I know, I added the 6P thing because he said 'much like any other S810 device'.

  • +1

Yeah lots of user complaints of overheating unfortunately. Smaller size plus s810 didn't seem like a good idea.

    • +1

Not sure why someone actually downvoted you. If they bother using Google, they will see heaps of complaints about the overheating and phone battery depletion issue on this phone. I own one, so we're just trying to let people be 'aware' I got rid of it after a month.

      • Wow the heating was that bad that you got rid of it?

  • The MacBook is good price but wouldn't the import tax wipe out the discount?

    • The location says it's in Melbourne, so I don't think it applies.

  • +3

I have a Z5 compact, I love it. I've never known it to overheat, or even get warm at all tbo. Perhaps those complaining are people that sit there for hours playing graphic demanding games? And why the hell would you get a compact phone if games are your thing?

    Great phone, feature packed..

    • Actually it generally caused by recording 4k videos.

    • If you say talk on Skype with your friends for say 10 minutes, the phone will be super hot to touch.

  • Hows Z3+ vs Z5 compact? Any known issues from those who have used?

  • its good deal but I don't get it why they have different prices on their ebay webpage and on their own website
    It's really disappointing

    • I don't know if they're always different prices or just for the sales, but I thought it was something about ebay having percentage based fees to sell stuff like this on their site.
I couldn't really understand how the fees worked.

  • -3

i was interested in Sony Xperia Z5 premium, but too expensive even after discount. Also sony almost never updates their android v poor support.

I decided to go with Nexus 6P, $520 right now at kogan !

    • +1

Sony are very good with updates. Got Marshmallow last week for my Z5P, and my 3 year old Xperia Z got updates right up to 5.1.

      • That's good to know

  • Nice deal, is there any advantage to upgrading from a Sony Compact Z3 (which has been the best smartphone I have ever owned) ? I read 4K and better camera, and better CPU (these aren't really that important as I have been happy with Z3's performance and camera). I am assuming aptX is still supported - I love the Sony's matching aptX bluetooth headphones and battery life/sound quality.

    • Pretty much any Android phone has AptX these days, but I do like that Sony is the only one that actually tells you when it's connected using AptX.

If you're an audiophile who enjoys great sound (especially with hi-res material) without wires, you can consider upgrading to the Z5C for LDAC, but you'll also need to buy Sony's compatible devices. I have two - MDR-1ABT and SRS-X55, and can recommend both.

Btw, the fingerprint scanner is also great.

  • Compact spec does look nice.
But isn't a HD screen a bit underwhelming on a flagship phone?

    • I haven't seen it in real life, but that said because of the small screen, it has 323 ppi.
It wouldn't be too bad, it'd be around the ppi that Apple has with their iPhone.
FHD would've been definitely better, but my point is, it wouldn't feel like it's 2010.

Though, HD screen probably would be better for battery and on-screen performance?

      • 720p screen going to benefit battery life and performance. I doubt too many people can see the pixels on a screen this res and size. The z3c for instance was one of the best smartphones in terms of battery life. Seems last gen flagships weren't as good as previous s801 or s805 powered devices interms of battery life. :(

        • Overheating issue in other words mean that it's wasting a lot of battery (Looking at you, Snapdragon 810). Plus a lot of devices moved to QHD as well, which would've worsened the problem. Not to mention, a lot of smartphone manufacturers are reducing the battery capacity to make their phone lighter and thinner as well.

Personally never understood why we need more than FHD on the phones. Some argue that it's for languages that require fine details (i.e. Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc etc), that said, I personally had no problem using the phone with HD screen and so did my girlfriend.

        • @Oversimplified:

My thoughts exactly. The screen-to-body ratio is way more important to me than having FHD, as long as the pixel dencity is 300 ppi or higher. Interestingly the screen-to-body ratio reduced in the Z5 compared to the Z3. And is reducing even further in the upcoming X-series (a replacement for the Z-series).

    • I have it and would challenge anyone to tell the difference at normal viewing distance in this size. You can only spot it if you pixel peep.

And yes, it's the HD screen that puts the Compact ahead of the other Z5 variants in both the battery and the performance benchmarks.

  • Z5C seems to come from Hong Kong. So I'd expect no tax invoice to be able to claim back GST via TRS unless anyone knows otherwise.

    • +1

      no GST from kogan

      • +1

        There's a commercial invoice

        • Which I presume is only good for claiming back on tax and warranty … but no good for GST claim via TRS since no official GST invoice.

        • @nonpop:

Presumptions are the mother of all (profanity).

But yeah, no gst, just tax and warranty.

  • Macbook - only slightly better price comparing to Apple Refurb store you can get any day of a week (if you don't mind the packaging).
In the latter case you get genuine Apple Australia warranty vs Kogan.

  • Too bad Xperia z5 compact does not support Wireless charging, as it is definitely useful to charge my current broken LG Nexus 4 USB port

  • if ur after small phone this is good option

if you're after larger phones, NExus 6P is vastly superior to Sony Z5 Premium
