I think they're doing it as part of the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus package launch. Maybe they feel guilty about try to rob you for charging 1200 MS points for 5 maps (2 of which were already in CoD4). I prefer Battlefield 2 over Modern Warfare 2 but I still got the avatar item. Haha.
It's free only until tomorrow. I understand the last time someone posted a free avatar item (the Bing tshirt), it wasn't well received. I myself didn't get the tshirt. Hopefully this one is more favourable as a freebie.

Just login to your Xbox, go to customize your Avatar and then select the Marketplace, followed by Modern Warfare 2. You'll find the Night Vision Goggles for 0 MS Points.
Note: Only for today.
