$200 for a 300 Lumens light is insane. You can get the gold standard 'exposure' brand Joystick 750 lumen light http://www.pushys.com.au/exposure-lights-joystick-mk9-750lm-… with helmet or handlebar mount for about $200 and exposure is considered the ferrari level of bike lights!!

$50 was the normal price years ago on the 'net. Mine is still going strong.
These days, they are half that price, and I don't think there is anything special about the ones from Kathmandu. Its not like it is a respected brand.

You can get a triple-Cree, 27 bazillion (chinese) lumens, 4-cell li-ion power, for $35delivered, AU stock.

after years of buying random el-cheapo lights on ebay which were all prone to breaking, not turning on, not waterproof etc. I have finally bit the bullet and bought this: http://indigo.lighting/

It's australian — from adelaide, and I've tried it once before which was pretty good. I rode with the low setting and it was freaking bright. looks rugged and durable.

one of the old ebay lights included the one pictured that came with a battery pack, which can be had for about $20-30. but the problem is that the cable is way too long if you mount it on your handlebar and the battery pack on the top tube. the battery keeps slipping to the seat tube. also there's no "off" button so there is always a standby light that is on and will drain the battery if you don't physically unplug the cables. the other one I have has a totally unadjustable beam that is totally focussed and blinding in one spot only.

  • Or you can just not be "that guy" and ride at night time / low visibility times of the day

Lost count of how many times I've nearly run over idiots in low vis gear

    • so just sleep at work in the darker months of the year? Dont go home, just stay at the office and sleep under the desk George Costanza style?

      • of course! wont have it any other way
