Which ATM's in Australia Have The Lowest Fees for Foreign Issued Cards?

Hi
Has anyone used foreign issued (ie cards issued from overseas, not from Australia) Mastercard debit/Cirrus cards to withdraw cash from ATMs in Australia?

Which type of ATM offers the lowest charges?

CBA - $3 per transaction
Citi - $2 per transaction

plus Cirrus charges of approx $2 as well.

  • My citibank visa debit is ok for free atm withdrawals overseas

Which country issued your Citibank Visa debit?
I am aware that the Oz card can be used for free ATM withdrawal overseas.
What I am after is an Ozzie ATM network with the lowest charges for FOREIGN issued debit cards.

      • Oops. I scanned and misunderstood.
After your edit it now makes more sense.

What is this card good for?

  • ASB is cheaper than Cirrus, for Commonwealth.
    Likewise for Commonwealth Indonesia.

Some Citi's overseas offer no ATM fee withdrawals at any Citi ATM globally.
Similarly, Westpac ATMs offer no ATM fee withdrawals to a host of overseas banks like BOA (US), DBS (Sing), Nova Scotia (Canada) etc.
I remember I used to see some NAB branches offer a fee-free ATM (the one I remember was the little NAB kiosk thing on the ground floor near Coles in Westfield Bondi Junction), but not sure if that is still on.

  • ANZ also charges $2 much easier to find then citibank ATMs.

  • If Visa debit is fine (rather than MC debit), you can get cash out for free at Woolies.

When getting cash out at a self-service counter, you have the option of CHQ/SAV or Visa Debit. If you hit Visa Debit, it does actually go through the Visa system - I've had cash outs take a couple of days to fully clear (the money is removed from the available balance as soon as I take the money out, but the 'actual' balance doesn't update for a few days).

Not sure about Coles, but they may have something similar.

NOTE: I haven't tried this with an overseas Visa debit card, just a local one. I assume (I know, I know) that the system would still allow you to take cash out from foreign Visa debit cards.

      LOL

      • No problems with local visa/MC debit. Use in Woolies, Maccas, Coles etc for the longest time.

I don't think it will work with foreign issued cards. Haven't tried yet.

  • Check with the bank that issued the card. They may be linked with a bank in Australia that allows you to make fee-free withdrawals. My foreign bank has an agreement with Westpac, so I can make withdrawals from their machines for free.

    • Unfortunately the bank that issued the card is one of those smaller, local banks. So no special arrangements with the Oz banks.
