Cheap Cheap Lah - Community Bargain Sharing Site for Singapore

Update 2024-02-29: We are shutting down CheapCheapLah. See this comment for more information.

Original Post

Perhaps it's already a common knowledge amongst some, but I feel we still need a public announcement. After launching our New Zealand website back in 2014, we have started another website, Cheap Cheap Lah, that aims to be the "Singapore-equivalent of OzBargain".

Again due to "popular demand". It was asked last year, and the year before. In fact when I checked my old emails, I have been asked about Singapore opportunity as far back as 2009. CheapCheapLah.com was a domain that I purchased in 2010 thinking maybe it would be a future possibility. Due to lots of procrastination, we have finally made it online at the beginning of the year.

I have only been to Singapore twice — 15 years ago for work, and 30 years ago as a tourist :) Comparing to New Zealand, it's quite a bit of hurdle learning how things work over there. Perhaps some OzBargaining Singaporean would like to help out?

  • We are closing down CheapCheapLah at the end of February 2024

Here's an announcement I've just made at CheapCheapLah. The link will be dead at the end of the month so here's the copy:

Long time no post, and here's an update on the last day of the year of Rabbit. We will be closing down CheapCheapLah at the end of February 2024 due to lack of activities. Website and social media profiles will be removed and domain will be parked and/or redirect to announcements on our other sites.

CheapCheapLah was launched almost 8 years ago due to requests from the Australian expat community and Singaporeans coming back from Australia. They all want something like OzBargain in Singapore, so we contemplated providing one. Initially we thought we'll just build a platform to facilitate bargain hunters in Singapore to share and discover deals and promotions, and the community will gradually grow, similar to what we have in Australia and New Zealand.

However the reality is far from "build it and they will come", as community building is far more that just tech stack and engineering. After almost 8 years, thousands of deals (posted mostly by @JSQUARED and @neil) and lots of time invested in keeping the site updated — there's still no traction. No one else has been posting deals, let alone having a community of bargain hunters helping each other to find the best deals.

So we decided that it's time to switch off the site and call it a day. We (Delvu Media in Australia) would have one less website to worry about, and maybe a local team can step up to provide what's missing here.

Shared with my friends, a number from Singapore. Let the bargains roll.

  • I'm getting a McAfee Warning !!

I'm purchasing a flight & hotel package to Thailand from Expedia.com.sg for an unbelievable price (2hr return flights + 3 nights 4 star = S$250) - but the Ozbargainer in me is still looking for an Expedia discount code.
Perhaps this site will list such codes.

    Any love ?

    • We are still looking at the source of coupon codes but there are lots of coupon sites in Singapore already. It shouldn't be hard to find an Expedia SG coupon. There are also some cashback sites in SG (not as good as Cashrewards / PricePal here though) where you might get cashback for Expedia SG.

  • After a while I think it will be bigger than the NZ site. Being a city-state it is more interconnected than NZ, and their population is bigger than NZ's. Plus Asians love bargains.

One thing I found is that OzBargain has trained Aussies (or at least OzBargainers) well over the years in communal knowledge of finding bargains. While Singaporeans (or Asians) are in general very frugal and love bargains, they don't really have an online place to bind them together.

So hopefully this new site would be useful for Singapore.

However it took 10 years for OzBargain to grow to this size. I think it will take a while for SG as well.

  • Hi Scotty,

The site looks good. I signed up and have posted a couple of comps.

I've got a few more to post but am limited to a maximum of 3 per day, as a new user. Just wondering how many posts are required to become a regular user?

    Thanks!

It's a new site but many restrictions are inherited from OzBargain including new user limits. New users are normally restricted to maximum 3 posts per day. An account that is more than a week old ceases to be a new user.

      • Thanks for that info :)

  • Just turned off the site. CheapCheapLah.com now redirects here.

Yep totally understand, hate to say it but it felt insignificant compared to Ozb. It needed a robust team of on the ground bargain hunter's to get it going and keep it going. But I think Singapore is more about food and experience rather then goods and services.

    • I do agree that having someone on the ground in crucial — maybe not literally, but able to tap into the local retail & shopping scene there. We didn't have a team in New Zealand either but ChoiceCheapies is doing relatively okay — but that's probably due to the similarities between AU & NZ retailers. Whereas for SG we do need people in the know to be part of it, rather than just us pushing out deals that we got from promo emails or scraping Facebook pages.

  • But I think Singapore is more about food and experience rather then goods and services

Maybe Singaporeans are already thrifty minded.

  • So sad to know the website has been closed for 10 months. I would spend my day off in Singapore next year, so I try to find some bargains on the Internet. I do remember that OZbargains runs a similar website in SG, but I only found this page to let me know the website was closed down.
Thanks to OZbargins, which saved me some money and I got my nintendo swtich deal back in 2019 Blank Friday sales (375 with Mario Kart 8) when I studied in AU, thank you!
