I'm Obese and Need Two Tickets!

Hi,

As the title suggests 🍰 I'm obese and would like two tickets when travelling (I can fit in a domestic flights seat without a seatbelt extension).

The purpose of my travels is to visit a relatively cheap place so I can have a suit or two made at a tailor.

What are some cheap places to travel to where it isn't going to cost an excessive amount to purchase two return airfares - am I gong to be better suited in waiting for some sales?

I know I can get two return tickets Gold Coast to Singapore for roughly $800 via Flyscoot however they don't seem to have any reputable and cheap tailors!

Looking forward to constructive and criticising comments.

Cheers.

  • Just buy two fake armrests, choose a centre seat and board early.

  • Agree with other suggestions for either Bali or Thailand ( my Hubble has had suits made in both Bali & Phuket - the quality is superb & the price extremely reasonable - they also include shirts & ties for a little extra )
With regard to flights - have you not thought about flying business - seats are far larger & service great. Probably wouldn't be any different in price to having 2 in economy.
However, my only other thought regarding the fact that you are a large person, is that both Bali & Thailand are very humid countries - you need to take into consideration wether you will be able to tolerate the heat.It can be very tiring to be out & about in it for hours on end.
Also hope you have sorted out adequate travel insurance.
Don't mean to sound all doom & gloom - truly hope it all works out for you.

    • I've checked TID and it will cost $66! I'm hoping the humidity and limited food choices will help me shed some weight while visiting, making my trip home more enjoyable.

  • I can't help you with prices and such - i'm not that up to date with the best deals on airlines but i can vouch in and say the majority of Virgin staff i've met while flying are extremely helpful and considerate so all i can do is recommend Virgin if you wish to have a nice flight experience onboard

I had to make an account to post and say good on you for being so understanding and having such a great attitude about the issue (having to purchase two seats) and good luck with your new suit!

  • Surely when you account for the 800 flights plus accommodation, there's an Australian tailor who could help you out cheaper?

    • For the same price I could get an Australian Tailor but it would be of lower quality etc.

  • I've checked the seat width of the 787 Dreamliner and it's almost on par with the Premium Economy Seats on Virgin Australia International which i've flown before, and was quite roomy. I'm fairly short compared with most males so the legroom isn't an issue - more the shoulder/fat arms/hitting the next person etc.

  • Suit city in fairfield nsw has great suits and xheap also cheap to alter.
Big mens clothing I think in basshill plaza also do stuff for those living life XXL. Also a place in paramatta cant remember the name of the store also do big men clothing in insane sizes.

I dont know why you would need to fly somewhere else to get the same quality.

One of my mates wwnt to thailand and got a few suits and he took them home and found that a lot of areas where not cut right and had to get some alterations done to fix the problems.

    • Stores in Brisbane are trying to flog $700 suits which are 50/50 Wool/Poly combo.

  • Might be cheaper to fly the tailor out here to make your suit. Might get a wife too.

  • Not that cheap, but I used Rajawongse Clothier near Nana BTS on Sukhumvit Rd in Bangkok. Website is http://www.dress-for-success.com

There are plenty of other tailors around Bangkok if this one is too steep.

Not even joking, the cheapest way would be to lose weight. Not only will you be buying less food but you'll save on that air fair too. You won't be paying extra for that tailored suit either and it will come with added confidence, health benefits and sex appeal.

The flight cost and being an ozbargainer should spur you to lose weight.
It will be hard initially, but do small things like reduce the soft drink intake or switch to "zero".
Good on you for acknowledging that you are obese.

  • When I was in Phuket, Thailand for the first time around 2010-2011 for holiday, I found a tailor. Got a jacket, 2 shirts and 2 trousers made in cashmere (how true the claim of cashmere is; considering the price of the suit, I'm unsure). Cost me 6700 baht (about $250 AU) at the time. Quality-wise, I've only used the jacket a few times so can't really comment on that (but it definitely looks well made. No odd stitching or cuts that I can see, material all seems uniform in thickness) however the shirts and trousers are pretty well made…. I've worn the pants almost daily for the past 4 years, treating them like shit (heavy work; regular machine washed after 2-3 wears; dryer/clothesline half-half) and until very recently (stitching gave out) they've held up really well. They breathe well and don't get hot in the summers… and keep me warm enough in the winter (though everyone's tolerance for hot/cold is different, of course)

Went to Phuket again around the end of 2014 and bought 4 more pairs of trousers for about $120 AU (can't find the order card for this one to confirm the actual price paid in baht). Although until very recently I've been using the previous 2 pairs the majority of the time, these look a little better quality.

Guy's name is Tony… was also the same guy both visits. Great english, nice guy. Doesn't mind having a chat. And doesn't pressure you for a sale. Order took about a week from measurements to a final fitting/delivery (with a fitting in-between). A picture of his business card (from the first visit) is here: http://i.imgur.com/2N60E6Q.jpg

Does mail orders (though unsure if he accepts measurements being sent).. seriously recommended.

Contact: Mr. Lucky - Mr. Jamie Dury

So that's where he's hiding these days!

  • Also I'd seriously avoid any tailor over there who advertise 2 days or less… especially if they're in a well travelled area (hotels, airport).

Surely this is a troll. While I don't subscribe to body shaming, you should definitely not be proud of being that obese.

  • My suggestion would be to sign up to a couple of credit card deals. Get yourself 120k QFF. ANZ has 75k at the moment.
That's enough for a return flight to Hong Kong in business class. Taxes will be $400 or so.

Vietnam is also an option but I would suggest sticking with Ho chi Minh and not Hoi An. It's just a tourist trap and the tailoring there is not as good.
A good tailor will take a few weeks to make your suit. You should stay for at least a second measurement after the initial one. You can get the suits sent back to you. If you have enough time to stay 3-4 weeks then even better.

    • I've got 150K on Virgin, get around 20K points a month from Amex/Visa with NAB Velocity.

      • Sorry 160K.

      • +1

You must own a small business to get those kind of points each month.

  • Go to a local tailor and pay for just getting the measurements done then sign up to "www.cuzin.com" and find someone in Hong Kong who can order it for you with the measurments and then post the suit to Australia.

In Hong Kong, tailors are everywhere but what you want is the established ones that cater to the "high class" clients. You can get tailors in Bali, Vietnam and Thailand but Hong Kong is the financial hub of Asia and so it has a high concentration of those "high powered" executives and business people. Therefore, you can get those high-end tailors that are hard to find in other countries.

When I was in Hong Kong, I visited my brother who worked as a lawyer in finance. He recommended a tailor that service those top-end lawyers and executives. What's amazing is that their prices are expensive by local standards but cheap by Australian standards. I got a number of tailored shirts made for only $30-$40 each.

  • Have you thought of one more expensive ticket in business or first class instead of two in coach?

    • Coach? Seriously dude, know your country.

      • What's your issue with "coach"?

        • Same as my issue with mom and color. Its economy in Australia.

I'm Obese and Need Two Tickets!…. no what you need is to lose weight but do it slowly. I am impressed with the amount of research you are doing to buy some clothes you need to put in the same or more effort to get your health back, else the suits will be a short term pleasure. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. why not aim to buy suits in oz in 3 years when you have got your health back and in the mean time buy some cheap suits that you can burn in a heap when you have got your health back. i recall the mayor of lockyer valley recently passing away after a stroke at a relatively young age. He had a lot more to give to his community and could have done so if only he gave a bit more time looking after himself - really a sad situation.

    • +1

If he doesn't need a seatbelt extension I would say he is not grossly obese maybe just according to the BMI figures, probably has a stomach, big shoulders or tall/short and finds it hard to get that all important for straight off the rack.

  • Isn't business class = 2 x ticket price of economic class and at least from what I last checked 5 years ago seats = 1.5 x size of economic class seats and more comfy with better leg room. But hell yes lose weight is what you really need.

    • Maybe twice full-price economy, but if OP is flexible, especially on budget airlines (some of which have "business" class), 2x economy can be a lot cheaper.

Don't forget to book the second seat as a child seat so you don't pay so much taxes.

  • If you are a large guy, whether tall, fat, broad shoulders etc, most of the good tailors with the quality fabrics will add an extra charge for the extra material needed so keep that in mind with your budget. There is just as good tailors in Bangkok as Hong Kong so do some research. Major Thai tourist hubs such as Samui I would so no to as well as Phuket. I speak from experience of around 50 suits over the years, in Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam and I'm Australia from o/s tailors.

I think it's disgusting singleing out anyone for their natural physical characteristics.
However, I do think ugly people should be sat at the back. ;->

  • As you talk about scoot, look at the scootbiz product. Not a huge amount more, and the seats are bigger and you have a bit more space between you and the person next to you (google it for pics).

  • My brother had some nice bespoke suits made relatively cheaply in Bangkok. Although, the fabric they used to line the suit (silk iirc) was a bit hot for the Qld climate. Also, accommodation is usually cheaper (and better value for money) in Thailand or Bali rather than Singapore.

  • BALI: I found Jermyn Street Tailors, Poppies Lane, Kuta through a trip advisor search. Got six pairs of trousers of beautiful quality made last year for AUD 40 / pair without bartering, just accepted their price, so you can probably get it down. Stopped in to see them for measurements on arrival in Bali on Friday morning, came back Saturday afternoon to try a pair on for approval then picked all 6 pairs up Monday evening before I flew out. I have their contact details somewhere if you'd like to tic-tac with them before cementing your plans.

I've used http://www.maccustomtailor.com/ which fly their Bangkok tailer to Austraila a few times a year. I paid AUD$1200 for 2 suits with 2 shirts. Cost is based on material you pick. I got a middle ground super 120 wool but their were heaps of options either side. I was about 90% happy with them only because I wanted a super slim fit which leaves no room for error. My jackets and shirts fit like gloves, but the pants were a bit off which required local alterations (Which they re-reimbursed the costs anyway) However saying that, my mate who is a bigger guy (6ft1, 110kg) also got suits made at the same time and his fits were 100% spot on. He didn't want slim fits for obvious reasons and they nailed a more relaxed fit. However he did get hit with an additional 10 or 15% surcharge (can't remember?) because his larger size required more material. So bear that in mind.

  • In the past I have gone to Vietnam and had suits custom made.
The value was great. But often I had to bring a design that I liked so that they can replicate the design.
Not sure how cheap Vietnam is these days and if there is another country/option?

  • Check the paper ads (probably business section) rather than flying to somewhere to get suits made. There's master tailors that fly from those regions regularly and will measure/fit you, get the suits made and will fly back with them and adjust to your requirements.

  • I agree, I dropped a grand and had a fully tailored suit and two business shirts personally measured and then delivered 6 months ago by a travelling Asian Taylor. No need to fly overseas and it was a tax return well spent. I used, http://www.ansfashions.com/, who visit most Aus Capital Cities. I'm not obese but very tall and can't buy off the rack stuff. Good Luck!

  • There are some tailors who will sometimes fly down to Australia to do a bunch of measurements, showing off samples of materials they have etc, then head back and make the suit and send it to you.
These are the guys I used, but I haven't seen emails from them of doing those trips since 2013. https://foursquare.com/v/british-tailors/4d312cc56c7c721e108…

I'm fat too, if anybody has a problem go eat a fat d@ck!

  • You want to go to Bangkok to get it done. Around SGD$300 to have a suit custom made by a rather reputable tailor there. I can't remember where exactly the location is as I haven't been there in 5 years. Found him on a travellor guidebook which highly recommended his services. All I can remember is A.Song Tailors. Also, since you are rather large, he may charge extra and the prices may not still be the same as it was 5 years back.

Actually I just found the website.
    http://www.asongtailor.com/

Flights to BKK shouldn't be that expensive, too.
Anyways it's up to you. Good luck.

  • just go to kelly's country?

  • Another +1 for Hoi An, I have had clothes made their and they are great

  • Hey buddy i'm not sure if it's been said or not, but just fly Scoot Biz. The seats are bigger and reasonably priced. I have the same problem, i'm not obese but there is never enough leg room for me and i have to point my shoulders in so it's not brushing up against the person next to me.

As for your suit, just go to Pattaya in Thailand. Fly into bangkok, 2 hour cab ride there. You can have your choice of Tailors (Get a Thai one, not an Indian.)

    Hi,

I suggest that you find an 'MPort' at your nearest Westfield. It basically does your BMI and a full 3D body scan with your measurements. (You pay $20 a year for the full measurements etc.,)

Travel to somewhere like Vietnam and visit Hoi An, excellent tailors - I have things I'm still wearing from a trip 5-6 years ago.

  • Thank you for all that provided constructive feedback!

I've decided I'll travel to Hong Kong towards the end of the year, and this gives me sometime to get into better shape.

For now I was able to purchase two 70/30 (Wool/Poly) suits in Australia for $1,200 - they're currently with a local tailor getting shortened so I don't look like a clown.
