Battery / CPU testing app for suspect Sony E4G battery life

Hi all,

I bought an E4G with it's "2 day battery life" being a large draw card. But mine only gets through 1 day and a few hrs.

I previously owned a Huawei y550 and with the same usage pattern would get me through 2 days (just).

I am running the E4G in Stamina mode during the day, and in ultra stamina+ flight mode at night. Over night in this mode it loses approximately 1% per hour. The Y550 would drop 1% in flight mode over the entire night.

Biggest energy draw is from browsing using Opera browser, with the phone getting warm. I never experienced any heat with the Y550.

So in summary, is there any bench mark app that I can use to test the battery or possibly an in efficient CPU? or does anyone have any comparative data (for example playing x video for x mins)?

Cheers guys

Different phone, but likely very similar test conditions.

    "2-day battery life

During battery performance testing conducted between July and September 2014 in a laboratory under active use conditions reflective of the Typical Smartphone User by Sony Mobile Communications AB, the Z3 lasted at least 48 hours on average until battery exhaustion.

Battery performance testing reflective of a Typical Smartphone User usage profile involved using the device for approximately 5 hours in a 24-hour period, for a range of typical usage scenarios (calling, texting, web, social networking, games, camera, music and video). Default settings were applied for the device during battery performance testing including display brightness of 100 Nits and Battery stamina mode off.

How bright do you keep the screen?

2 Days battery life can mean different things to different people.

      • I have everything set to the lowest for maximum battery life. However, the screen even on the lowest setting is still way too bright at night, but barely readable outdoors, so the dimmer does work, but I would prefer it much less on the lowest setting.

I always turn my data, wifi, location etc off, and screen timeout to the lowest option. My phone is always in Stamina mode, and I don't use it 5 hrs a day and have never played a game on it. So based on that test, I should be getting 3 days+ ?

I have been in contact with Sony Mobile and they are ducking and weaving on the answer to what browser was used, what games were played etc in their test (I use Opera). I get the feeling the battery life isn't what they claim, or maybe I have a dud…and they don't really want it back.

        Anyone else using the E4G?

          Did you read this comment?

That's how they measure the battery life as all companies have their ways to measure it.

        • @ozhunter:

Cheers, but I did write below it,

"what browser was used, what games were played etc in their test?". They cant claim all games and browsers use the same power.

I would have thought the easiest way would be to say play 'x' generic video in 'x' resolution with screen brightness at maximum in loop and the battery should last a minimum of 'x' hrs etc.

  • You can use GSAM battery monitor app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.b…) to monitor your app usage and screen on time normally the screen will use the most amount of juice. Based on your 1% an hour in standby sounds about right you can check wakelocks and time spent at each CPU step using Better Battery Stats https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.be… to see if any rogue apps are preventing the phone from going into deep sleep when you are not using it

    • Cheers!

The factory software gives me a breakdown in % battery use, currently with:

      Screen 54%
      Opera 12%
      Android System 8%
      Android OS 6%
      Phone Idle 4%
      Mobile Standby 3%
      Wifi 3%
      Media Server 2%

I used "CPU Spy" to confirm the Cpu was going in to deep sleep when LED notifications were flashing, and it is.

So maybe my screen is too bright even on the lowest setting (I have moved the colour sliders to make it darker), or my battery is suss.

      • If your screen is too bright and you like it dark you could use lux lite to control it instead of the stock auto brightness it allows you to put your brightness into negative and set it up the way you like depending on the ambient light. Other than that you might be need to explore custom roms and kernels to control cpu sampling rates and governors etc to boost your battery life.

        • Cheers, I heard something about FLux as well. Will check them out.
