Bamboo Pillow (Brand New in Packaging) $15 at Salvation Army, Gladesville (Sydney) NSW

90

Spotted these about a month ago in the Salvation Army thrift store on Victoria Road in Gladesville (Sydney) NSW about a month ago and noticed on the weekend that they still have heaps of them in stock.

Brand new in original packaging, a 'bambillo' style memory-foam pillow with bamboo-based cover. I estimate that they have at least 30 units in stock (visible in the shop) but there might be more, they seem to have boxes of them stashed everywhere! Good quality, comfy, recommended.

After buying these for $15 a month ago, I saw the same thing for $70 (yeah, I know, right!) at a pop-up at the Macquarie Shopping Centre, and $40 each elsewhere.

Address is 187 Victoria Rd, Gladesville NSW 2111

  • Mona Vale Salvos also have these in store. Saw some a few days ago. Been there for a while as well.

  • Should be available at every Salvos Store in Sydney. Stock numbers may vary as they sell fast.

Yep the store up the road from me sold out in about a week and I was told they had many repeat customers come back and buy these for friends/family after trying them out.

    • Hey qiqi1021:Do you think its available near to granville or parramatta ? Thanks

Sorry jag007, I don't know about the availability in the western Sydney stores. They were meant to be a one off stock allocation for last year's birthday sale so all stores would have had them at one point.

Eastern Sydney stores have reordered as a lot of our customers have requested them.

        • Oh okay thabks nate for the reply cheers☺

If they're like the ones I've seen, they are memory foam inside with a partially bamboo (of an uncertain percentage) cover. Still not too bad, but it's really just using a current fad fibre to sell them.

    • If I remember correctly, it actually says that on the packaging for these ones. They certainly fit that description.

Interestingly, memory foam pillows are also pretty expensive, so I guess this is a win-win!

40% bamboo, 60% polyester to be precise.

Filling is 100% shredded memory foam.

How are the prices at Salvos these days?

My local one started bumping up their prices early last year, and rarely can you find a bargain. Its just feels so overpriced, especially anything with a brand name. Perhaps I am just getting stingier over the years, but 25-30 or more bucks for a 2nd hand jacket?

The local Vinnies is much better value, and usually about half the price of Salvos.

  • My new favourite pillow. Got one for $20 at xmas sales. They are slightly smaller than normal and probably rated high firm. Once they're worn in after a couple of weeks they're great (for me).

thanks OP and also NOTHING against the SALVOS, but the product seems to be "not fit for the purpose" based on these reviews .

That's not the same product. There's about a bajillion different ones. I bought two of these ones from the Salvos and I'm happy with them.

  • +1 for Op shop deal, love it.

We get too many customers assuming these are filled with bamboo fibre which is incorrect.

To clear up any misconceptions please read: http://www.pillow-people.com.au/blog/The-Bambillo-and-Bamboo…

      • We get too many customers assuming these are filled with bamboo fibre which is incorrect

Well, to solve that problem, simply describe your products more honestly.

        Try this quick quiz…

A Duck Down Pillow is filled with ball bearings?

A Latex Pillow is filled with concrete?

A Memory Foam Pillow is filled with shards of broken glass?

        A Bamboo Pillow is filled with….. ?

        (Think about it)

        • Uh, you know we're talking about a charity that's selling goods cheap because someone donated a container load of said goods, right?!

        • @douglasb: Actually the Salvos Stores did purchase these tocc sell as part of the annual birthday sale late last year.

          http://salvosstores.salvos.org.au/shop/salvos-stores-129th-b…

But they have been advertised as bamboo memory foam pillows in all stores and material (please see catalogue in link above).

        • @douglasb:

I don't know, nor do I care about the circumstances.

The person who buys from the Salvos is a 'consumer' in the same way as they are a consumer who purchased from Myers or any other retailer.

Any "misconception" is a direct result of how the retailer promotes the product. If these things are memory foam, covered in a fabric that has a tiny percentage of bamboo in it, then simply advise buyers accordingly.

        • @qiqi1021:

If they are advertised as "memory foam" then that is reasonably OK.

The leaflet you linked to is still somewhat misleadingly worded as "Bamboo Memory Foam" (which leads buyers to think that the foam is made of bamboo), when in actual fact they are "Memory foam pillow with bamboo cover".

But this deal (on Ozbargain) is titled "Bamboo Pillow" and that needs to be corrected.

        • @llama:

This deal (on OzBargain) quote the product packaging explicitly.

Next I expect you'll want to call the ACCC because Chicken-Fried Steak doesn't contain chicken. Who you gonna Generation-Y-blame for that? Obama?

      • Lots of folks like to operate on pre-established misconceptions and don't bother to read the bit of the label that explains precisely how the product is constructed.

I too presumed, based on the tv advertising I'd seen featuring similar products, that bamboo fibre was involved. I read the label. I learned that my presumption was wrong. I over it and got on with my life!

        • +1

The Trade Practices Act covers this quite clearly.

          https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/misleading-claims-advertis…

You cannot blame a consumer for thinking that the product is made of bamboo, if the retailer and packaging states that it's bamboo.

I too presumed, based on the tv advertising I'd seen featuring similar products, that bamboo fibre was involved. I read the label. I learned that my presumption was wrong. I over it and got on with my life!

If I was sold you a $10,000 leather sofa, and at some time after delivery you read the label and found that it was actually 100% Vinyl?
          - would you say "I learned that my presumption was wrong. I over it and got on with my life!" ???

        • @llama:

No… first up, you wouldn't get to "I was sold you" me a couch, 'cos I'd apply the principle of caveat emptor and make my own enquiries before I committed to a purchase.

Second, if I made a mistake, I'd take responsibility for it, not run about whinging and going all Generation Y looking for someone to blame for my mistake.

Third, if anyone is dumb enough to believe that a pillow is made from bamboo without seeking confirmation, then, they're dumb.

This isn't a misleading claim, it's an instance of consumer stupidity. The Trade Practices Act doesn't apply to that.

Now stop trying to be JV when you grow up, you're simply not up to the task.

        • @douglasb:

Ooooh errrr - them's fightin' words ROFL.

  • There is still one box left of these pillows at the Salvo's in Ultimo/Glebe (corner Glebe Point Rd and Broadway).
