Shimano Sport/Action Camera $150 from Pushys

90

This is the same price I bought this camera for from Pushys last month when I stacked some discounts.
It's now available for $150 by itself.
Some places are still (attempting) to retail this for over $300!

  • How are you finding your unit?

    • Battery life is my number one issue - only 2 hours of video.
But, I guess that's expected when the thing only weighs 86grams!
For longer rides, I put it in time-lapse mode.

The other negative is the complicated user interface, but if you always carry your phone, you can just use the app anytime you need to change settings.

Other than those 2 things, it works a little treat!

      • How long does it last in time lapse? My Garmin virb didn't save any additional power when in time lapse mode.

        • Depends what interval you've set.
I set 60 second intervals, and it lasted more than 8 hours.

        • @damion:
Ah, just realised that the Shimano unit doesn't have a screen, so that would probably make a difference!

    That price buy a xiaomi

    • Indeed, this only records at 30 frames (@1080p). The Xiaomi records at 60 (as all good action cams should).

    • +5

If you want a gopro clone, sure, the xiaomi is great.
This is more of a niche camera for cycling, that's more aerodynamic and lighter.

Very tempting as an undersaddle 'incident' recorder (depending on its low light performance) but is the GoPro Session likely to drop nearer to $200 soon??

        • +1

I have a fly6 as a rear camera. It has metering optimised for number plates, much longer battery life, automatic loop recording which automatically stops if it goes sideways.
Managed to pick one of those up for about the same price.

      • +1

handy when someone opens the car door on you i guess.

      • This is more of a niche camera for cycling

Ok…Fair enough, point noted. It is the cheapest price out there.

  • I got the gopro session for $193 last month from HN, heaps better me thinks!

    • Have you compared the video quality, in what way is the gopro better?

  • Session is better on all counts except this is more aero and cheaper. I paid $100 more for me session(145-245). The session vid is 150 times better. Is crisper, better low light, better HDR, you name it its better. I dont regret buying this and it is used on rear for commuting. One push start and stop, waterproof. Got a XTI in the mail so this will go on helmet and YI under my arse.

    • I asked this above, but are you saying the gopro is 150 times better than the shimano unit and have you used it. The gopro is quite a lot more, just wondering whether your opinions are from comparisons or just empty statements.

Need a camera asap and be nice to know opinions from experience rather than assumptions.

      • I'm pretty sure 150x better is somewhat of an exaggeration…. Before I bought this, I found some videos of youtube comparing gopro and shimano, but they were from before the session was released.
If you're lucky someone will have done a new comparision with the session.

(Also, latest firmware for shimano enables low-light "high iso")

        • yeah looks like you can also control the Shimano with my bike computer through ant+

          Makes it more interesting

        • @slipperypete: Yeah, if you've got the dura-ace di2 brifters, you can start/stop video or take stills with their spare button.

I've only got ultegra di2, but I bought the d-fly module, so the camera logs gear changes as well as speed/cadence/power to a .csv file on the SD card.

      • Shimano
        Good price

        Gopro session
        Much more durable
Records in AVI (as opposed to MOV)
better accesories, more options for mounting.
Future on going support, firmware updates. hacks.
        higher res Rec

        • AVI vs MOV depends on what editor you prefer.

And Shimano uses all the same gopro mounts, so that's equal as well.

        • Yeah I probably should have specified out of the box accessories.
AVI is a lot more universal than MOV. Not much porn comes in MOV.

      • +2

        I got both. https://www.dropbox.com/s/dvcvybnfswygja6/2016-03-06%2020.32…

Maybe slight exaggeration. 145 times better ;-)

        • In terms of video quality? or just the sizing?

        • Its times like this you know shimano should just stick to making gears and fishing reels and leave being a hero to the pros

        • @captobvious:

It's times like this that I can appreciate companies trying to innovate and keep competition going.

That kind of comment just fits in neatly with all those other similar comments such as “Sony should stick to making TV's and leave the camera business alone”

I'm just glad not everyone thinks like you ;-)

        • @slipperypete: entering a market already heavily saturated with nothing mind blowing or better is not innovation. Perhaps what you meant was diversification but in this case its a lost cause.

Money and resources better spent on Innovation improving gears and reels

Think about it this way. Sony was already in technology making camcorders and electronic products. Cameras are electronics so not far from core business but diverse enough in that industry. You wont see them making bike gears that would be suicide.

Im glad not all companies think like you ;-)

At this price point it is a good buy. Like I said, I dont regret buying mine. Two hours recording in its size, waterproofing, aero. As a package it holds its own. There are better but their form factor is not as good and cost a lot more.

  • Any opinions on this camera vs the Sony HDRAS20 for $118?

  • So, I've spent too long watching youtube videos and reading reviews on both the Shimano and the Sony cameras… and now Pushys has pushed the price up again! It's back to $199.99 :(

  • +1

The Shimano camera is $149 at 99bikes now… plus a little extra off from Cash Rewards. If I get the chance I'll add a deal for the 99bikes sale.

edit - new deal posted for 99bikes, cashrewards brings the price down to $140.66.
