This month, i see NIB are giving away a $150 "The ICONIC" eGift card when you join any combined Hospital + Extras package online

Also a heads up that if you authorize NIB to cancel your current PHI policy with another provider, it will be from the day you join NIB and all limits/waiting periods/claims with be carried forward to your new NIB policy.

Hopefully this will help some OzBargainers

  • What are some of the other offers you have come across recently?

      • Then NIB for $100 eftpos
      • Then HIF $50
      • Then back to NIB for the $100 eftpos again
      • Jumped on today to the iSelect $300 offer
      • I note this is online only but is that a requirement of eligibility? What about nib via I-select and picking up both the $150 and the $300 eftpos cards?

how easy is it to jump from one PHI to another? I'm about to get PHI (just extras though) for the first time. Have you had to restart your waiting periods at all?

    • its in the OP

      • ah thanks. I actually just meant with hopping around in general though - does it get complicated after hopping a few times? I can imagine trying to explain that even though i was with my previous provider for a month, i'd served waiting periods across a bunch of other providers, each being 1 month or so each…
i don't know the system very well, so this might not make much sense haha

Won't work for extras only policy, essentially 95% of offers I've seen (I use to work in health insurance) is always hospital and extras combined policy. You can however take a hospital and extras policy out and cancel either one at any time.

No it doesn't get complicated, the new company will request a clearance certificate to the old company on your behalf - the old company has the info from older companies you were with (which would occur if u jumped around a fair bit).

Companies need to bribe us to take out health insurance? So I get a kickback for taking out insurance with a private company to help me if I'm sick or injured. Bizarre.

    • ive got it for tax purposes. I'd be paying it either way so might as well make use of it :)

      • In essence you pay a private company a fee in order to lower the tax you pay the government

      • huh private health insurance is tax deductible?!

        • To avoid the extra 1% they charge me for not having PHI

Although with reduced/no rebates that may not be so true anymore. Certainly was when it was introduced About 15 years ago. But rates have increased and we get no rebates - health insurance is really quite expensive in Australia, plus often massive gap payments.

    • The company is not there to help you, they are betting on you.

The bet is that you will pay more in premiums (over a lifetime) than you will spend. The kickback is to get you on their books. Speaking of your health, are you seeing clearer now?

  • If only they carried forward your major waiting periods for extras.
