Best Option for Wireless Internet?

We have just moved house into a new townhouse (renting) and as it is brand new it will cost me $300 to get my ADSL2 plan moved.
Being we only have a 12 month lease and I have read that there is a fair bit of congestion in the Hope island area where we are renting I really don't want to fork out $300 so have decided to cancel it and go for wireless.
I've seen Optus has a deal that is $80 for 50gb but it's speed is capped at 12Mbps or 5Mbps depending on the local tower.
We could easily make do with 50gb but I'm concerned the speed will be terrible and don't want to sign up for 12 months to find this out.

Essentially I was thinking of going prepaid and getting a few USB dongles to plug into my old Tiny Dovido? Router I have from my previous wireless days.

Are there any USB dongles that work on all networks?

Any suggestions to get the best bang for buck?

  • Maybe check out vivid. It might be worth getting the line installed and getting on amnet they do unlimited for $50 or 100gb for $30 a month.

    • I've done a walk though the estate and all the neighbours have Bigpond/Telstra WiFi so I'm assuming that it's a Telstra ADSL only estate like our last house.

      • +1

        maybe maybe not
checking adsl2exchanges.com.au will give you an idea

        might be telstra fibre estate

  • vivid wont work at hope island and it was crap in brisbane cbd

hope island isnt all that congested considering theyve installed top hats and new fibre recently for backhaul

if you want a true wireless solution you can go with big air

they aren't cheap but very fast upto 100/100 speeds via point to point antennas

ive got friends on adsl2 in hope island and its been fine for them

telstra 4g is your best bet as optus and Voda towers are useless there

  • Is Beyond ADSL availabe to you? No $300 connection fee.

  • I was in the same dilemma as you a couple of months back. But only that I needed internet for 3.5 months… so needed a contract option, with a minimal connection fee.
Was looking at wireless dongle options, using data plans, etc… I mainly would've used the internet for surfing webpages and that's it.

Ended up going with Belong, and don't regret it one bit. It's been fantastic! Minimal connection fee for the modem, and that's it! If that's an option, it's one you definitely have to explore. Can use data now without a worry, otherwise I would have needed to watch it daily.

  • Is Naked ADSL a viable option without $299 line activation?
Does your townhouse has any phone sockets installed to fit a phone cable?
