Dick Smith - 20% off MiDrone Nano - $15.98

570

This is a great little drone. It is easy to fly and is very robust. I bought it at full price ($19.98) in early February. I thought it was a pretty good deal at that price too.

The user manual is not very good. There are many similar nano drones around and a quick youtube tutorial is all you need to get started.

Here is a youtube tutorial for a similar drone

Does it actually take 1 hour to charge the battery for 5 minute flight?

    • Not unless you use a very low powered charger. My guess would be around 30 mins.

When the battery goes low, the lights on the bottom start to flash. Then you can't do any flips so we plug it in to charge again.

      • How much fly time do you get until the light starts to flash?

        • Around 5 to 8 minutes. It still goes after the low battery warning. Just no more flips

I have various brand nano's , and all of them get more than 5 minutes, more like 8-12 for that battery size in my experience.
Guess it depends how hard you fly it though, in expert mode doing heaps of throttle heavy stuff would definitely shorten flight time.

30-40 minutes is pretty common for charge times on these size batteries (because you never really fully discharge them)

If you are looking for a nano that gets at least as much time in the air as it takes to charge, my Cheerson cx10a plugged into a usb charger from my nexus 7 tablet takes about 10 minutes to charge and lasts around that long in the air on that charge. (up to around 150 charge/discharge cycles so far with no issues)

  • Worth the money?

  • would this be able to carry a gopro?

    • +15

im kinda curious as to how many worthless dicksmith giftcards it can carry :D

      • +3

I don't understand how not accepting those gift cards is not viewed as a form of theft….

        • +4

It would be theft if the original owners decided to refuse to accept the cards, but the ownership has transferred to the receivers who have special powers to liquidate the business. I think gift card holders are on the lowest rung of the creditors.

          @DPS:
          Correct DPS

          Quite an ignorant post, Iac0449.

          @DPS:

Classed as 'unsecured creditors' from memory.

Basically they work through all the money owing, and categorise/prioritise repayments. Normally things like staff salary and leave entitlements are higher on that list.

    • Yep, and deliver pizzas to my room. Awesome!

    • No. It can only lift it's own weight.

These are about palm size, so no gopro :) Was just at Morley WA and they had about 10 there but I didn't get one. A few of the small 2.4GHZ remote toys were also there, a copter about the same size as this and a couple of types of indoor/outdoor copters as well. More people in there today than I've seen in a long time!

Might wait til DSE are forced to start giving their crap away…

    • +1

Yep I'm just camping till they mark it down to the sweet spot! 20% …. 40% … 60% … 80% off then charge in there when they start giving freebies.

      • +2

By that point the staff would have taken all the good stuff :(

        • +1

They better be careful, they won't have jobs soon, so they should watch what the try and scalp…

  • +5

All these 20% off at DSE still mean rip off price for most stuff tbh..

One year return to store warranty. :)

  • How does this compare to the dji?

  • Don't waste your money folks. Bought one this morning and within 5 minutes one propeller became stuck. After changing the blade (4 replacement blades are included) the unit is no longer able to take off. Going to get a replacement for it later today but wish I hadn't bought it now.

    • +6

Are you sure you used the correct propeller? They're not all the same.

      • +1

Good point actually. Had a quick look and the wrong propeller was on. It's charging now so will report back. Thanks for the tip!

        • +1

Quick blade change and full charge and it's working again!

I still don't recommend it though as it seems too flimsy. On 2 occasions when the unit crashed, it went haywire and the blades went full blast and wouldn't respond to controls. It is fun when it works though.

will be a good little quad to learn how to fly before moving on to bigger quads like these ones..

    https://www.multirotorshop.com.au/

  • just got one and realized how hard it is to fly one of these things if you have never done it before…crashed it 3 times within 30 seconds (first on the floor, second behind the desktop and third behind the refrigerator!!!..yes the ref!!!) ….will practicing on this indeed before I spend on a good one…

    • My kid couldn't even get it off the ground for the first days. After calibrating it and getting his head around the controls he is flying it well. We took it to the park and it was good fun. The range wasn't that great but any further and you wouldn't be able to say which direction it was pointing at.

  • Should it go straight up when you give it some throttle? Mine is shooting to one side immediately :(

Never mind, need to calibrate it :)

However, every now and again it looses connection and goes haywire :(

  • Save your money.

I've been through two of these. Interspire brand MiDrone Nanos.

First one, the motor jammed after about 5 minutes of flight. Never spun freely again.

Then took 3 weeks to geta replacement. First I had to send back the dud at my own expense (postage never refunded). 3 weeks later when the replacement finally arrived, it won't even take off! Fully charged several times, read and reread the poorly translated instruction manual, done all the calibrations I could over and over again. It just flips over and spins on the ground. No matter what I do I can't get it airborne.

Wondering if I now waste another $10 sending it back for yet another replacement.

    I would stay clear.

20 bucks at DS means worth about ten bucks max. Probably not going to be very good. I'm going to splash out and get the udi u839.

  • WORD OF CAUTION

These drones are really Crappy c7499¥

/Mine lasted for literally 5 minutes

/Its the size of one 2 two 50¢ coins side to side

/I returned mine for the Micopter which is better value in my opinion

  • same thing happened to me, after 10 mins (2 charges), one propeller is simply not working anymore…so it cannot take off….

  • To everyone complaining that theirs is broken:
Did you have a crash that resulted in it not working? Not talking about how it should be durable enough to survive, just, did it crash?

    • No, no crashes. It was straight out of the box.
Full recharge and several attempts at calibration/trimming etc. Can't even get it off the ground.

      • Well same disappointment at my end as well. Never took of as in any of the plethora of videos nor even able to get to calibrate based on some of those. Has anyone has idea whether a refund on this is possible!!!

    • Yes I had a crash on carpet before one propeller just stopped working

  • I skipped this and got the Target one that werty98 posted:
    https://www.target.com.au/p/remote-control-quad-copter/57527…

It flies well, no trim needed for it to hover relatively steady out of the box.
Yaw rate is good enough, flies much like the Syma X12S I had.
3 sensitivity settings, good for first time beginners (please learn outside with no wind on grass to minimise chance of breakage) and more experienced fliers - the third one makes the little quad quite zippy.

Recommend getting it from Target just so you can have a go at getting it swapped under warranty when you inevitably break it. I think we'll have a much higher chance at pulling that off if you just burn out a motor instead of demolishing the guards, etc.

  • I have now moved to expert level. I practiced throwing it like a frisbee and gaining control of it before it hits the ground.

  • got one today, straight out of the box, one screw is missing and one propeller doesn't work
