Where to Buy Samsung Galaxy S7 upon Release?

Hi need a buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 for my old man. No need for comments that it's expensive or not worth it, etc. etc.

I know it's not released yet but he wants it ASAP or by late March at the latest to claim the TRS.

Can you get Samsung phones at a discount from an Australian store within a few weeks of release?

If not, I'll pre-order it and get a free Gear VR headset.

  • Make sure you get the VR set plus try to walk in to Vodafone/Telstra/Optus/Virgin shop, and do the haggle. You may get better price or better data etc compare to their online prices.

I would do online chat too, see if they can reduce a price for early birds

    • Do the haggle in store before the release date?

I'd be very surprised if you are able to haggle at all. Generally the only opportunity to haggle is when dealing with retentions, not new connections or upgrades.

Not even released yet and you want a discount?

That's why I'm posting on OzBargain!

Ditto, I just logged on to post the same, I got a pre-order email from Samsung, for a minute I thought I was special..lol

Then I discovered that the price for a 32gb (only option) is $1148.95 and Edge is $1249.05, really? Sorry, no thanks.

I'm pretty sure that's the same price when the S6 and S6 Edge were released.

        • $79 for the std S7 ($86 for the edge) on the cheapest Telstra plan for 2 years and free VR if your quick is probably not a bad deal compared to all the other options at the moment.

  • Been trying to purchase for an hour now, all I get is links doing nothing and the occasional "LOGIN PROCESS IS IN PROCESS" error message…

  • I can't add the LED case (or any case) to my pre-order. I can get as far as the Paypal/credit card page, but there's no option to add a case, so I bailed out.

I just called Samsung and one of the support staff tried it from his end and had the same problem. He said I'd have to call back during business hours to talk to the Sales staff as there was nothing else he could do.

    DSE?

    I'll show myself out :P

    • Don't worry, DSE staff will see themselves out by the release date.

  • I was all excited about the pre order, looked at the Telstra specs, and no blue tick, so back to work out what else I like now. :(

    • Ah…maybe it's because the S7 that Samsung releases in most international markets uses their own Exynos 8890 chip, which apparently does not support CDMA. The S7 released in the USA (and parts of China) uses a Qualcomm 820 chip. Apparently the Qualcomm version is specifically for CDMA-heavy markets.

If you really wanted an S7, you could look into sourcing an unlocked Qualcomm version from the US or (perhaps easier) from China?

Here's an article mentioning the Qualcomm is for CDMA markets. The article mentions the phone model numbers as well, so I wonder if you might have any luck with grey importers like Kogan stocking the Qualcomm Chinese version.

All this is assuming the only problem re Telstra is the CDMA issue.

      • All good now, seems after testing, they both got the blue tick.

  • Actually, I will just pre-order it and then claim it on the Citibank Guaranteed Pricing Scheme.

Unlike Apple, surely it will be cheaper 60 days after release.

    Here are the conditions.

Guaranteed Pricing Scheme reimburses you for the difference in price, up to $500, between a covered product you have purchased on your card and the same covered product advertised in a store catalogue.
We cover you for the difference in price, up to $500, between the price of a covered product and the purchase price of the same item advertised
in a store catalogue that is produced after you purchase the covered product, provided that:

the cheaper covered product is available from a store within a 25 kilometre radius of the store where you purchased the covered
    product;

This cover section does not apply to covered products purchased or advertised exclusively on the internet.

    (I've removed some irrelevant T&Cs)

Now never having claimed the price protection before, I'm a little concerned if I purchase it directly from Samsung, as I didn't purchase from a store and via the internet(however it's not exclusively on the internet).

Would I be better off pre-ordering it from a Bricks and Mortar store (to claim the Guaranteed Pricing Scheme) and forget about the bonus VR Headset? We're not going to use the VR headset, but probably sell it.

I've just been to the Samsung store in Sydney and they told me that if you preorder, you can trade in an s4 or s5 for $400. It has to be Australian stock and in working condition. I think they check it out before giving you the credit.

  • I'm just going to get mine from Kogan, I dont need the VR headset so I'll save myself $150.

    • I think the Australian warranty is worth the extra $150.

      • Tru, but Kogan Warranty is good too :D

Getting off BecexTech is also another option that gives you 'Standard Australian Warranty'

        • Kogan and BecexTech are both charging Australian RRP without the headset? You'd be better off preordering from JB Hifi and getting the VR Headset and Australian warranty (dunno where you got the idea that Kogan's warranty is good).

        • Having a look at T-Dimension rn, I've had 2 bad experience with them where they were out of stock. However considering the release of the S7 I doubt they will be out of stock. Its $840 or $970 if you go for the S7 Edge.

Just wandering what does Samsung warranty cover, and if I do decide to get my phone fixed through Samsung rather than a 3rd party will it be any cheaper if I've had warranty with them.

  • Ended up buying 2 from EBay/TGG 20% off promotion. One for myself also.

So $1,150 less 20% disc, less $105 GST refund, less $15 Cash Rewards = bang on $800 if you're traveling.

Oddly enough, those opportunistic scumbags at Kogan are selling grey market S7's for more than Aust RRP on EBay due to the 20% promotion.
