      Cleaning injectors…

Right on the product page link above:

Helps to eliminate hard starting, rough running, flat spots on acceleration & poor performance

It all sounds promising doesn't it?

        • +2

Automotive manufactures specify injector cleaner at regular intervals as its part of normal maintenance and it will prolong/prevent the need for them to be replace or removed and ultrasonically cleaned.

A clean injector will produce a fine mist of fuel which will all be ignited, a dirty injector will produce streams of fuel which can't all be burnt and will lead to the symptoms posted before.

You sound like "don't change the oil in your car, what a scam!!!"

          @ezarc:

However, not important enough to include in their log book service.

This bottle, will do absolutely nothing.

Speak to the RAC or an honest mechanic.

This service is the most profitable for all service centres.

@ilostnemo: I am a mechanic and I have pulled injectors out of many cars and put them on a flow bench and what I have seen I am surprised many cars still ran.
I will put the injectors in a ultrasonic bath and then replace the filters and the car will run brand new again. I don't see the harm in this stuff

        • @porsche804:

Sounds like what a good mechanic would do. Do you only service Porsches??

        • @KaptnKaos: Monday to Friday Porsches, Saturday - Sunday: everything else

      Nothing really.
Problem #1: for everyday use your fuel injectors in your whatever-old-crappy-car are just fine, even though the rest of the car is falling apart
Problem #2: to actually clean them properly, as in see any difference, you'd have to remove them and soak them in harsh chemicals. A little sprinkle in a tank of gas does nothing to the stubborn deposits.

Although spending $3.5 on your car makes you feel good and would think "Now the injectors are clean, so much better" so psychologically it helps a lot.

      • basically, this stuff is just a diesel solution, it is an old mechanic trick to add a ltr of diesel to a tank and that helps lubricate inside of the injectors and helps clean the injector a little bit, when I was working at Volkswagen for many years injector cleaner was added to all cars and it was VW own product that we were adding to all the fuel tanks. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2798/4474528841_3cd1b4f15f.jp…

  • Yeah I've often wondered if this stuff does anything or is just snake oil?

  • I normally run my car on normal unleaded but every now and then I put in 95 and maybe every year 98 for the same reason.

  • Is this the same sort of 'additives' you find in 95/98RON petrol?

If someone runs premium in their car constantly, then I take it this isn't required?

Cleaning injectors is definitely something that should be done, I work with a client that makes products to get the headers clean and results can be something like 20%+ fuel efficiency. But whether this product cleans as advertised is a whole differenct issue.

According to this video from Fifth Gear. This type of thing does work.

  • Don't know what current practice is but many petrol companies used to have cleaning additives in their products. Shell used it across their range at one stage. Is this stuff necessary? Probably not but stick to the known brands and an occasional capful per tank might help (tests show some can in certain circumstances). This nulon PIC at 150ml does "one tank" whereas others will do many tanks and because you might only use it occasionally will therefore last quite a while. Note - some people advise against these products being used on new or recently recon'd motors. Google and read the small print before buying. Seems an expensive option to me.

  • My Lexus RX350 has now done 300,000 KM in 7 years (~ 40,000 KM per year). Never had injectors cleaned. Serviced by local mechanic (not over priced dealer service). Fuel economy now is the same as it was when new between 9.4 - 9.6 KM/L highway cycle

I would bet my full tool set that if the injectors were pulled out and put on a flow bench the injectors would be spraying like an old drunk man with a urinary track infection.
The thing with cars is that they usually get worse over time so you don't notice like a lobster in a slowly boiling pot of water but once the car is fixed in would be like chalk and cheese
