    80MB/s read speed

    • You can bet that the write speed will be a fraction of the read speed. Definitely no good to use in devices such as the GoPro.

If you want fast writes also then you'll need to upgrade to the Extreme Pro model.

      • +1

Thrift ran this test on the 64GB model some months ago. Looks impressive.

        • I bought from your last deal (shopping express). My card says 58GB in crystalmark (thrifts said 59GB) Write speed close to 20MB/s.

          Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 76.233 MB/s
          Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 19.006 MB/s

          @ChurchMouth:

Which is likely limited to a USB 2.0 interface.

        • +1

          @not a bargain:
Sorry for not searching myself - does USB2.0 have a write limitation? I am getting 76 MB/s in the other direction.

        • @ChurchMouth:

Ok, well clearly the interface isn't the limitation. Not sure what is causing it then.

      • About 1/4. So I would set this at 20 kB/s

        • +2

I think you mean 20 MB/s. 20 kB/s would be slower than an old floppy disk.

      • You don't need Extreme Pro for GoPro.
For Full HD recording, this Ultra may be able to handle it, or choose the faster Extreme for safer bet.
For 4K recording, the Extreme Plus should be fine too

        • +1

          From my own tests: http://imgur.com/7S5fTtK
Using an external USB 3 card reader attached to a PC running Windows 10.

I agree entirely with edfoo. Ultra should be able to handle it, though Extreme is a safer bet. Bear in mind that older Extreme's may not be rated to a faster speed than newer Ultra's.

I've used both 48MB/s and 80MB/s Ultra cards (32gb/48MBs and 64gb/80MBs) in my GoPro session without issue.

GoPro has the following page which shows the maximum speed required being 60Mbps (megabits per second-mb/s, not megabytes per second-MB/s): https://gopro.com/support/articles/hero4-black-recording-tim…

Any card which has sustained write speeds above 60mbps will be sufficient.

        • @camreeves: Just to be doubly clear to everyone, these are Mbps (Megabits per second), NOT MBps (MegaBytes per second)
          i.e. 60Mbps = 7.5MBps

These Ultras write in the range of 20MBps (160Mbps)

        • @ozdavo:

          feels like a scam

        • @ozdavo: Not sure who specifically you are referring to, but the packaging is MBps (megabytes) and my own tests show write speeds up to 80MBps.

        • +1

@camreeves: correct, sorry if I wasn't clear but my reference was to your point that a gopro can record at up to 60Mbps (7.5MBps),which is below what these cards can record ~160Mbps (20MBps)

      • How about for dashcams? Would this be suitably fast at writing/have a decent lifespan? (For 1080p recording that is.)

        • Generally the Samsung are said to work better in some of cheaper Chinese dash cams. Can't comment on the brand name ones.

  • +4

really need deals on better cards, ie. cards with faster write speeds. Can you help us out with a deal on some 64GB/128GB U3 micro sd cards?

  • Thanks for finding us these deals TA :)

  • -1

Hey TA love your work, but have way too many micro for now. Was wondering if they'll be deal on SD cards soon? Thanks for all your work.

    • +1

Why not just purchase a bunch of the cheapie adapters?

    • +1

This deal IS an sd card if you use the free adapter that comes along!

      • Noob question. Does it work the same as a regular sd? Or would it lose speeds etc?

        • -1

          yep, according to google :)

        • Technically it should work up to the speeds advertised, but this limitation is for full sized sd cards as well. In my experience, there is NO difference. I have a couple of microsds and they work just fine as sd cards. Added advantage that I can throw them into the phone if/when I require.

        • +1

          Same speed.

That's because the adaptor is just some strips of metal that are wider on the SD end, and thinner on the microsd end. There is no circuitry in the adaptor whatsoever.

  • Is there any downside to using something like this with the SD adapter as a bit of extra storage for a laptop (macbook air) with only a 250gb SSD?

    • the slow write speed would be one

      • Is there any downside to using a microSD + adapter vs a full-sized SD card in a laptop?

        • You might misplace the microSD adapter.

        • +1

stands there unable to speak, nodding head

Now that I've recovered, the answer is no. See above.

        • @alvian:

ive lost all of my adapters ive had so far :(

    • Might be number of write cycles ot supports …..but if it's mainly read only speed is the only limit ….not just of the card but cpu to read off SD slot.

  • Thanks, was looking to get one for my mum's phone.

  • Can be used for gopro session ?

    • +1

I use both 48MB/s and 80MB/s Sandisk Ultra Micro SD cards in a GoPro Session without issue.

      • But is it any good?

        • +1

It records video's and does time lapses - I'm not sure what else it needs to do?

  • Bugger, paid $31.90 last week for same 64GB card from same site ;-(

A good use for anyone with a $25 Amaysim eBay voucher before it expires on 29th. That's why I bought last week.

    • +1

That's how it is. Happens to everyone.

The important thing is, were you happy with the price you paid at the time? If so, you can't complain.

      • -1

lostn - our Philosopher of Seriousness (& taking comments far to literally) in Residence on Ozbargain.

Gee I never looked at it like that ;-) I don't think anyone has made that insightful comment before…

Complain - not me. Didn't you see how upset I am by my use of ;-( in my comment?

I posted the comment to point out it's
even a better deal now, saving $3 over last week's great price from PC Byte‘s eBay store.
And a great opportunity for those with the $25 eBay vouchers.

        • -1

Then don't be sad enough to use ;-(.

The 'great opportunity' part gets lost easily when you make comments like that.

Sounded like a complaint to me. Anyone who paid more for something a week ago should get over it. What was the point in even mentioning it if not looking for sympathy?

There's really no need to point out that it was cheaper than a previous price. It should be bleeding obvious. If it wasn't cheaper, either no one would post the deal in the first place, or someone will neg it for being more expensive than before.

        • @lostn:
The normal PC Byte selling price was not listed in the deal - until I gave it. It's a handy piece of information to confirm its a real deal.

People do post deals at the normal selling price…
That $31.90/31.50 (regularly are 2 listings prices at PC Byte, found I bought at $31.50) I gave was seen as good enough for its own subsequent deal at PC Byte with 55 + votes. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236658 It's been selling at that price for the many weeks I followed it, but dropped to an even better price in this deal.

The wink in the emoji is always the give away that comments are not to be taken that seriously :-) But there can always be misunderstandings with any comment.

No one starts a serious complaint with the word "Bugger" - now used in the not at all serious sense after being the catch word in a well known humorous advertising campaign by Toyota ;-)

I think you mistakenly went straight to 'I must show my dislike for anyone complaining about buying before the deal at a higher price' mode without thinking. (We all hate those comments & it's often complained about here - thats why I said it in a mocking / sarcastic sense.)

I used OzBargain bold gold to help the linked suggestion stand out. I would have used it without my comment on the normal selling price as it is hard to stand out in a popular deal.

Must be a bugger being that serious. It gave me a good laugh :-)

  • any good for goPro?

  • Are these good enough for a standard dash cam?

  • I have this card in my xperia z2 and I can record 4k perfect I can take burst shots easy to it can handle it all!
My older Samsung I could not record straight to SD card it would lag bad even on full HD and that was an evo 48mbps read.

  • Got this off ebay today for 30 dollars anyone know if any good for videos with dslr?

    ebay.com.au/itm/SANDISK-Extreme-32GB-SD-SDHC-Memory-Card-Class-10-UHS-3-90MB-s-600X-32G-U3-HD-4K-/281095894846?nav=SEARCH

  • So last weeks U3 that I bought from PCByte, is the write speed faster than these? It says 60 read and 40 write on packaging.
I bought a Samsung Evo the week before, how does it write speed compare?

My cursory glance at the packaging seems to only mention the transfer speed. U1 48MB/s for the Samsung and U3 40MB/s for the Extreme.
    I'm getting confused now.

I'm aiming to get good cards but the mentioned U1 80MB/s is throwing me a curve ball.

    • +3

U3 is rated to a higher minimum write speed (30MB/s) than U1 which is only rated to 10MB/s. U3 is targeted at 4K video recording.

Comparing write speeds on the packaging is prone to marketing spiel and should be taken with a grain of salt. If you are concerned about read/write speeds, then test for yourself in the real world.

A 'good' card goes beyond write speed and would take into consideration write life cycles, warranty (extreme is lifetime, ultra is normally 10 years) and MTBF. Realistically, most people will be replacing memory cards based on price well before their useful working life is exhausted.

Ozbargainers just replace them when the next best price comes out :)

      • Thank you. Load off my mind.

        I should be ok then.

I simply wanted something not going to slow down my Nikon D7000 camera and I don't do video (so far). The extreme should be fine I'm thinking.

The Evo is only to put maps on for my Garmin Edge, so I think I'm good to go for now.

        Appreciate the heads up

  • +3

I feel I need to buy a GoPro so I can take advantage of these MicroSD deals.

  • Judging from the test result, are these cards better than SanDisk 32GB Extreme micro SDHC 60MB/s U3 Memory Card (http://pcbyte.com.au/index.php/sandisk-32gb-extreme-micro-sd…)?

    • the write speed is a lot different though.

      • according to the test, these cards write for 50-ish MB/s while the SanDisk 32 GB Extreme is up to 60MB/s? Its not that different it seems?

  • +1

Any deal on 128 gb models ta?

  • Any concerns that these are fake sandisk micro sd cards? On the ebay page there is one 2 star review claiming they are fake.

    • +2

I am disappointed that I have purchased this pathetic piece of plastic and hope that I will be reimbursed ASAP.

      It deserves no rating.

… and promptly gave 2 stars. It does not make sense. PCByte would not have received 99.9% positive feedback if it sells fakes.

    • I've bought fakes off ebay before I knew about them,(that was a shitty lesson - I lost hundreds of holiday pictures). I now test all cards I buy, and I have bought cards off pcbyte before and tested them and they were genuine.

  • I've tested both the SanDisk Ultra 16GB and Samsung EVO 16GB via a USB/MicroSD reader on my PC with a 570MB linux ISO.

Both have the same slow speed.

    Read speed is (21.5MB/s)
    Write speed is (12.5MB/s}.

    • What was the speed of your card reader? Was it a USB 3.0 interface card reader?

      • With a Sandisk USB 2.0 card reader and Sandisk SD adaptor with same results.

        • that is probably the bottleneck.

        • There's your problem right there. Try a USB 3.0 card reader.

        • I don't have a USB 3.0 card reader with me, but even a USB 2.0 is fast enough to test these cards with the transfer rate of 480Mbps/60MBps.

        • +1

@PW: that's the theoretical USB2.0 maximum, but there are a lot of things that affect USB speeds. Host controller speed, OS caching, etc. Internet people report their USB2.0 card reader speeds in the 20-45 MB/s range.

More importantly is the SD bus speed. If your card reader does not support UHS-I (max 104 MB/s), your speeds will be noticeably limited using the High Speed (max 25 MB/s) or 'normal' (max 12.5 MB/s) interface.

    • try it more with normal files (lots of photo/music sized) rather than one large file.

      • Smaller files are slower speed down to 8-10MB/s.

        • thanks, I was wondering.

  • Thanks, picked one up for my $183 Gopro Session 4.

    • I am also after one for the Gopro Session. Did you get the 32GB or 64GB? If I use it do continuously film for the 2 hours (max battery life), will it fill up the memory card if I get the 32 GB?

      • +2

32gb. I'm not rad for any longer than 2 hours at a time.

        • do you know if the 32GB will be sufficient for 2 hours worth of footage?

        • +1

@first in line: By my calculations you shouldn't exceed 32GB in a single recording session with a HERO4 Session derived from these specs (half all times for 32GB @ 1440-30 or 1080-60)

        • @muncan:

          Thanks for calculating.

  • I don't get it. I thought all memory cards were generally the same thing.

    • Superficially, they are.

  • Thought I would just add my 2 cents. These cards are good for some things but in my Nikon d7200 the difference between this and the Sandisk extreme pro is night and day, once the buffer is full it makes a big difference. When spending that much on a camera go the extra step and get decent cards. Just wish that they would come on special ;) hint hint

  • anyone got a good deal for 32GB SD cards at the moment.
want one for our camera, not a slow one but mid range write speed would be nice.

    • you can use this one with an adapter provided.

      • Already doing that and it's slower than a real sd card. Ultra micro sd, spec show faster than the sd card we have but is slower in camera writes.

  • bargain, I have bought straight from their store for a few dollars more. The 32GB is fast and great for photos and 4k recording on my sony z5.

  • Recently bought a G1W-C dash cam.
Is this suitable for that? 32GB is probably enough?

    • Says it only supports up to 32GB in your link.

For day to day use, it should be ok as it'll continuously loop.

  • Thanks for that TA, I was looking to get a 64g for my tablet. Also Kudos to pc byte, I messed up the order and they fixed it for me no hassles.

  • Hi guys, by default they send this card via normal post( no tracking/sign)? Or courier?
