I've got the KDL55W800B and am very stoked with it. Wasn't as cheap as that though! Fantastic TV for gaming. The only thing I don't like is Sony's proprietary OS…… But this doesn't have it.

    • 800B has better input lag than 800C.

      • +1

The Sony Proprietary OS is more stable than the current Android TV and the old model has better input lag as already mentioned.
The Android OS doesn't even support recording at this stage (unless they have added it recently)
Edit: Looks like they have added recording.

      • 700C and 700B (they are the same TV) both have better input lag than 800B and 800C, thanks to no android etc.

  • +1

so very tempting - but as with all Sony's 1) it's Sony, the king of releasing products with great features but then remove/hobble said features 2) Android TV seems very buggy and troublesome (Whirlpool forums) 3) no hard power switch (are there any modern tvs with?) but 20W standby!?! with long boot times if it is powered down. BUT Sony do have the best picture quality and awesome upsampling, for both FHD and UHD. Wish they were still making dumb tvs. Decisions, decisions, decisions…

    • +1

I have the w800b too. And yes, It's pretty damn good. But I agree, I wish they were still making dumb TVs because my old dumb Samsung plasma with media player capability is the bees knees. I regularly !@#$!^)&* at the Sony because something is sluggish or something isn't working like it's supposed to, and anytime I need one of the 'smart' features, I can just plug my laptop in. The Sammy on the other hand, might not have the same resolution (but it's colours and darks and awesome) JUST WORKS!

    • +1

I have the 50W800C. Your comments are fairly spot on. I would take the Whirlpool comments with a pinch of salt. I've had no problems with the android TV. However, there are things that annoy me with such an expensive unit. E.g. the bluetooth is only one way. You cannot cannot bluetooth headphones to the TV and listen to things.

It doesn't read NTSF hard disks.

The guide is horrible, slow and does not load up for channels that are not tuned into.

      It doesn't get very bright.

Colours distort when not viewing straight on. I.e. at angles.

However, picture quality is excellent, especially once you use the picture and colour settings given by the rtings website.

    • 20W standby? Wow that's ridiculous, I hope this isn't a trend with modern TVs. Does it not ever go to sleep? My old Sony from 2010 uses about 1.2W on standby (measured with the PowerMate meter).

    • Can one buy a powerboard with a master switch set to a dvd player and the tv connected as the slave?

      • +1

certainly! I have a few of these from a previous deal - not remote though. The Android TV just takes a bit longer to start, try it instore before purchase.

  • Possible pricematch at Good Guys and get their refund of 120% price diff? At $1096, that 20% is about $50 off from that price.

  • +2

I got one of these last year from HN for about $1400. It's a nice TV. They've updated the Android OS a number of times adding in new features each time, the latest of which added support for recording to a USB stick/hard drive. If you have something like Plex then you can get the app for the TV which we use daily. The Android TV remote app you can get it really handy too for when you misplace the remote (or can't be bothered to get up for it).

  • Just bought this at HN last week from a store credit.. Tv is so thin and light.. I bought ssg5100gb samsung for my 3d glasses as it cost me $29 compared to $49 sony bt500a 3d glasses..

    • could you tell me howz the brightness level and 3d experience so far… read about issues with brightness levels and 3d flickering.. any comments from the owner of this tv…thnx

  • This or OLED?

    • +6

There aren't any OLED TV's for this price.

  • Bought this from TGG eBay late last year.
Good picture quality, android tv is nice, but sometimes it takes long to respond(typical android thing)
Very slim, but hate the external power adapter…

  • +4

Would have bought, but my 7 year old Samsung LN46A850 just won't figgin' die.

    • My Pana 42PX70A is still going after more than 8 years, has been on most hours of the day since purchase. Still great picture!

  • Can't see any good deals for FHD TV now at 60-65" now.

Sony don't make that size anymore ?

  • if i buy one from a store will it fit in my Mazda 6 sedan?

    • +1

Do you have a tape measure??

    • +24

      Recommend a lounge room.

    • +2

I got mine in my Camry, reckon I could have pushed to a 60inch. I'm sure a sales person would take the challenge if it meant a sale!

    • +1

I just measured the box and it is approx. 1310x820x170mm. It fit fairly easily into my Holden Cruze with the back seats down

  • Thanks mate…Might pick one up for the mother.

  • Guy at Sony store said android is speed/responsiveness can be impacted by slow internet speed. Can't seem to verify this. Thanks for posting in advance OP.

    • +2

      Internet speed,
      Memory,
      Bad OS code,
      Can be any thing.
My worry, will it get slower just like your phone after few updates.
Edit: its only around $1000, update it like a phone after few years :)

      • True. And really no need for 3D of any kind. Surely there's still some premium for that in this price.

yeh the connections on a sony can't be beat …. should be a minimum though for tvs these days

  • I paid $1160 for this only a few days ago. I'm disappointed with myself

    • +1

Where from, might be a price guarantee with the retailer?

      • Harvey Norman (bought online, picked up from my local store)

I just searched and looks like they DO have a price match guarantee. I'm guessing that it's a bit of a struggle to get them to honour it though? Especially when they already have my money

        • Mate did it for something else he bought at HN and got a credit voucher. Bought mine from HN last Thursday and I'll be contacting them first thing Thursday morning when the brochure goes live.

        • +1

          @Captain Pineapple:

I'll be doing the same thing then. Store credit is better than nothing

        • +1

@Matt89: $89 refund back on to my credit card…

        • @Captain Pineapple:

Great result! Did you just have to ring the HN contact number (02 9763 6891) and tell them about JB's price?

        • +1

@Matt89: I just hopped online and spoke to one of their online chat consultants. Gave them the invoice # and the link to the TV deal from JB website. She took care of the rest. I'm sure you could do it in store.

        • +1

I did the same and got my refund a few days ago

    • Some credit cards offer guratee pricing scheme

    • could you please tell me about your experience with the tv so far… especially with brightness levels and 3d flickering if you experienced any ?

  • +1

I bought this TV from the Bing Lee/Ebay deal for $1030 last month, very happy.

  • Guys I just bought the 50 inch model for the same tv but i havent collected it yet. Do you reckon i can instead pick the 55" and get harvey norman to price match?

    • Can always ask, but not easy with HN? btw how much did you pay for it?

    • Yeah man, just collect it and return it then get them to price match the 55" model.

I'll be going to The Good Guys to get mine and sending a price match claim to get back 120% off of the price difference.

      • But why collect it. Can I not ask them to price match before I collect it, telling them that I want to buy the 55" model instead?

        • Speaking of previous experience with HN, they would have to cancel the order first and make a new invoice, pick out the stock from the back etc.

Though I'm not exactly sure if all stores follow the same procedure. Just go with your heart, tell them you want to exchange it with the model up and price match it with JB, I'm sure there won't be any problems.

  • I like to use TV as computer display some times, and for high res photos etc. is it worth going UHD? Don't worry their is not much video content etc.

  • I don't have access to the JB catalogue and am in the market for a 32-40 inch TV. Anyone know if anything in that size is on sale as part of this upcoming catalogue? Did a quick search online for the catalogue, but couldn't find the upcoming one.

  • -2

Somehow th deal link goes to the same TV model with a price tag of AUD 1346. Where are we getting AUD 1096 price ?

    • +1

Read the OPs post. Starts on 25th

  • Hmm, was eyeing off the 4K Sony KD55X8500C TV but now this alot cheaper .. Would you think a $600 upgrade for 4K is pointless at this screen size?

    • I am in the same position. Deciding to go with this for now.

If you have the space for a 65" inch screen then go for a UHD model. For a 55" screen, UHD is not worth it IMO.

also I would use this for 3-4 years until OLED is mainstream and cheaper. So don't want to over spend now

    • Do you have any 4k content?

      • None and thats another reason to defer buying a UD/OLED for 3-4 years

      • Yeah no 4K content really, but I sort of got sucked into buying a 720p TV back when 1080p was the new (expensive) thing and kinda regretted it once 1080 became the norm. But I think it's a little different with 4K.

        • Most cable, free to air and movies are 720p. Only proper Blu-ray are 1080p

  • I got this recently too. The Android TV functionality makes it definitely the most versatile smart TV there is.

  • +2

Nice! Cheaper than a high-end smartphone, though less convenient to carry around, and has no battery anyway.

I fully expect smartphones to be this size in the near future, though. They're heading that way.

  • Extra 7% off JB vouchers thru work for me.. makes this around $1023. Tempting!

    • How do you get 7%?

      • Just a work perk. I can access a whole heap of gift vouchers at discounted prices.

        • Me too except it's 6% :-/

  • Assuming u got catalog in the post?
Can you send the full page? Thnx

  • How is the Screen resolution? Is it clear?

  • +1

Anyone know if you can get $1000 JB Hi-Fi gift cards at Woolies/Coles?

  • online catalog has been updated, every one can click and view the sale price now.

  • Bought this TV from the Good Guys last week; they had reduced the price to $1185 to match the Harvey Norman deal. Claimed their 120% price guarantee this morning and it was approved this afternoon.

    • how much they refund?

      • +1

        Should be $108.60.

The amusing thing is that I phoned the store before I went asking for a price beat on the Harvey Norman deal. When I arrived they had reduced the ticket price to match HN and I couldn't be bothered to ask for the extra dollar off which they had offered me (At this point I expect to be stripped of my OZB badge). A few days later the J&B deal comes up and I successfully claim. Here is the clincher - the Good Guys price guarantee does not apply to price beats (At this point I expect my OZB badge to be returned).

  • It was mentioned above that the lag of this model was a little worse then the previous model, but how is it in the grand scheme of things? Is 30ms still considered pretty good? Only 1 frame at 30ps and two at 60fps.

Are there any other TVs of similar quality and price that have less lag?
Or is this one of the better options overall for a 1080p 55" TV for equal parts movies/TV/gaming?

    • The 48W700C has the best input lag of any TV at the moment, around 15ms input lag. It has great input lag because it doesn't use android, 700C is actually a rebadged 700B, aka previous model, 48W700C is the way to go if your a serious gamer.

  • Not sure to jump on this now or wait for a Dick Smith fire sale.

    • You've got 13 days left to decide. Plenty of stock as Harvey Norman and good guy selling them at similar price

  • Also Video Pro is matching and offer free shipping ("to most areas").

I picked one up from JB last night. Got it home and noticed a footprint on the box. Opened it up to find the screen bent and cracked. Looks like someone thought it would be a good idea to use it as a step in the warehouse. Exchanging it though was no problem (though it meant packing it all back up and driving all the way back to the store again).

And now the new one is great, though it won't let me sign in with my google account for some reason. Just keeps saying my login details are incorrect. So it's a bit so-so thus far I guess … If I can't login to my google account I don't know how usable the rest of the smart TV features will be. I think you have to be logged in to use most of them. Might have to create a new account and lose all my apps etc.

    • Sounds like you are typing something wrong. Test your Google Login details by logging out of Google completely on a PC and try the same login details. Once you get it right on the computer it will work on the tv. Had the same issue with someone recently who had forgotten they had updated their Google password in recent times but forgot about it because they were using auto login and not having to type it.

      • +1

Nah my details were correct. Turns out for some reason I had to log in to the androidTV website and authorize my login details to be used on the TV before I could log in on the TV or some BS .. seriously why is that even a thing. Anyway, all sorted.

  • what's the best price so far as all major retailers selling it for the same price.. any more bargains on this one ?

    • +1
      • thanks .. but wondering how long will it take to receive message for pick up if we select click n collect..

        • Really depends on how busy they are, but usually around 1-3 days.

        • will see tomorrow if I get any good deal in store as well .. Harvey norman , The good guys and JBhifi ( all having same price)…

  • btw any idea if it fits in ford falcon..

    • Don't know if this helps but I got it in my Ford Fiesta (2014 model). Just had to move the seats forward a bit.

      • Thanks for your reply, yeah it did fit in my falcon too…just setting it up and it's updating the software for last one hour…

  • It is $1089 at Costco, but the viewing angle is terrible if your lounge room is wide, so back it goes..

  • +1

For anyone that has purchased this TV or are thinking about it from JB or HN. The GG's have it for the same price, but using the eBay 20% coupon, C20TECH, similar to this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237725 (deal currently working, not suspended). It comes down to $876. Purchased mine on Friday from JB, went back in today and received $220 refund. Just had to show them the checkout page of eBay. Here's the link to the TV: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141724825718.

    • I just pulled the trigger on this too.. Insane value @ $876!!

    • Can i ask what store you bought it from?> I got one saturday morning and they are refusing to match it?? Did the give you a new receipt at the lower price?

      Cheers.

      • Hey mate,

Bought from JB Hi Fi Cockburn, WA. Yea they gave me a new receipt for the lower price of $876. Just tell them you want to return the TV, they will either accept it and then you can buy the one from the Good Guys or they'll price match.

        • Any chance you can upload a photo of the receipt?

        • Can do, won't be until about 5 this arvo when I get home.

        • That would be awesome.. I'd appreciate it a lot..

    • Thanks for this fellas.
Was about to purchase at JB for retail $1096.

By fluke came across this site while googling. Went to use code on ebay and buy for $877, at the last second i thought 'stuff it' ..bought the 60incher instead on Ebay for $1116 from GG (was basically $1400 before the code) - so i only spent $20 more than what i was originally already happy to spend. Im the type that regrets not getting 'the next size up'. for the extra $250 odd who rekons it i made the right choice? cheers.

  • Don't Worry about the Receipt.. JB HIFI Plenty Valley's manager was 2 busy to talk to me. The staff member i spoke to Refused to match. "We dont match Ebay even if its Good Guys". When i asked if JB was happy to lose me as a customer his response was "Not my problem". They will allow the return in the original condition unopened. When i asked if they would match if i had a copy of a JB receipt at that price again he refused with " Its more than likely a refurbished model, the receipt wont state as to why the customer got it at that price so we wont match it. Ill just suck up the $200 and not shop with JB Again.

    • No worries. Sorry I couldn't help you. To be honest I'd be taking the TV back, they will accept it. It sounds like you got a bad staff member, definitely need to talk to a manager. Have always had great experiences with JB so I wouldn't write them off completely. Sounds like your local store just needs a recalibration. For the record the receipt states that it's a:
