  • Just giving you guys a heads up to be a little weary of Duracell AA, AAA batteries. From my personal experience within the span of 5 years I have had 3 instances where batteries have popped (a loud ping sound) and leaked acid or whatever chemical it is all over my devices, and they were all Duracell batteries AA and AAA.
*First 2 of the 4 AAA's in my expensive Logitech harmony remote popped which I didn't find out until a week later (I had always wondered what that loud ping was) when the remote crashed. Eventually fixed it after cleaning it out, drying in the sun and doing a factory reset.
*Second AA's (must have popped when no one was around) in a TV remote solved by doing the above.
*Third right in front of me on my desk next to a picture frame, they weren't even connected to anything. I was just on my laptop and as soon as I heard the pop I looked at the batteries and sure enough one of them was rolling halfway down the table leaving a trail of acid. LOL.
After all of this I went around the house and replaced any Duracell battery I had.

It's not my intention to bag out this brand I am simply expressing my past experience. I'm sure other brands probably also share similar issues. A quick search on Duracell batteries leaking on Google yields a few similar stories (AA,AAA,9V, etc) so I am not alone.

To their credit they have a "no leakage" guarantee, and I've read stories where Duracell have made good and compensated people with free packs of batteries if they've had issues. I just couldn't be bothered ever making a claim.

For peace of mind bargain or not I decided not to use this brand anymore. If you ever heard a loud ping sound and not know where it came from I recommend checking anything using batteries.

    • Thats really random? Did you end up finding out what went wrong (via google and other peoples experience? ) Do you live anywhere out of the ordinary? haha really random

      • I live in Auburn Sydney West area about 20 mins from Sydney CBD. The first batch was actually the batteries that came in the remotes packaging from office works Sydney CBD. Not sure where the other 2 batch were from probably from supermarkets. I also remember that non of theme were nowhere near their expiry dates.

I read a post somewhere years ago when I was researching it, that was supposedly from a Duracell rep in America stating that it was a safety measure to relieve built up pressure to prevent the battery from exploding/igniting LOL. (It was a long time ago so can't really find the link)

I have found some recent forums that show that this is still a current problem though.

    • I wouldn't have thought to check the batteries. Thanks for that.

Bunnings Warehouse's sell 30 pack Energizer AA Alkaline batteries (3 packs of 10) for $20 which to me is better value than for Duracells. Still a cheap price for Duracell's non-the-less.

I'll take 32 Duracell's for $19 over your better value Energizer deal from Bunning's

      • By "better value" I am factoring performace and cost. If I was looking at just the "better unit price" the cheaper one is obvious. From my experience Energizer alkalines have served me better in my flash than Duracell. Each to their own.
