  • better than the same priced Akai @ DSE as this has wifi :)

    • The Soniq runs Android also, may be a plus to some.

Also, consumer rights and statutory warranty aside, Soniq offer a 3 year warranty with product registration.

      • As far as I understand this is not a smart tv, so no Android. I bought the 55' smart tv version and returned it within 2 days…it was slow as sh*t to boot and the android part was nothing special, very limited number of apps (back in those days when Netflix wasn't "available" in Oz).

        • I can't say for sure. It's listed as a smart TV, and there is an Android icon on the Soniq website. I figured its correct given the mention of the cpu in it.

I've seen a Soniq 48" smart, that was running Android (though old, 2.x). Agreed though, that one took ages to boot also.

      • According to the JB guy, android on Soniq TVs is very limited with limited apps and should not be considered a selling point.

He said to me that if you want a proper smart TV, go for another brand but if you could output from your PC or bought an Android box like the ASUS one then it's a great deal.

So yeah, it might technically be a smart TV, but just consider it as a non smart one and you'll be much better satisfied.

  • +10

The quality is way too poor on this TV, especially with 65 inch screen. Have seen that at my friend's place..

      SONIQ……. Nope

      • The full HD 42" Soniq TVs I bought almost 5 years ago (L42V11A) are still going strong though they aren't without their flaws. The picture quality is great but the guide has a bug that means you can't view anything but the current show, and when watching free to air the audio drops out for half a second perhaps once every half hour. This on all 3 copies me and my relatives own. Still for $400 and full HD almost 5 years ago that's pretty awesome. It's a shame to hear the quality has gone down so much.

  • +2

    UHD or bust at 65"

  • +1

Grabbed one today, been in the market for a new tv for awhile as the last one has been slowly dying.

It's alright, would prefer 4k but at this size you are looking at a lot more with nothing I actually view being 4k. Seems pretty standard feature wise, can't force it to switch to 100hz, incredibly basic menu, build quality could be better (stand screw hole was off centre)

    • BTW, firmware updates can be found here.
Looks like there was one last month, so good chance what's on the TV is older.
Not sure if can update this one OTA also.

Had a poke through the update file too, I see it's running Android 4.4.4

      • thanks for the link to the firmware, do I still need it if the first time i connected it to the internet it updated? It's running 4.4.4 right now

        • Wouldn't think so, the OTA should hopefully be the same.

    • Can it Netflix/Preston/Stan/install apps from the Play store?

      • as far as i can see, no It just comes with pre-installed apps and some store you can purchase things from. I can take a closer look but everything has their own front-end so can't access android system at all.

        • Bummer. No Netlifx/Preso/Stan in their built in apps?

        • @tantryl:
I don't think so. It was one of the features I was hoping was on there, I'll see if I can find out anything more later.
it has a dlna capable player built in so that somewhat suits me.

        • @ptfff: If it's got a reliable DLNA that's pretty handy. Real pity about the streaming apps though, those services are only going to get more useful/essential.

        • @tantryl: it does allow you access to the play store but it defaults to their custom store that has 22 apps, nothing really fancy just standard social media apps, and some media players.

I tried to install both the presto and netflix app and it just says it's not compatible. I could try to find/install a compatible version but doubt it'll be that easy.

        • @ptfff: Dang. Still a good deal, just not for me.

    • How is the picture quality.

      Color reproduction
      Viewing angles
      Sharpness of text
      Noise
      Blacks etc

I already have a nexus TV so don't really care about the smart features much, however picture quality I do care about :)

Any idea how is the input lag on this thing for gaming

      • The picture quality is ok, I don't think it's anything special. I can't find any faults right now, but lower resolution stuff will look terrible.

I'm not really the main user of the TV so haven't seen it a whole lot. Color repro seems decent enough, comparing it to my computer screen and it I found no major differences. Sharpness of text was fine with their menus and the smart tv functions, I could read it from fairly far back. Noise is kind of a problem, but the noise reduction inbuilt helps. Blacks, not great, even have some backlight bleed around the bezel.

I can try out hooking my computer later, I would like to see it run at 100hz but can't say regarding input lag.

I would say it's acceptable, nothing special, a few negatives but it's a decent price.

        • Can you manually dim the backlight?

        • Thanks for your reply… Might just go and try this out at JB today 😃

  • Ooohh ooohhh, I wanna touch the sky, I wanna fly so high.
Ooohh Ooohhhhh, I wanna hold you, I wanna love you tonight

  • Prefer to wait until sony kdl65 to drop to $1500 like when it did post boxing day.
