Is Netflix Worth It in Australia?

Hello Folks,

Just bought Chomecast 2 from the deal (HN). I usually use Youtube as I find many interesting things there, but was thinking about getting NETFLIX. One of my friends had a free trial, and he said there aren't many movies on Netflix and also it hardly gets new movies (like Deadpool for now). So is it worth getting it?

Also, would love to here if there are any alternate available, which can work better.

Thanks,
TD

It really depends on what you like to watch. I haven't bothered paying for it beyond a free trial because there really wasn't anything on there that interested me (that I hadn't already seen elsewhere).

I'm not into the latest US blockbuster drama/crime/scifi shows, I prefer to watch things that are interesting like documentaries, cooking shows, nature etc.

Each to their own I guess.

    • +3

Heaps of Docos on Netflix… (well on the overseas versions anyway)

      • +2

Sure there are plenty, but there's nothing exactly new and exciting that I've seen. Most of the stuff is pretty old that I've already watched from other sources many years ago.

  • +17

netflix is way better than free to air TV

    • +8

But youtube is way better than netflix for entertainment purposes and the former is free vs paid.

      • Why was he negged?…That's true.

        • +4

Being truthful doesn't mean up votes. A lot of people can't handle it

  • +10

Personally after using 6 months of service, I found it is not worth paying. Most of the movies are old; may be 10% from 2014-15 rest before 2014. I do not watch drama/serials. Interestingly most of the movies that I watched on Netflix were broadcasted on free to air channels in a week or two.
Another drawback was Sony TV Netflix app - the search function was crap and no way to categorise movies based on year, actor or ratings. I hate Netflix categorising movies based on what I have watched.
It is similar with Stan and Presto.

    • +4

Chromecast at least solves the crappy SmartTV app problem.

    • +2

I also find it hard to find shows on Netflix using their interface. If you're looking for a way to search what's on Netflix Australia based on year, rating (including rotten tomatoes ratings), categories, etc you could try my site: whatsonnetflixaustralia.com

      @akd thanks.

    Netflix is not a bargain.

    • +5

Once you've seen US Netflix, Aussie Netflix is not a bargain.

      Fixed.

  • +15

Don't get it unless you are willing to also get a VPN/DNS redirection service so you can get more than the Australian catalog. Also don't expect the latest movies and tv shows to be there (unless they are produced by Netflix). For latest TV shows, you will need Hulu Plus/HBO Now which again costs a subscription and requires VPN/DNS redirect. For latest movies, you will need to pay/movie and go through Showtime or something similar. And people wonder why we torrent…

  • +5

Only worth it if you also buy a DNS Unblocker so you can access the libraries around the world…
Not great for Movies.. more for TV series.
    Movies are just a bonus.

    • +1

I don't watch any TV series, would love if there is something for movies just like Netflix. I know I can watch movies online but I hate those ads, buffering, sites and media player +my net is shitty. And so I was looking at Netflix like (Youtube for movies).

But decided not to get it.

  • +1

The people who don't recommend Netflix, are you using a VPN or equivalent to access the US content?

    • +1

      Not just US content..
We actually spend more time outside the US than in it.. depends on your preferences of course.

    • +1

No, I have not used VPN. It might be good but don't know how to set on TV and don't want to mess with PC settings.

      • +2

Use DNS unblocking, not a VPN..
Change the DNS in the TV or in your modem.. and you're set.
        Will not affect anything else.

    • +3

I watch Netflix every day, registered 3 or so years ago in US site and have been using dns service since day 1. Mainly I watch US catalogue but if I cannot find something I browse European catalogues.

I love tv shows more than movies so I don't mind not getting the greatest and the latest movies from Netflix. I go to movies or find another way :)

    • +7

For those using Netflix on windows PC don't forget this free solution
      https://www.smartflix.io/
Works like DNS and gives you access to all the world catalogues
      Works great on my HTPC

  • +4

I'm in the same boat re: VPN and DNS solutions..

But why not give it a free trial and decide for yourself? First month is free as standard. Each person will have different tastes and preferences, so you might find it worthwhile, while others may not.

There's more than just movies - ie. You mentioned Deadpool, so if you're a Marvel fan, Jessica Jones and Daredevil were produced by netflix.

You can also do a free trial of Getflix which will let to access other regions for 14 days - although it's a little more difficult to do that with a chromecast (but not impossible).

Alternatively you could take a look at Stan. Also first month free, or there are 3 month free trials with Optus atm.

    • +1

So basically I don't like TV series and all I wish is movies (as easy as Youtube videos).

      • +2

Yes and every person has different tastes in movies. My comment still stands. It's a free trial, you have nothing to lose.

Im not aware of any subscription service that has only movies, and even then, studios and distributors will release some movies exclusively to certain services. So you will miss out on certain movies, or need to subscribe to multiple services.

        Good luck.

      • +1

Presto has a movies only option (9.99 pm), movies are updated a bit more regular than netflix, but they are not the latest either…

  • -1

i must be old fashioned i still torrent programs i'd like to watch.

not sure why people want to pay extra to watch tv shows when you can just download them.

    • +2

Me too, however there are some shows that you can not download as they are not very popular.
Several shows the wife wanted to watch, couldn't find as no torrents/seeders available.
      These were on Netflix.

    • +6

not sure why people want to pay extra to watch tv shows when you can just download them.

I don't want to pay 'extra', but I do because it's legal. Torrenting is not.

      • +1

I don't want to pay 'extra', but I do because it's legal. Torrenting is not.

Also worth bearing in mind that a lot of folks are still using geo-unblocking workarounds to access more content…which is still a bit of a legal grey area IIRC.

        • +2

I agree, but I think being in a grey area is better than blatantly illegal :)

        • +1

@Evil-Elmo: Possibly, but it's worth noting that I have an old schoolmate currently in gaol for taking the same attitude towards tax law…despite whatever cognitive distortions or justifications you have, as soon as you get caught, Murphy's Law means that grey gets rounded up to black rather promptly in the legal system! ;)

        • +1

          @StewBalls:

          "VPN" :-)

      • +1

It's illegal to download copyright materials only, but the old "not very popular" shows are usually free.

        • +4

          Got any examples?

Unless you're talking about stuff that is ridiculously old and out of copyright, then chances are it's still illegal, just unlikely that someone would actually enforce their copyright.

      • +2

It is also going to be legal to cut your medicare benefits, weekend penalty rates, quality education for your children, public transport quality etc. Legality is different to morality.

    • +10

Because Netflix is so much easier.

Yes, piracy isn't exactly hard, but not nearly as easy as sitting down at the TV, picking something and having it play immediately.

I'm also of the belief that good entertainment is worth paying for, and if there's a reasonable avenue to pay at a fare price, then I'll do it.

      • +6

absolutely this, piracy is a supply issue as has been proven many times. Give the people the product in an easily accessible way at a fair price and people will pay for the content.

        • +1

What if piracy was as easy as paying for netflix ? Would you still pay for it ?

        • +3

Piracy is just as easy as netflix and i do pay for netflix

Other distribution platforms are locked down and not user friendly, which is what causes the supply issue

Look at mp3, with itunes, spotify and other legal fairly priced alternatives music piracy has dropped heaps

Steam with sales (fair prices) etc.. - game piracy dropped heaps

By keeping archaic distribution models, meaning exclusive deals with one provider to jack up prices causes piracy. Again people will pay if given a reasonably priced legal method of acquiring content

netflix via brazilian currency is around $7.50 AUD for HD streams. the alternate free option is to setup sickbeard/sonarr and sabnzbd/torrent equivalent to download shows.

    • +1

Why not just share with 3 mates for $3.75 a month?

      • +1

have they stopped people from account sharing? if not that's good.

        • +1

as long as each of you only use less than the 5 devices limit why would they?

        • +1
  • +1

Is there anything like Youtube/Netflix where I can get all the movies (new-old) to watch? (don't mind paying/month)

    • +3

      Presto?

    • +2

Agree with scubacoles. Try the free 6m presto subscription. That will give you an idea of whether you would want a similar service (Netflix is easier to use than Presto, although I think the AU content on netflix is not as good as Presto's)

  • +4

No it's not worth. All of there rubbish content for which the rights are free are available in Australia.

  • +1

Definitely needs more of the US content. So without a decent VPN Geoblocker whatever you need it makes it tricky.

I just signed up with my parents. Get 2 screens for $12 so we pay $6 each a month. This suits us as we are only likely to use one screen each at a time. But you can buy up to 4 screens and pay $7.50 each or $5 each for 3 households.

I watched Making a Murderer which was fantastic, will be watching Fuller House and have also watched a few movies etc.

I figure if I can watch a few things per month the $6 is easily justified and at least I'm paying for the content I watch which I wasn't before.

  • +5

If only we had HBO Go in Australia!

    • +1

You can get it with a DNS adjusting service like Getflix.

  • +1

    Not worth it imo.

I had the free trial and didn't even bother to renew with another free promo.

  • +1

I think it's worth it for my parents and little siblings. It's easy to use, no complaints and no fuss.

I still personally torrent stuff I want since Netflix doesn't have everything I want and often streams at subpar quality.

  • +1

I pay for both Netflix and Stan. Cheaper than pay TV and plenty for the family to watch. There is a lot of older stuff on them that we are watching through. If you want latest and greatest it is probably going to be lacking. But if you are like us and haven't watched much previously its great for watching all the stuff that was on TV but you didn't watch because the TV networks f***d around with time slots and putting them out of order and jammed them full of shit ads.

  • +1

Netflix, Stand and Presto in my opinion are extremely poor in the content available to watch. Most things are old and outdated. I have all 3 ( free 3 and 6 months trials) and I struggle to find anything great to watch. $10 a month is hardly money you are going to miss so trial it first.

When these streaming services where released in Australia I was expecting blockbuster recent movies and shows that had just been aired in the US. If this is your expectation you will sorely disappointed.

    • +1

You'll find occasionally that there are some really great old series that shouldn't be overlooked. For instance on presto- there's 6 Feet Under, Sopranos. Noone can really dispute the quality of those shows.

Dig a little into the recommended shows of last decade and you'll have plenty to watch =)

  • +3

Only if you have a vpn or smart DNS to fool the geo blocking and access the use Netflix

  • +2

If your a soccer fan then nope, Optus own the rights to EPL next season.. fetchtv is a better investment.

  • +1

I'm considering cancelling soon. It's basically just for the kids now as my movie collection puts Netflix to shame.

  • Invest in best internet possible, and learn a foreign language ( like Chinese) then your digital entertainment needs sorted…….

  • +2

While you're exploring your new Chromecast 2, don't forget all the chromecast games. Connect 4 Quads is simple but surprisingly addictive, and drawing pictures on your telly in games like pictocast is a great fun for when friends drop by (up to 8 players). Everyone whips out their phone and off you go!
It's probably time to sell my Wii.

  • +1

Get Netflix and get a proxy DNS service so you can access other regions content.

I wouldn't bother with Aus Netflix but the US version is fantastic.

  • +1

I don't think it's worth it if you're the only person using it, but if you share an account with somebody else and split the costs it's not bad at all. Plus, each person has their own 'profile' sort of thing so when you open up Netflix it will ask which one of you are watching. Not sure how many people you're able to share it with, but right now I'm using an account with two other people and it's working splendidly.

  • +1

Not really the offereed movies are ones 99% of which have already been shown on the TV or you'd have watched yourself. New titles are paid. We tried the trial period and then closed it.

  • Not worrh it. It's rubbish. Mostly old stuff you would have already seen. Free to Air TV has much better shows. YouTube has much more to watch at no cost as well.

  • +3

Take the month free trial, download SMARTFLIX (unlocks all regions for free) and see how you like it. You've got nothing to lose (except hours and hours and hours of your time)

    • +1

Smartflix is all well and good but you can't combine it with chromecast. If you could would be happy to pay money for it…

      • +2

it's in BETA at the moment, so it'll come with chromecasting options in the future.

  • +4

You're a moron if you think that Netflix will get Deadpool while it's still at the cinemas.

  • +2

imo Netflix is great if you use a program like Smartflix.

  • +1

Short answer is no. Because unless you VPN and go for US not enough titles to watch

  • +1

I use it mainly for the kids. Even then its moderately hard to justify.

  • +1

I got bored of Netflix before the trial ended, but my so is hooked on to it. I personally prefer SBS OnDemand. What I want is not available on any place other than torrents.

  • +2

What! Netflix is awesome! How much tv do you watch!? There is plenty on there. There isn't everything because Netflix doesn't own every show and movie. We used to have the movies pack on Foxtel and it was more expensive than Netflix - Netflix has shit load more content than Foxtel movies pack. and we were never interested in the movies on Foxtel. For $14 bucks a month it's worth it

  • +2

we can all agree here that anyone with a decent internet connection and $12 to spare per month should get netflix. unless you're an old baby boomer who doesn't know anyone who can help them set this up, there's really no excuse to stick with free to air TV - look at how long ads run for, so much time is wasted on that crap.

if not netflix, then use youtube as the 'free' version.

  • +1

I think Netflix is great. There are dozens of hours of great shows (don't forget about all the older shows that are on there, which are less easy to find but great to binge on) and a handful of excellent originals, some great standup specials, documentaries, etc. If you think ~$10 a month for all that is too much, I would love to find out what entertainment you're paying for that's cheaper. (And don't forget you can cancel your subscription at any time easily; I cancel it whenever I have a few months where I won't have time to watch TV)

  • +3

$15 between 3 people is $5 a month. at $5 netflix goes above and beyond its worth, great service

  • +2

I dont get it, why dont you just get the free trial and see for yourself?

  • +1

well the lawyers say it's ok to use VPN's

    http://www.afr.com/technology/online-pirates-may-use-escape-…

  • +2

Sadly downloading/streaming illegally is still the only way to get the most, especially RECENT content, thanks to copyright laws.
I had a look at what Netflix AU, Stan, and Presto have got to offer, and they're all pretty pathetic really…
I currently watch The Flash, Limitless, Supergirl, Legands of tomorrow, How to get away with murder, Second chance, Superstore, and just finished The expanse and The man in the high castle. If there's a service that has all these then I'd be happy, but sadly I can only stream them from my sources.

      • +1

IMHO, the Trade Minister needs more work to do

        This.

  • +2

Netflix is value for the original content alone.
What is the competition? Foxtel way too expensive (unless you are desperate for sport), free-to-air is mostly crap. iView is OK, but poor picture quality. Stan & Presto are poor imitations. Youtube is hit-or-miss and advert-infected.
Torrents and usenet are the real competition, but most people are happy to pay $10/month for quality programming.

  • it is still far cheaper and ethical to pirate media content

    • +2

How can it be ethical to pirate content?

      I'm not following?

      • +1

Ethics and morals are subjective. While I don't completely agree with the saying of pirating media is ethical, I don't find it unethical.

  • +1

Oh yes most definitely worth it. I mean who doesn't want to watch Thomas and Friends Blue Mountain Mystery everyday for the last 2 months. master of the house is 3.5 and loves Netflix…
