  • These new, pointless import fee deposits make me nervous. I'm still waiting on an $86 deposit to be refunded from six weeks ago. I don't trust the couriers to be honest about what fees were incurred. I'm assuming it would be the couriers that would declare this to Amazon?

Not keen to chase these deposits every time I buy something.

    • As a follow up, I requested the import records and found that the value of my item came to over $1000, due to a seemingly arbitrary exchange rate being used, so a whole raft of fees ensued. In total, $250. The item only valued at $1065 (after excessive exchange rate applied).

I guess Amazon actually saved me some cash, weirdly enough.

      • Get a 28Degrees Mastercard, no international transaction fees and their exchange rates always seem reasonable. No annual fee either.

        • This is import duties, supposedly incurred in passing the item through customs. Amazon is now collecting a deposit for all items exported to Australia. They keep this deposit, sort of in trust, and use it to pay for any import fees. The courier then appears to collect any fees incurred from Amazon.

If there are no fees you'll supposedly get the deposit refunded. I just expect couriers to abuse roots somehow, but this is perhaps just because I've been bs'd in this scenario before.

(And thanks, but I did use 28 degrees)

Sorry,I could have been clearer in the original comment.

        • I bought a $150.00 item from Amazon yesterday and there was no deposit, so I think it must be to do with you buying something over $1000.00.

        • @28Degrees: not sure. Here's what it shows me for a 60 USD backpack:

"$63.24 Free Shipping for Prime Members & Free Returns.
$16.97 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia"

          And a tape dispenser:

          "$3.88
$7.53 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia"

In fact, I can't find an item that does not have this note.

If you don't mind, what did you buy? Dragon dildo? :)

        • I bought a watch, here is the breakdown -

          Item(s) Subtotal:
          $98.40
          Shipping & Handling:
          $7.68
          Total before tax:
          $106.08
          Estimated tax to be collected:
          $0.00
          Grand Total:
          $106.08

        • @28Degrees: thanks. Very strange. Watches give me that notice as well.

Might try a new account and see.

I can try it if you want with my account, PM me a link to what you bought and I will add it to my cart and report back with a breakdown of the costs.

        • @28Degrees: thanks, but I think I see: while it warns me of an import deposit on every item, it only applies it in cart if the order is over $1000 aud, using their crappy exchange rate.

          Thanks for your help.
